Pull The Sky Inside is the new Winter Aid album, and it is out now (link in bio).

It is very strange to have this finally out in the world, after having worked on it in one way or another for years and years.

My favourite moments:
- the drums kicking in after the first chorus of Secret Sister
- the shivery guitars in Inner Sunset (i wanted them to sound like the SF fog coming over the hills, and they do)
- the pianos that lead Pull The Sky Inside out of the dark
- the way the chorus of Holy Mary sounds a bit like mass
- Carol Anne's voice on Papercuts as it goes out of control

If you want to go straight to the quiet sad songs, today I am feeling particularly proud of 'Holy Mary' and the title track (tracks 9 and 15).

Writing and recording a song is one of the most rewarding things I know how to do, and the feeling of capturing a song as it slowly arrives is phenomenal. Releasing an album, however, with its administrative deadlines and endless checklists and ever-demanding "Share" buttons, often feels like the exact opposite.

I am very grateful to everyone who has sent a kind message over the last few years - knowing that The Wisp Sings has continued to reach people even ten years later has been a great source of motivation and inspiration. I love you all.

thanks for listening. taken in San Francisco, California by @winter.aid

Ten years and over a billion plays later (thank you, melancholy tiktok creators!) The Wisp Sings is finally out on on vinyl, along with this special extended anniversary edition. It's got session versions, alternate takes, reworks, a live cover version, and a song that was cut from the original EP at the last minute.

I'm very happy to see it out in the world - and to revisit The Wisp Sings now that it's become something so dear to so many people.

Out now: a song I've been working on for years, about a kind of haunting.

This clip is from the beautiful video made by Joey Bania (who made the original video for The Wisp Sings ten years ago), which you can see on YouTube now (link in bio).

This isn't what most of the album sounds like, and it's not the kind of song I usually write, but when this one came together I think it's the proudest I've ever been of my songwriting, so it feels good to get it out. I have since figured it out how to sign it quietly, on one guitar, and I'll share that version soon, but I know I needed to figure out the euphoric buzzsaw version first, if that makes sense. You have to capture and name the song that shows up before you can get it out of your head and work it into the song you want.

Anyway, thank you for listening. I hope you like it. taken in San Francisco, California by @winter.aid

Great to see "20th & Mississippi" making friends, and spending time in such fine company (I love Adrienne Lenker's new songs so much). TY Spotify for clarifying that my folk is sad but also fresh! taken in San Francisco, California by @winter.aid

This new song was stuck for a long time until I came across a painting of a street corner near my home, a painting that seemed to have all the little secrets and sadness and warmth that I was feeling, stuck in lockdown San Francisco in 2020, having a terrible time in a beautiful place.

Out now on all streaming platforms - find it on the new album Pull The Sky Inside, out in May. taken in Potrero Hill by @winter.aid

announcement: there is a new winter aid album. it will be out in May. it has fifteen songs, some of them are happy and some of them (most of them) are sad.

it is about a lot of things, i suppose, but it is very much about leaving Ireland and loving California - and maybe even more about missing Ireland and feeling unsettled in California. A friend said it sounds like displacement, which seems fair enough to me.

most of the songs are quiet but some of them have a bit of a kick.
It's got the saddest song I've ever written and the happiest. if you would like to hear a happy song (it's not really happy, but the music is pretty upbeat!) there is a great video for new single Silk on YouTube (or at winteraid.com) for you to enjoy.

I'm very proud of this album and can't wait for everyone to hear it. I'm very grateful to finally be putting it out. And as always: thank you for listening. taken in San Francisco, California by @winter.aid

It's Friday, which means the Inner Sunset EP is now available for streaming wherever you stream music (but also on Bandcamp).

It's the first set of new songs I've released since moving to California, so it might sound a bit more laid-back (and maybe sunnier?) than usual.

I'm back home in Ireland, and stopped into the national broadcaster to chat to Ray D'Arcy about that song I wrote and where it's taken me. Link in bio! taken in RTÉ Radio Centre by @winter.aid
