Here’s something special to celebrate the 100th birthday of that hero of the natural world, Sir David Attenborough! A beautiful Macleay’s Swallowtail butterfly, feeding on the flowers of Verbena bonariensis in our Zeehan garden. I’d been hoping to see one of these ever since we moved in last October, and we finally had a visit in April! Hopefully they laid some eggs on the young Sassafras trees we’ve planted. This butterfly is the only swallowtail species in Tasmania and it’s not often seen, so we feel very lucky to have had such a close encounter! It was much less timid than other butterflies and was completely unbothered by our presence.

Flaming Parrot tulip after Spring rain. Hello again everyone!❤️I’ve been stupidly busy doing something I never thought would be possible- buying a house! I still can’t believe I’m actually going to be able to plant an 880 square metre garden of my own, and have an actual, proper, big workroom! More details later, as I’m in the throes of packing right now, possibly for the last time in my life. For someone who has moved house 18 times in the past 30 years, and was resigned to never having real housing security, this is a momentous thing. Huge gratitude to dearest Johnny and Maureen- we miss you and love you both.❤️❤️

Whilst we’re all waiting for WWIII to properly get going, take a look at the hand-stitched Tumbling Blocks quilt I finally finished for my lovely son @jamiezedd ! It’s taken 4 years, off and on, with an estimated 60,000 stitches🪡 Now it’s happily in it’s new home on his bed- just in time for the winter weather❤️We had fun taking it out into the wild for a photo shoot in Bidencopes Lane, Hobart- traditional handcraft meets modern street art❤️Scroll through for some up-close details and two shots of a happy son with his new quilt!😊

Just a big, bright quilt block to brighten your day. As you know, all my stitching is done by hand, but I actually made this using a sewing machine!😬I decided it’s time to conquer my fear of machines as one day I’d really like to make some of my own clothes. But I’m just making quilt blocks at the moment. Thanks to @wafuworks for the super saturated red vintage kimono lining and beautiful dark indigo ikat spots❤️And to @wovenstoriestextiles for the gorgeous Indian hand-dyed and hand-blocked indigo cottons. And also to @honeyfibers for the fantastic block pattern that even my addled brain could follow! I’d quite like a full size quilt of this one🪡

‘Lovebird’ is now available! I really enjoyed hand-stitching this chap, and using a special little antique key I found in France a decade ago! There are some special fabrics in this piece too- vintage Japanese silks, hand block-printed Indian cottons and vintage quilting fabric. The background textile is some 60 year old raw and unprocessed mulberry silk, so any slight discolouration is because of its age and is part of its natural beauty. I’ve stretched the work over acid-free canvas with a stained and varnished wood floating frame, and it’s ready to hang! Please scroll for detailed photos. Some finished work at last! It’s so brilliant to stitch properly again now the carpel tunnel in my hands has settled down! This moth is for dear Lou, who must be the most patient person ever❤️
Hand stitched using old curtain linen, vintage Japanese ikat silks, printed cotton, wool felt and vintage wool scraps, with tiny Japanese glass beads for the eyes. Swipe to see some details.

It’s a new, frightening and rage-inducing year, and I can’t stitch because of carpal tunnel in both my hands. But I can still make small hopeful things that give me a little bit of relief from the hatefulness that seems to get more brazen in its expression every day. Here’s a talisman, made from a hag stone, driftwood, a wooden bead and nettle twine. Hag stones are said to ward off nightmares. If only they could protect us from the nightmare reality of Trump, and the power hungry politicians in Australia and the UK who now hope to bring the same ugliness to their countries. As a disabled person with a gay son and ND husband, this hateful shit feels very close to home. Much love to those who didn’t want this would-be dictator. Keep safe and know you’re not alone.
