William Cobbing: Inner Horizon | On view through Jan 3, 2026 at UMOCA

Commissioned by the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, London-based artist William Cobbing’s first U.S. solo show turns Utah’s deserts into a quiet, hypnotic journey. Wearing mirrored and cave-like clay headpieces, he captures the land in single-take videos, letting viewers see—and feel—the textures, colors, and forms of the terrain as if they’re part of it.

Hints of Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson appear, but the focus stays on the conversation between body and landscape.

For the layout of the book, Fraser Muggeridge referenced Guy Schraenen’s Kunst-enaars-publikaties, in which the main catalogue is sandwiched between two sets of newsprint papers.
For mine, sandwiching the main catalogue are 100s of working studio drawings, never previously shown.

The book focuses on my Social Substance exhibition, and more broadly about the materiality of clay.
Such a joy to commission new texts by the brilliant Jennifer Lucy Allan, Petra Lange-Berndt, Darren Pih, Francis Ponge’s ‘Unfinished Ode to Mud’ and a conversation with Clare Twomey.

Excited to be in Icheon, South Korea, where I’ll be exhibiting a series of clay video sculptures, and performing in the the 13th Gyeonggi Ceramics Biennale, ‘Earth Makes’ opening 18 September until 1 November.

‘Earth Makes’ asks what changes when ceramics is understood not as the result of human authorship alone, but as something co-produced by clay, land, fire, climate, labor, technology, and time. Directed by Daehyung Lee, the Biennale brings together 28 teams (67 artists) from 14 countries, with the main exhibition at the Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art in Icheon and programs across Gwangju, Yeoju, and Gyeonggi Province.

The main exhibition unfolds through three chapters. Made from Earth begins with matter itself, approaching clay as an active material whose behavior—drying, cracking, shrinking, firing, collapsing, and hardening—helps produce form. William Cobbing’s work brings clay into encounter with the body, while Chang-Ho Kim draws on the breathing material intelligence of Korean ‘onggi’.

We’re very excited for ‘Video Craft’ exhibition curated by Sarah Mills, PhD, and Ariel Zaccheo, MCD Curatorial Director.
‘Video Craft’ explores the formal and technical properties that video, film, and early moving image technologies share with more traditional craft media like ceramics, textiles, and glass.
This exhibition brings together artists at different stages of their careers, from early pioneers of video production to emerging digital natives.
