Empowering parents to support their teens through anxiety & mental health 💪🏼

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
There’s a lot of new faces so allow me to introduce myself.

Some know me through Dr. Chinwé and I’s books SEEN and Beyond the Spiral. Some have heard me speak at a school, conference, or church. And some of you have been here long enough to remember when this was basically just my personal Instagram. 😂

These days, my life includes writing, speaking, consulting, building a marketing agency, leading a nonprofit, ministry, and being a husband and dad.

They can look like very different worlds.

But the older I get, the more I realize there’s a thread connecting almost everything I care about:

People need to feel seen.

So I’m going to be sharing more of all of it here: mental health, faith, leadership, business, and probably a little of the mess in between.

If you’ve been here awhile, thanks for sticking around.

And if you’re new here, welcome. If there’s one thing I want you to remember is that no matter what today looks like for you, there is always hope.

What you face does not define who you are. Your challenges may be part of your story, but they are not your identity. You are uniquely created by God, and there is so much more to who you are. by @willhutch

Jesus is the source of all healing. Sometimes healing happens in a moment, and sometimes it happens through a process, but every good and perfect gift comes from God.

Okay… THIS was a moment! 🙌🏽🎤✨
Look at Queen Latifah’s face! 🤩

I had the joy of meeting 14-year-old Brooklyn Marie and her dad last weekend in Alexandria, MN with @willhutch

…AND then getting to watch this moment from The Voice was awesome!

Brooklyn stepped onto that stage, started singing, and two coaches turned their chairs immediately. And Queen Latifah’s reaction?! 👀🔥

At just 14 years old, Brooklyn is already courageously using the gift God has given her.

And as someone who loves encouraging young people to recognize their strengths, build confidence, and use their voices, this was so inspiring. ❤️

Brooklyn, keep singing. Keep showing up boldly. Your voice matters, and clearly, people are listening! 🎶✨

Go Brooklyn!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I heard this quote from @jonacuff several years ago and it’s always stuck with me.

Lately, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes healthy organizations.

And I keep coming back to this:

Healthy leaders don’t have to agree with every question, challenge, or critique. But they create environments where questions can be asked.

The danger starts when disagreement is interpreted as disloyalty.

When questions are treated as disrespect.

When the people closest to a leader learn it’s easier to stay quiet than to tell the truth.

Because eventually, a leader who only hears agreement loses the ability to distinguish between “everyone agrees with me” and “everyone is afraid to disagree with me.”

Accountability isn’t an obstacle to good leadership.

It’s one of the things that keeps good leaders good.

And it is vital in creating organizational cultures where people feel seen. by @willhutch

I’ve led teams, built leadership development programs, consulted with business and nonprofit leaders, and I’m a parent.

And one of my greatest strengths can also become one of my greatest weaknesses:

I believe in people.

I love seeing potential in someone before they can see it themselves. I genuinely believe every person has value, worth, and something meaningful to offer the world.

But I’ve also sat across the table from people whose patterns were destroying their relationships, businesses, finances, or futures.

And when you care about someone, you want to fix it.

You see where the road leads. You want to grab the wheel. You explain it differently. Give another chance. Have another conversation. Offer another resource.

Sometimes you start doing more work for their growth than they’re doing themselves.

That’s where helping can quietly become rescuing.

I can listen.
I can empathize.
I can advise.
I can warn.
I can resource.
I can believe in them.

But I cannot change them.

At some point, loving people well means allowing them to own their choices and the consequences of those choices.

I’m learning that I can deeply believe in someone without becoming responsible for who they choose to become.

You cannot want someone to change more than they want it for themselves. by @willhutch

Maybe we’re asking the wrong question.

Is social media causing the teen mental health crisis? Or is it academic pressure, over-parenting, and the loss of free play?

I think the research gives us an answer:

Both.

Peter Gray makes an important argument that childhood has fundamentally changed. Kids have less independence, less free play, and more pressure to perform.

But I think he goes too far when he dismisses our concern over social media as an overreaction.

Because this isn’t just a United States problem. Research across the globe continues to find connections between how kids engage with social media and their mental health.

Maybe we don’t need to pick a side.

We can give kids more freedom AND put healthier boundaries around technology.

We can reduce performance pressure AND pay attention to what happens online.

Our kids don’t need us to win the argument about what caused the mental health crisis.

They need us to help lead them to experience a healthier childhood.

I’ve never met someone who said, “I want to work for a robot.”

You can’t lead humans well without being human yourself.

Vulnerability isn’t weakness in leadership. It builds trust, connection, and gives the people you lead permission to be human too.

You don’t have to have it all together to lead well. You just have to be willing to be real.
