I found this thing from the bottom of my desk drawer again and realised that all the photos I've posted of this thing are pretty shit, so here's a few more shitty ones

I finished the restoration of the WW2 Franz Kuhlmann pantograph a few weeks ago. Well, almost finished, I still need to put a bit better bearings for the pulleys since they don't seem to like the speed that the machine runs at.
I needed to re-think the power delivery system because the original motor was attached to the linkage, but it was beyond saving and the new motor didn't fit in the place of the old one, thus I built this elaborate pulley system to deliver the power from the new placement of the motor on the column of the machine.
I also rebuilt the spindle, the original one used some weird proprietary form of F-type dead lenght collets that basically didn't even exist anymore, so I modernised it to take ER20 collets since they are so universal. I used a cheap aliexpress ER20 collet shank that I modified to fit in the original spindle, updated the original deep groove ball bearing to an ultra-high precision angular contact bearing, and ground the spindle to a perfect concentricity on my schaublin lathe (with a pretty ghetto-ass setup with a dremel)
I still don't know what the model of this machine is since I cannot find a single image on the Internet of this exact model of pantograph, no matter how much or what I tried.

By far the most tedious and annoying part of any machine tool restoration is not the scraping and alignment of ways and dovetails, or rebuilding high-accuracy spindles from rusted scrap, or sorting out a new motor to replace the old seized one, but the applying of filler, grinding, applying more filler, then grinding some more and applying more filler and grinding some more and applying more filler and grinding some more then grinding some more and applying more filler then grinding some more and applying more filler and then grinding some more and applying more fillert and hen grinding some more and applying more filler...... Before you can finally get to painting, only to be driven mad by all the endless imperfections that the paint reveals from your endless filling and grinding.

More to come on this WW2 era Franz Kuhlmann pantograph soon....

I was supposed to start my next tourbillon watch project already but I keep running into all kinds of distractions. But I swear I'll start the watch project once I rescue just another piece of vintage machinery... I swear! 😅

Made a version 2.0 of the division plate, now with 50% less jankyness and more than double the holes.

This time it ACTUALLY has all the possible divisions from 0 to 365. 173mm diameter with total of 7834 0,5 millimeter holes

Friday night needlework just for the fun of it 🤪 I could probably make it even longer if I had some really sharp aluminum inserts at hand but I don't by @windsormagistus

I finished the restoration of the old schaublin 70. Now I just need get a good motor and a VFD for it.
.
The headstock is completely refurbished, with a newly made bronze bearing at the front and the old bearing at the back refitted by hand scraping.
.
The cross-slide didn't need too much work since the dovetails were in surprisingly good condition, some parts like the hand-cranks were just rusted, same with the 4 slot revolver head for the tailstock.
.
I also decided to add a little bling to the base with faux gold leaf, and I think it looks pretty good 😁

I finally got around to do the new bearing for the old schaublin 70 as the previous one was too badly Fuckerized. It's not 100% perfect but it's still a billion times better than the starting point (last pic).
Now I'll just have to do the oil groove for it, and I was planning to just use a rotary tool and a ball burr to carve it free hand, and I will probably make it a bit more modern than the original, as the original only had a straight oil groove on the bottom, but newer schaublins gave a figure 8 oil groove which encompasses the entire bushing.
.
Then I'll give a quick touch up to the back bearing which is, surprisingly, in much better shape than the front bearing. After that I can start putting this old beauty back together

I made a quick&dirty follow rest bearing for my schaublin 102 Vm, since the original is practically impossible to get.
.
This ofcourse isn't adjustable like the original would be, but still pretty usable if I need to turn down long pieces of thin stock or cut thin thread rods.
.
I made this with a 10mm "chuck" where I can change a brass bushing with a different diameter hole, depending on what thickness of material I'm working with.
.
Im still working on the old schaublin 70 that I bought last spring, but sadly the bearings on the poor little lathe had been Fuckerized beyond any possibility of repair, so I will have to make new bearings for it at some point, when I get back to it in the future...
