Fresh flowering tops, organically grown in the US, shipped in cold packs within 24 hours of picking. Dried on screens for 48 hours to drive off water (that’s what prevents mold in the oil). Then the glass vessels get stuffed full, topped with olive oil, and set in the sun — the heat infusion releases the hyperforin and hypericin, and the oil turns that signature red.

Hugh Turcotte, L.Ac., maker of Red Emperor’s Immortal Flame, sources it from domestic organic farmers who harvest in the last week of June, when the actives concentrate in the flowering tops (traditionally the week of the Feast of St. John the Baptist — hence the name). Cold-packed the same day, screen-dried 48 hours, packed in glass with organic olive oil, and sun-infused for two weeks.

Medieval folk used the plant to ward off evil spirits. Immortal Flame uses it on joints and soft tissue. But if an evil spirit finds its way into your knee — it doesn’t stand a chance.
