Scattered Threads

For Your GRAMMY® Consideration

Best Classical Instrumental Solo
Best Engineered Album, Classical

The story of Scattered Threads began many years ago when I was a teenager and Woody Shaw was my combo leader at a jazz camp. About 35 years later, Joan Jeanrenaud recommended that I work with pianist Katrina Krimsky on performing my piano series Quiet Rhythms. To my surprise, I learned that Katrina and Woody had dated in the ’70s and that he had named Katrina Ballerina after her.

That was just one of the many connections in Katrina’s vibrant musical life. She was close friends with Terry Riley at SUNY Buffalo and appeared on the first recording of In C, when she was married to Jon Hassell and known as Margaret Hassell. Earlier she worked with Stockhausen performing his Klavierstücke.

For many years after our first encounter, she would tell me from time to time about her grandnephew Dylan Hamme and his exceptional abilities as a violinist. She eventually introduced us, and - carpe diem! - he is now featured on Scattered Threads.

Released on Belarca Records, the album marks violinist Dylan Hamme’s debut, with pianist Nicole Brancato performing my music.

It has been a joy to hear their musical voices in these works, including the premiere recording of Duo Montuño, alongside Aria, Seven Scenes for Four Violins, Motions of Return, and Scatter My Ashes.

Longtime collaborators John Kilgore and Alan Silverman beautifully recorded and mastered the album. Vanessa Ague contributed the superb liner notes and Valeria Di Mateo created the stunning album design.

The album is dedicated in memory of Katrina Krimsky (1938-2025) taken in Power Station at Berklee NYC by @william.susman

I’ve experienced several wonderful opera performances in San Francisco, but hearing Hans Werner Henze’s 1971 The Tedious Way to Natasha Ungeheuer’s Apartment (Der langwierige Weg in die Wohnung der Natascha Ungeheuer) this weekend was a truly rare and extraordinary experience on every level. For me, it was a singular event.

Produced by bassist Richard Worn and performed by the Worn Ensemble under the direction of Steven Schick, the work received a stunning performance from baritone soloist Haleigh Adams and the entire ensemble. by @william.susman
