Day 8 of Running Across India

I only went and bloody did it! Chennai to Mangaluru. 741.61km in 7d 11hr 2min. Couldn’t be happier.

Huge thanks to those that made it possible and to all of you who dug into your pockets and dropped a few pounds in to my charities coffers. It’s not too late and you can find my justgivving link in my profile and in my stories. If you enjoyed following me then maybe you can repay the entertainment with a few quid. Surely, its better value than Netflix ;)

Props to the brands that have supported me - @thenorthfaceuk @teamrunderwear @styrkr.uk @albaoptics @huel @tenzing @luckysaintbeer 🙌🏻

And a massive shout out to my crew - @rachelwhitenutrition @faisal.qadir.abdu @jamesdpoole and my new best friends from @turbochargedmag @abhay_v @shrenithbhandary87 - love you guys!

More to come in the coming days and weeks but right now I need to sleep and then drink a beer!

Remember this nutter?

This time last year, @robbo_will27 took on the epic (bonkers) challenge of running 200miles around the 500m loop of Queens Square in Bristol.

The idea for this ultra challenge evolved from a simple act of humanity, to help a friend get back to nature after a climbing accident that left him wheelchair dependent.

Everything about this story has our name written all over, pushing mental and physical boundaries beyond comprehension, encouraging the community to get outside and displaying acts of compassion that restore your faith in humanity just that little extra bit. A will that was unbroken.

Introducing ‘Unbreakable Will’ - a film by Friction Collective

We’re stoked to announce, a teaser of the film will be showing at this years Kendal Mountain Film Festival

Catch it in the The Endurance Session - presented by @inov_8 - feat. @jasminparis_fellrunner
on November 24, 2024, 12:30 - 2:30 PM GMT

We’ll be there over the weekend, come & say hey!

Keep your eyes peeled for the full film coming soon. There’s pain, laughs, exhaustion, tears, suffering, more tears and an incredible feat of determination. We hope you’re ready....

MISSION BALANCE - The heart might still be enlarged, but it’s never felt more fulfilled, balanced, and grounded.

This isn’t a sob story, but honestly, I didn’t expect the past six months to be such a mental challenge. Losing a sense of identity and the ability to stay active has been tougher than I thought.

I know I’m in no position to complain, given everything happening in the world each day, but I want to share my journey in case it helps someone else going through something similar.

My next appointment is on 13th May, and I’m hopeful my consultant will say my heart has reduced in size, no more talk of surgery and that I can begin reducing my medication, with a gradual return to running 🤞

For now, all I want to say is this ➡️ Your identity doesn’t define you. We have such a short time on this planet, so make the most of every single day by doing what truly makes you happy.

Loosing your identity is the perfect opportunity to reflect on your journey, experience new things and see life in a different perspective.

A huge thank you to the NHS, my friends and family, Beth (+ Dolly), and Avanti my big blue Land Rover 💙

DIAGNOSIS, HEART UPDATE AND TREATMENT — Aimed at raising awareness

THE DIAGNOSIS — After countless tests (on and off the treadmill), it’s confirmed that I’m in this position due to three factors:

1. A historic coarctation of the aorta — a repair on my aorta due to a narrowing when I was 3 days old.
2. Athlete’s heart — being an “athlete” it has led me to develop athlete’s heart, or exercise-induced cardiac remodeling (EICR), which has caused the heart to grow massively in size.
3. A congenital heart defect — which causes an atrial flutter.

HEART UPDATE — A recent test has confirmed that with just two weeks’ rest and the introduction of a strong cocktail of drugs, my heart has settled into a normal rhythm and reduced slightly in size. FUCKING GREAT NEWS!

The plan is to stay on the medication (heart rate blockers, blood thinners and blood pressure pills) and stay off exercise before reassessing the heart in a healthier state in circa three months.

THE TREATMENT — If my heart returns to a flutter and I develop strong palpitations again, a procedure called ablation will be the next best option. This involves burning the affected part of my heart, accessed via my femoral artery. It blows my mind, but this procedure commonly takes six hours, and you’re able to walk out of the hospital afterward.

Another massive thank you to the NHS. They’re truly leaving no stone unturned and throwing every test at me, on and off the treadmill. Thank you for your warm welcomes, calming discussions and thoughtful processes. You are all worth your weight in gold!

I’ve had countless messages and comments following my last post from people suffering from similar symptoms. Please help me raise awareness about our hearts health and highlight the importance of rest.

Stay tuned for the next update. Can’t wait to disclose the next chapter ❤️

PALPITATIONS – AWARENESS POST
Over the last two months, I’ve developed strong palpitations, which have lasted for up to 20 minutes and often resulted in me being light-headed.

After a worrying 24 hours in the hospital, it was confirmed that I’ve developed a heart defect and “Athlete’s Heart,” which has led it to double in size and recondition itself to what it thinks is a more efficient state.

TO BE CLEAR - I’m only writing this to raise awareness, as our heart health is rarely discussed. I certainly assumed that running miles and miles would never impact my heart negatively. With the sport of “Ultra” still on the rise, I feel it’s hugely important to talk about heart health.

The BIGGEST thank you to the NHS. The care and support I’ve received from the BRI in Bristol have been immense and flawless. The care you provide is unbelievable, and I’m extremely proud of how involved my family is in contributing to this outstanding service.

It’s been a big pill to swallow and has felt like a loss of identity, but I’ve always said that the parallel between ULTRA and LIFE is uncanny. The highs and the lows. It’s all about problem-solving. Find the issue. Solve it. Move on.

WHAT’S NEXT? A quick operation then three months of healing the heart and a distinct lack of coffee before reassessing the situation. I firmly believe life is about chapters. I’ll be back. I promise.

Please message me if you’re looking for any advice on the matter. I’d love to help.

👎PROJECT CANCELLED👎 - Sadly, due to abnormal weather conditions, I won’t be running 500km across a freezing cold country... Safety comes first - that envelope will have to wait to be pushed next year.

I’m a true believer in fate and things happening for a reason. Since making this decision, it’s been amazing prioritising people and experiences whilst having a break from the pressure of training and having time off my phone! This is something I will take on.

Life isn’t all about running and ultra endurance. Balance is key. Balance is beautiful. Balance is perspective.

That being said... Let’s use this baseline fitness and give a Midlands FKT a crack in few weeks!

Two years after finishing Queen Square, I’ve decided to retire from repetitive ultras. Pushing my mental strength to such extremes no longer scratches the itch.

Instead, I’ll use ultra running and riding to chase experiences and to show that we’re all far more capable than we think whilst also highlighting the benefits of moving our bodies.

Highlights from the last few years:
1. Queen Square (666 laps) – 320km # 🏃 | 52 hrs ⏰ | 18 min sleep 😴
2. Double Everest on Crowcombe Climb (122 reps) – 220 km 🏃 | 44.5 hrs ⏰ | 12 min sleep 😴
3. The Downs 1,000km TT (333 laps) – 1,000 km 🚴 | 37.5 hrs ⏰ | 37 min sleep 😴

Testing your mental strength is beautiful. It strips everything back until you’re left with your true character. You face highs and lows. But lows aren’t just lows — you problem solve, you find the issue, and you roll the dice again.

During the double Everest I hallucinated for hours, convinced I was in a cave tapping away at a wall with a plastic spoon that broke every time I touched the rock. That was a turning point for me.

So here’s the shift: it’s time for project priorities. Choosing experiences and journeys over mental games.

I’m incredibly proud to be joining the offical The North Face Explorer team.

This is far more sentimental than what you might think. In 1974, my grandfather John Robinson product tested a new TNF pack and kit with his family whilst they walked the GR5 (674km from Geneva to Nice). It’s epic to be following in his footsteps.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with TNF for 3 years and it goes beyond just a partnership, it’s about being equipped with kit that I trust for the adventures and endurance challenges that I undertake.

I push myself to encourage others to move their bodies and feel the benefits of doing so. It’s not about the size of the challenge it’s about showing up with a smile and enjoying the journey.

My aim is to challenge the slogan ‘Never Stop Exploring’ with the biggest smile and a bucket load of enthusiasm.

Adventures and envelope pushing inbound ❤️
