I remember the first time I walked into the zouk room at a bachata congress.
I stopped and stared.
People were moving in the strangest shapes to music that was shaking my heart.
And I instantly promised myself I wouldn’t learn it.

There was no “basic.”
Too complicated.
Too much connection.
Too sensual for me.

But that night I came back.
Then the next day.
And the next.

They were so good at being still.
So good at connection.
So fluid in their bodies.
So cozy in the hug.

It was flow in motion.

With the commitment of not learning still fresh in my mind, I took my first class.
Then my first social.
Then my first private lesson.

And it clicked.
I liked this dance.
It felt good.

Soon after, I started looking up zouk videos on YouTube—just trying to see what moves I could learn.

That’s when I came across a video of Kuna and Brenda dancing at Uaizouk in Brazil.

What an experience.
The lights. The song choice. The presence. The complexity.

I fell in love with both of them and that dance in that moment.
I can’t tell you how many times I watched that video.
But I’m pretty sure I had the whole thing memorized.
And YouTube definitely started recommending me some weird things after that. 😂

Then I stumbled across Spirit Bird.

I watched the first minute and turned it off.
I did that three times.

But people kept sending it to me saying, “You have to watch the whole thing.”

So I did.
I still remember where I was sitting in my house.
I remember my mouth hanging open halfway through.
I was shocked.

How was this possible??
It was like nothing I’d ever seen.

I wanted to do that.

Fast forward to a private lesson I took with @brendacarvalhodancer , where I got to experience how she moves for the first time.
To dancing with Anderson, and feeling what it was like to be led through so much relaxation.

I was hooked all over again.
Hooked on finding that in my dance.

On finding flow.
On seeking a level of comfort and sensation I didn’t know was possible in a dance.

This story wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging Camilla who more times than I could count told me: “You could do that through more relaxation.” 🫠 My inspiration

Zouk is so much more than just a dance.

It holds a mirror to our mind, emotions, and heart. It shows us who we are so we can decide what to do about it.

It’s not easy,
But it is worth it.

This is why I teach ❤️
And there is still so much more to learn! How exciting 🥹

And then there was this group…

This group was super special! We had so much fun, and it was so beautiful to work with them and see, for many of them, their very first steps and enjoyment in Brazilian Zouk ❤️✨

Their warmth brought us so much excitement!! Even though we were incredibly tired 🤣 We’ve been teaching sooooo much these past few weeks (our own trainings, creating new concepts for our classes, structuring classes, promotion, private lessons, travelling… etc. etc)!

You guys, you warm my heart! Thank you so much for your trust 🤩 I hope to see you all again soon in our Zouk community!

“I don’t even need it to look beautiful per se!”

That’s what I told William beforehand.

I remember putting a lot of pressure on myself when we danced our demos in Charlottesville last July. The effect was that I created way more tension in my body than necessary, which ended up impacting our connection. I remember feeling a little disappointed, and William and I had such an interesting conversation afterwards about the balance between “performing” and showing “realness and playfulness.”

I always love the mix of these two, but I think there are moments when I focus more on the performance part.

That conversation planted some seeds in me, and over the last few weeks I’ve been reflecting on how I want to feel in the dance, and also on how I want to dance my demos.

This weekend in Utrecht, we taught for two full days about finding more effortlessness in the dance. I’m so happy with everything we created and brought to the group: the power of posture (Brenda & Anderson), the flow and creativity of travelling turns, improving connection and subtle movements in close embrace, and finally, exploring subtle and more relaxed headmovements in close embrace (both travelling and on the spot).

Dancing this demo without needing it to be a certain way, felt so open. We were a little nervous at the start, although I’m not even sure exactly why 🤣

In a way, letting the realness of the moment simply be makes me feel more “naked.” There are fewer filters, more authentic expression, and more space for emotions. I truly love how all of this is opening different kinds of doors.

I will always be someone who loves performing as well, and I also still enjoy observing how things look aesthetically (and really going into the details). It’s not about turning away from that at all! It’s more about exploring the other part too.

This year's birthday @praguezoukmarathon was extra special to me. I had the chance to dance again with one of my favorite social dancers & teachers @williamwegert ☺️🫂 Thank you, William, for taking the time to celebrate with me in our favorite language 💃🏼🕺🏼🫠🎉🎈. You and many other beautiful souls made my day unforgettable 🙏🏼✨

HOW MUCH FUN IS LIFE when you’re dancing 🙈🫠

Demo #2 with @brendacarvalhodancer and possibly one of my favorites ever!!!

So much joy and happiness and playfulness 🥹 makes me want to die!!!

Anyways, let’s get serious….

I want to share a little story.

One time an organizer was thinking about hiring me for a festival. In this festival there was a specific track for “flow zouk.”

He said something along the lines of, “ I don’t understand flow, you don’t really do anything, you just relax….”

I couldn’t help but laugh at the statement.

If you’ve ever taught or taken a dance class where the teacher says, “relax” you’ll know it doesn’t freaking work….

Relaxation, without structure, is collapsing and dangerous.

So yes, when I work with Brenda I see more and more the power of relaxation, but I also see the decades of training on structure that allows her body to relax.

And the more I learn how to apply this idea to my own body, the more I realize it’s the most intricate technique I’ve learned, while also being the most natural and pleasurable for my body.

I love this way so much, and we’re so excited to bring it more to the zouk world!!!

What happens when men have a space where they don’t have to prove anything?

A space to move, connect, challenge themselves, be honest, and simply be human.

Competitiveness. Judgment. Emotional walls. Loneliness. Self-doubt. So many men experience these things. Yet so often, we navigate them alone.

The Presence Project Men’s Group is an invitation to change that ✨

Across two sessions, we’ll create a space for presence, movement, vulnerability, challenge, accountability, celebration, and genuine connection.

A space where you can fail and win.
Where you can support others and be supported.
Where you can share without having to hide behind filters or expectations.

I (William) believe that with the right space to be truly ourselves, we will be able to see, accept, and act from a place that brings us both happiness, and fulfillment.

This group isn’t about becoming something different. It’s about seeing, accepting, and expressing more of who you truly are, so you can become who you’re capable of.
