A blue moon...isn't blue🤥

What a blue moon actually is: the second full moon to occur in a single calendar month. May will have one on the 31st🌚

10 YEARS IN TV! 📺🌤️

Today marks my 10th anniversary as a broadcast meteorologist. 10 years ago, I walked into @krcg13news in Jefferson City, Missouri, as their newest meteorologist. After a great 2.5 years there, I made the move to West Michigan.

Now here at @newschannel_3 going on 8 years, it’s amazing to look back at just how much has changed: personally, professionally, and in our society.

While there’s been a lot of change, I remain just a passionate about local weather as I was when I started... probably even more so. I am so grateful for the ride thus far, especially for all of the viewers who have tuned in along the way.

I’ve been blessed to work with hundreds of amazing people over the years who have also left a huge mark on me. Getting to know so many people in the community as well is probably one of the coolest parts of this job.

The latest stop on our Exploring Michigan series is Caruso’s Candy & Soda Shop in Dowagiac! This family-owned candy shop and soda fountain has been going strong since 1922. The secret to their success might just be keeping things the way they’ve always been - stepping into Caruso’s is like stepping back in time.

Today, the shop is owned by Julie Johnson, whose grandparents were the original owners. She now carries on their legacy of hand-made candies and hand-dipped ice cream treats into its third generation.

In the craziness and devastation of last Friday, I didn’t have the chance to post this. During the morning of March 6th, the same day an EF2 tornado touched down in Three Rivers, I actually had been at Park Elementary on the north side of town that morning for a weather talk with their Kindergarten class.

Throughout our coverage I was thinking about these kiddos, their families and teachers. As part of my talks, even with kindergarten, we talk about severe weather safety, and knowing where to go during a tornado warning. We also talk about where students go at school, and why we have to practice tornado drills just like fire drills.

I did hear back from their teacher, and it sounds like everyone made it out okay.

She wrote: “What a strange coincidence that you had just been there talking with the students about tornado safety earlier in the day—but it actually ended up being really helpful! When we had to move to the hallway, the students transitioned without any problems. A few of them were asking why we couldn’t leave, and I was even able to use the saying “when the thunder roars, go indoors,” which helped them understand.

Thankfully, everyone is okay on our end. I hope you and yours are doing well too. Thank you again for coming in and sharing that information with the students—it really came in handy!”

Friday was a reminder, personally, of why visits like this are so important. Even young children understand the importance of tornado safety more than we give them credit for. While I know Friday was a day so many lost everything, including loved ones in both Edwardsburg and Union City, I am grateful no lives were lost in Three Rivers. #ThreeRivers #tornado #michigan #meteorologist taken in Three Rivers, Michigan by @willwwmt
