Day 1 in Addis Ababa-Ethiopia 🇪🇹:
Turning Global Commitments into Youth-Led Action to End FGM.

Today’s discussions at the Global Youth Consultation and Orientation, The Race to 2030: Accelerating Youth-Led Action to End Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), highlighted both the urgency of the challenge and the power of collective action.

With over 230 million women and girls living with the consequences of FGM worldwide and millions of girls still at risk, the message is clear: progress must accelerate, resources must reach grassroots movements, and young people must be empowered to lead meaningful change.

Our discussions explored regional differences, religious and cultural perceptions, digital advocacy, online backlash, funding gaps, and the need for stronger partnerships. One key takeaway is that ending FGM requires more than awareness. It demands evidence-based interventions, community engagement, accountability, and sustained investment in girls’ education and youth leadership.

I am honoured to contribute to this global movement alongside young leaders, regional representatives, and partners, including United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) , UNICEF through the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, the African Union Commission, and other key stakeholders.

My sincere appreciation to @costlyaderibigbe and the outgoing GYC-HP Executive Committee for their dedication and contribution to transforming advocacy into action and laying a strong foundation for the movement.

To the incoming Executive Secretariat at the Global Youth Consortium Against Harmful Practices (GYC-HP), our responsibilities are to build on this legacy, strengthen partnerships and coordination, and translate our shared vision into measurable impact.

I believe our responsibility is to turn dialogue into coordinated action and ensure that young people are not merely participants in this movement, but decision-makers and agents of change.

The race to 2030 is on. Every girl deserves a future free from FGM and all harmful practices.

DAY 2 | THE RACE TO 2030: FROM YOUTH PARTICIPATION TO REAL POWER

Day 2 of the Global Youth Consultation and Orientation in Addis Ababa reinforced one key message: ending Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and other harmful practices requires more than commitments. It requires meaningful youth leadership, resources, accountability, and action.

My key takeaways:

🔹 Meaningful youth leadership: Young people must influence decisions, shape policies, and lead implementation, not simply participate in consultations.

🔹 Invest in youth-led solutions: Community initiatives, digital innovations, survivor-centred approaches, and grassroots advocacy need sustainable support.

🔹 Strengthen accountability: Commitments to ending FGM and child marriage must translate into measurable progress, with governments held responsible for implementation.

🔹 Turn evidence into action: Research and community-generated data must inform policies and reflect the realities of girls and underserved communities.

🔹 Fund youth movements: Sustainable financing, mentorship, and institutional partnerships are essential for lasting impact.

🔹 Leave no one behind: Rural girls, refugees, displaced persons, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups must be included in every response.

As we move towards the Addis Ababa Youth Declaration, our participation must translate into concrete commitments, adequate resources, and meaningful implementation.

The real measure of success is not how many young people sit at the table, but how much their voices influence decisions and change lives.

The race to 2030 is on. Young people are ready to lead. Now, institutions must be ready to share power and deliver results.

THE RACE TO 2030 | FROM DECLARATIONS TO ACTION

3rd day in Addis Ababa🇪🇹have reinforced one powerful message: young people must not only be heard at the table; they must have the power, resources, and space to influence decisions and drive implementation.

Ending FGM and other harmful practices requires more than commitments. It demands accountability, sustainable investment, survivor-centred approaches, community engagement, and the courage to challenge harmful norms, including the medicalization of FGM.

One message stands out: “Do not leave the declaration in the room. Take it to your countries and turn it into action.”

One Movement. One Voice. Accelerated Action.

I am honoured to join a generation working to protect the rights, health, dignity, and future of girls and women.
From 14-16 October 2026, youth leaders and partners will convene in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the Global Youth Consultation and Orientation: The Race to 2030, focused on accelerating youth-led action to end female genital mutilation (FGM).
This consultation builds on the commitment of the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation, which places girls’ agency, youth and women-led movements, and strengthened advocacy at the centre of efforts to eliminate FGM by 2030.
As the incoming Undersecretary for Administration of the Global Youth Consortium Against Harmful Practices
(GYCHP), I recognise that ending FGM and other harmful practices requires strong partnerships, evidence-informed advocacy, community engagement, institutional accountability, and meaningful youth participation in decision-making.
I look forward to engaging with fellow youth leaders, the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme, and other partners to contribute to the Consortium’s strategic priorities for 2027-2030 and the development of the Youth Addis Ababa Declaration, a collective youth call for accelerated action.
Young people must not simply be represented in these conversations. We must be equipped, resourced, and trusted to lead change alongside communities, governments, and development partners.
The Race to 2030 is a shared responsibility. Every girl deserves a future free from FGM and other harmful practices. @gptoendfgm @globalfgmyouthconsortium @globalfgm @unfpa.rwanda

From Graduation to Facilitation
November has carried me from academic celebration straight into purposeful community work.

From 24th November to 1st December, in Oyo and Osun State, I had the privilege of serving as Lead #Facilitator for a transformative session with women artisans and CBO representatives, under the #VFNAfrica Women’s Empowerment & Safety Programme.

✅We journeyed through conversations on sexuality and rights, sexual abuse prevention, mental health, STIs, family planning, disability and sexuality, and the subtle ways society, religion, media, and law shape these experiences.

I also coordinated peer-to-peer discussions, and the participants showed an admirable mix of curiosity, courage, and commitment their questions were bold, their reflections honest, and their desire to grow unmistakable.
Being in that room felt like watching knowledge ripple outward, person by person.

✅A core purpose of this programme is the elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) a harmful practice that steals bodily autonomy, safety, and dignity. Engaging communities with accurate information, open dialogue, and survivor-centred understanding remains essential to ending it. And this cohort showed readiness to carry that message forward.

😍One of the most meaningful moments for me was when VFN Africa honoured me with the responsibility of presenting certificates to participants a gesture that touched me deeply and reminded me why platforms like these matter.

My sincere appreciation to @valuefemalenetwork_ , @costlyaderibigbe @theabimbadesam for believing in my abilities and entrusting me with this important work, and @unfpanigeria whose partnership makes this impact possible.

November has been a month of growth, grounding, and giving back and I’m grateful for every step🙏🏾

🎓 I still remember the day I received my admission letter from PAULESI – Pan African University Institute of Life and Earth Sciences (Including Health & Agriculture), a proud initiative of the African Union Commission (AUC). At the time, I had just been offered a job at @edpu_africa. I spent the whole day reflecting… and then I chose. Soon, the path became clear ,I found myself in Nigeria, pursuing my Master’s in #ReproductiveHealth through the Pan African University (PAU).

🇷🇼 As the only Rwandan in my cohort, I carried my country’s hopes and dreams with me. Today, I return home not just with a degree, but with global perspectives, hands-on skills, strong leadership capacity, and a deep commitment to improving sexual and reproductive health across Africa.

📒 From vibrant classrooms to nights of research and challenges that pushed me beyond my limits, this journey was more than academics. It was purpose. Passion. Africa investing in me ,teaching resilience, leadership, and the power of community.

I now stand as a Reproductive Health Specialist, equipped to drive change through research, health programming, and sexual and reproductive health policy. I am passionate about using evidence to improve the lives of women and girls.

📍 On November 15, 2025, at the University of Ibadan, I crossed the graduation stage ,not just as a degree holder, but as a woman ready to lead, innovate, and transform reproductive health across Africa. This milestone is only the beginning. 🌍✨

To the @aucommission, #PAULESI, #PAU, and all my lecturers ,thank you for believing in me. To my family and friends, your love and encouragement carried me through every step. I am forever grateful. 🙏🏾❤️

Thank you all for being part of this remarkable chapter! This is just the beginning. 🚀

During my time studying medicine at Yangtze University, our Laoshi brought up the topic of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). I passionately argued that it was impossible for someone to survive having their genitalia cut and still lead a normal life. My classmates, however, explained that FGM was still practiced in certain countries as part of cultural traditions. I reluctantly concluded, “Every country has its own culture.”

Fast forward four years to my time at PAULESI, where I met @costlyaderibigbe an unwavering advocate determined to end FGM for good. I seized the chance to ask her all the questions that had lingered in my mind since my university days. Her answers opened my eyes, and in that moment, I made the life-changing decision to use my voice to fight against FGM and all harmful practices disguised as cultural norms.
🚨 Female Genital Mutilation is a Gross Violation of Human Rights! 🚨

Today marks the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM. This horrific practice has devastated the lives of over 230 million women and girls worldwide, stripping them of their dignity, health, and basic human rights. The consequences are severe—chronic pain, childbirth complications, psychological trauma, and even death.

In Africa, 144 million women and girls have been affected. In Asia, 80 million are suffering, while 7-8 million in the Middle East and other regions endure this violence in silence.

#FGMisNOTculture.
#FGMisNOTtradition.
#FGMisviolence.

Every girl is costly and deserves the right to grow up healthy, safe, and free from harm. It’s time we come together to protect, educate, and advocate for an end to FGM. We must raise our voices and take bold action to make FGM a thing of the past.

Join the fight. Stand up for women and girls. End FGM NOW.

Transforming Lives, One Flight at a Time 🚁

My visit to Zipline Muhanga @zipline_rwanda was nothing short of inspiring. This facility is a living example of how technology can bridge critical gaps in healthcare delivery and bring hope to the most underserved communities in Rwanda.

Zipline’s drones are designed to redefine logistics in remote areas, where distance and terrain often pose life-threatening challenges. With an incredible speed of 30 meters per second and a flight capacity of 2 hours round trip, these drones deliver lifesaving supplies—blood, vaccines, medications, and more faster and more efficiently than ever imagined. What once took hours or even days by road now takes just minutes, ensuring that no emergency goes unmet.

What’s truly extraordinary is the scale of operations. The Muhanga facility can dispatch over 300 drones daily, each equipped to deliver to precise locations across Rwanda. This isn’t just logistics; it’s a lifeline. By reducing delivery times, minimizing medical waste, and improving access to critical supplies, Zipline is transforming healthcare outcomes for the most vulnerable populations.

At the heart of this remarkable system lies meticulous coordination. From order placement at the call center to the exact moment a drone releases its cargo via parachute, every step is powered by innovation and precision. The process exemplifies the perfect union of technology and human ingenuity, showcasing what’s possible when purpose drives innovation.

This visit was a powerful reminder that the future of healthcare logistics isn’t about machines alone—it’s about the lives saved, the hope restored, and the communities empowered. Zipline’s work is a beacon of what we can achieve when we dare to dream big and act boldly.

Swipe through the pictures to see how this groundbreaking process unfolds in real-time! ➡️

Day-2 at the Nigeria Family Planning Conference (NFPC) 2024 👏Family planning is not just a health issue; it is a key driver of economic growth, empowerment, and sustainable development. Dr. Salma Ibrahim Anas’ quote, “Do not have children that your vehicle cannot carry,” highlights the importance of responsible family planning in shaping a prosperous future.

At #NFPC2024, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole emphasized that family planning should be viewed as essential for national growth and policy development, calling for public-private partnerships to advance these efforts.

A huge thanks to my supervisor, Prof. Imran Morhason-Bello, for introducing me to Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, and @valuefemalenetwork_ for giving me the opportunity to represent us at this important conference.
Keynote speakers like Ms. Amina J. Mohammed and @samukeliso.dube14 highlighted the role of inclusive data and collaboration with the private sector in achieving global family planning goals 2030.

I agree with the youth representatives at #NFPC2024 that youth involvement in policy-making is essential to tackle SRH, GBV, FGM, early marriage, and lack of awareness about family planning. It’s crucial to address these issues at the grassroots level for inclusive and effective policies.

#Takeaways:
✅ Family planning drives economic and societal growth.
✅ Public-private partnerships are crucial for progress.
✅ Women’s health and rights are key to sustainable change.

As a delegate of @valuefemalenetwork_ , I participated in the 8th Nigeria Family Planning Conference 2024, themed “Sustaining Commitments for Family Planning within the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Programs in Advancing Progress Toward Achieving FP2030 Goals”, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

Day 1 featured engaging discussions on advancing reproductive health policies, innovations, and partnerships. Dr. Ejike Oji opened the conference with a session that emphasized the critical role of collaboration and community action in achieving family planning goals. Keynote speakers, such as Dr. Funmilola OlaOlorun and Prof. Brian Adinma, underscored the need for data-driven approaches to address Nigeria’s family planning challenges and highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in meeting the ambitious FP2030 goals. These discussions set the stage for impactful and actionable solutions rooted in evidence-based strategies.

A standout presentation by Oladotun Okediji delved into youth engagement in the Nigeria Family Planning Blueprint. It revealed that while youth-friendly services are prioritized, their involvement in policymaking remains minimal. This limited participation, especially of adolescent girls and young women, presents a gap that could hinder progress toward FP2030 goals. This insight reinforces the need for inclusive decision-making that values the lived experiences of young people, ensuring policies reflect their unique reproductive health needs.

Day 1 highlighted the necessity of fostering partnerships, prioritizing youth involvement, and centering gender equity in family planning policies. With discussions led by thought leaders like Dr. Martin Migombano and Prof. Okonofua, the conference provided a platform for driving collective action toward accessible, responsive, and inclusive family planning services. It was an inspiring start to a critical dialogue on advancing reproductive health in Nigeria and beyond. #valuefemalenetwork #unfpa #unwomen #unfpanigeria #reproductivehealth #Nigeriafamilyplanningconference2024 #FP2030 #youthengagement #PAULESI #PAU #AUC by @winnyclemence

What an unforgettable week 🫰🏾😍From October 15-19, I had the honor of participating in the Girls’ Empowerment and Safety Program in Osun State, supported by @unfpanigeria and @valuefemalenetwork_ This transformative journey empowered young girls with knowledge, confidence, and leadership skills to embrace their potential and take charge of their futures. Special thanks to @uzomjay for her invaluable guidance and insightful session on FGM, which played a crucial role in our advocacy efforts. Through comprehensive sessions on Sexuality Education, workshops on leadership, body image, and advocacy against harmful practices, we equipped these brilliant minds to become strong advocates and leaders in their communities. Watching them rise, share their voices, and practice skills through hands-on activities like making sanitary pads was truly inspiring. This experience has not only ignited their confidence but also reinforced the importance of empowering girls for a better society. Proud to be part of this powerful movement 🫰🏾❤️! #GirlsEmpowerment #Leadership #SexualityEducation #Advocacy #EndFGM #EmpowerGirls #YouthLeadership #UNFPANigeria #VFNAfrica by @winnyclemence
