Book Synopsis:
Met detective Eden Driscoll never wanted a child, but when his estranged sister vanishes from her sailboat, he is asked to come to Devon and look after her son Finn, a nephew he’d never met and hadn’t even known existed.

Slowly settling into the seaside town of Teignmouth, Eden adjusts to his newfound parenthood, then Finn disappears from school and Eden knows something is dreadfully wrong.

When Eden’s sister’s body is finally found floating in the sea local police rule her death an accident, but Eden isn’t convinced. She was an experienced sailor and would never sail without a life jacket. Eden starts searching his sister’s life for answers and what he discovers changes everything.

My Review:
There is nothing I enjoy more than not only discovering a great new author but the start of a fantastic new series and both of those fit here. You really feel for both Eden and Finn as they are literally thrown together by tragic circumstances. Eden has never parented before and Finn has never had a father figure, so they both have to learn day by day. Finn is obviously angry at the world after his mother was snatched away so suddenly which makes Eden’s job that much harder. I don’t want to say too much more and give anything away except this is a great read that has you fully invested from page one. There is a great twist at the end and even though it’s a crime thriller full of suspense, lies, secrets and tension it’s not too dark or gory.

I can’t wait to get a copy of The Burning Tide which is book two in the series to see what happens next.

So very shocked to hear the news this morning that the great Peter May has died. This is really sad. His Lewis Man trilogy really revolutionised what crime fiction could do and he was one of a handful writers who really opened up the genre. We shared an editor in Jon Riley and Peter was always a really generous friend to me. My thoughts are with Janice – also a great woman and supporter of crime fiction. by @william1shaw

Congratulations to the very lovely @sheilabuglerauthor whose latest nail-biter The Stepmother is out today. It's the thrilling-set psychological thriller you'll read this year. I'm doing a launch event for the book at @waterstoneshastings on Oct 1. (See link in bio for details.) Three years ago she did me the honour of helping me launch The Wild Swimmers at The Mermaid Inn at Rye, which was a smashing event. We even had the mayor at it. by @william1shaw

Yesterday I went to the celebration of the life of my friend Adrian Driscoll, the man who Eden is named after. It was such a great gathering to commemorate a beautiful man's life - an incredible, creative, wise friend. One thing I did with him was that in 2007-8 (until I had to give it up to take up something that earned money!) we ran a non-fiction imprint called UnMadeUp. This was the best title. It was based on an event I did originally in 2004 or 2005 which was then taken over and improved by Susanna Jones and Alison Macleod. Adrian conceived the book, getting @zeegen to commission brilliant illustrations from some of the best illustrators around and getting @hamish_makgill to design it. It made no money at all, but that was not the point. Together we made a beautiful thing. He did so much amazing stuff and there was a room full of people missing him yesterday. So much love to Polly and the amazing kids. by @william1shaw

Thrilled beyond measure that our local town Killorglin has a new bookshop at the Puck Store, Fairfield. Congratulations to Carmel. Killorglin needs a bookshop! And the stock is great, obviously. Give it a visit. Buy all the books.

Bute Noir is gorgeous. Had a lovely event with GR Halliday and GD Wright effervescently chaired by Nicola Meighan. Had to leave way before I wanted to because need to get back to Ireland so we can put the final touches to @kvisual.ie which is going to be AMAZING. Thanks so much to Craig Robertson for inviting me and thanks to Remi Kone for intense conversations. Great to hang with so many clever people.
