There is animism or biomimicry found within these characters. The Towers are a complete work. In turn, though each tower can be individually appreciated and experienced, it is in the relationship between them that establishes a powerful and original work of both art and architecture.

While the towers are utilitarian structures in the tradition of watchtowers and surveillance architecture, their presence serves additional functions. They are activators of public space—in this case of the beach. They are anthropomorphic and provide the shoreline with a unique formation of characters that are an expression of the identity and culture of the region.

Like many of Miami’s resorts from the 1950’s, where free forms and Art Deco/Pop inspired colors reigned, our Lifeguard Towers are not standard. The designs reference 5 smaller lifeguard towers that William Lane designed in the mid-1990s, one of which, the rounded one, was designed in collaboration with artist Kenny Scharf.

Thank you @wallpapermag for the great story on our project in Miami Beach.
Six original silhouettes and six color palettes come together to create 36 towers that stretch the seven-mile coast line of Miami Beach. Through the complex strata of their forms – biomorphic, techno-fluid, phosphorescent, and retro-future – the Miami Beach lifeguard towers create a layered and lyrical set of cultural artifacts that are specific to a place, yet universal in meaning.

They are a reinvention of the five smaller lifeguard stands our studio designed in 1995 that were located along Ocean Drive in South Beach, of which the iconic round pink stand was designed with artist @kennyscharf
