Chief Carver and Dust Maker at Wingert Guitars. Sometimes I take pictures. Bespoke handmade guitars for discerning players, especially fingerstyle.

Wingert Model F, Adirondack spruce and Cocobolo rosewood. Shure MT88 into native iPhone video. The guitar is fabulous, the recording set up will need work. Lots of work. Apologies to Doug Young for what I’ve done to his beautiful arrangement.

On hold. Wingert Venus model. It’s a sweetheart with a 15 inch lower bout, and a very round, planetary body. Brazilian and European spruce with Jimmi’s Margaret Macdonald rosette.

This is one of my favorite end grafts by the world’s coolest daughter to collaborate with, the fabulous Jimmi Wingert Inlay. Not just inspired by, but directly stolen as much as possible from Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

Pardon the lighting, the color of the sides matches the back all the way around the guitar. You can see the addition to the horn extension. The sweet little shape had a design flaw: unless you were holding on, it can’t rest on your knee without slipping off. It’s a prototype. There will be appropriate discounting (but let’s not pretend a hand built, killer sounding guitar comes cheap!) it is a really good sounding guitar. It has a warm fundamental punch, with rich AND shimmering overtones. It’s exactly what I wanted when I sat with a OO and worked to change the thing that was missing for me. In the same way that I started with a dread to make a more comfortable fingerstyle balanced sound and ended up with my Model E, in this case I started with a comfortable OO and worked in more of what I like most: warm, round mids without losing articulation. I got more depth of sound without building a thicker body, which many have tried, but most abandon. 15 inch lower bout. 19 inch body length.

This one requires explanation. It’s a prototype. Call her Venus. The tone and response came out exactly as hoped, but not until I stashed it in a closet for five years. The reason? I let the look get in the way of designing a tool for making music. It would not sit safely on my knee! The cutaway horn was just too small and rounded.

I finally got around to doing something about it. I added the false outline horn to keep it safely in your lap. At the Artisan show most people said they thought it was cool, but two had the courage to tell me they didn’t like it. No offense taken.

Going forward, the shape of the top will look to be the same size, but the sides will be bent to that outside line. They might have a false side on the inside perimeter, or I might or might not port it there. Great guitars don’t benefit that much from porting, so I probably won’t do that.

The ebony support is perfectly fit, pinned, glued and stress tested. Don’t bounce it on concrete, but it’s stable.

Spoiler alert, it Brazilian.

15 inch lower bout, 19 inch body length. Swipe for another view.

Wingert Model E, Brazilian rosewood and German spruce. The music is Doug Young “When It All Comes Together” from his album Laurel Mill, played on a Wingert E of Cocobolo and German. A demo of the actual guitar is in the works.

Available soon.
Available as soon as I’m done picking nits and have a chance to describe the tone.

From deep in the UFB pile. (That’s un-freaking believable). In this case it’s braz. Available soon. I’m planning a demo, but if I can’t do it justice, I’ll have to make other arrangements.

I’ve been away from IG for so long the algorithms have ignored this image. The guitar sounds too good to be ignored. Available soon.

That is, available as soon as I’m done picking nits and have a chance to describe the tone. I’m planning a demo, one way or the other. I’m still fighting back from hand injuries. And as has been covered before, a mic is an audience. Sigh.
