My last sip of deep canyon springs in a canteen by my side. Coming down from the chill of the Fort Wingate woods, dead silence this morning.
Now, North from Thoreau riding 99 miles. Windows down, cool air, big tires humming.
This Navajoland, this highest desert. We drilled, we dug, we blew it to bits the best we can. Then we gave them god, but not a saving, then we gave them a home that was inhospitable, then we said “you’re on your own”.

East at Farmington. Anvil clouds behind me. Green meadows and crumbling sand cliffs as the Carson’s forested hills lead me through Apache land now.
Yards full of old trucks. Chrome and fractured glass heaped in the growing grass, twinkling when the sun escapes the shadow of the cloud.

Ahead is Chama, and Ghost Ranch beyond.
Tonight I’m in a grassy field thinking of atomic prairie dogs and the lands across these fields.

For the past 13 years you’ve been along side us for every step. Backroads and forest trails, river walks and the pacific sea. You’ve been our constant star with which we’ve pondered all the important things. The silly things. The quiet things. And the wild things. Sometimes you’re singing your songs and maybe we’ll try and sing along. A steady warmth , a knowing look, so independent and always vigilant. All these years, lazy Sundays, California canyons, 10000 miles, lizard tails and endless beaches. We’ve taken you home, across the sea across the Great Plains, to the monuments that made us, and you went with poise and joy. I’m realizing now that you believed home is where ever we were….. together.

No big post about the hospital this week. Instead, let’s take a final walk along one of the wards together.
This place is truly magnificent. by @winterlamaster

Here are some recent scenes from LA County General Hospital. I wasn’t planning on doing any before / after (maybe this is more like “during and currently”) but I had to improvise a bit today.
The last 2 slides and the first 2 slides are almost perfectly aligned (not bad considering I was going from memory!)
It’s kind of poignant in a way, the preparations for a changing of seasons as fall approaches.
I was honestly kind of dreading seeing this place all cleaned out. But after seeing new light entering formerly dark corners, I’m hopeful. by @winterlamaster

Outside of Elkader township, off Highway 83, sits this anomalous geological feature most people miss when passing through Kansas.
One of the 8 Wonders of the state, these chalk monoliths stand awkwardly in the middle of a vast prairie land usually filled with cattle, corn, or grass. Magnificent in their weirdness, they appear suddenly after driving down some miles of single lane gravel roads, past endless post and wire fencing, and making a right at the solitary stop sign.
This was also once a Butterfield stagecoach stop. Why? According to the local historian I met, it was the only identifiable landmark within 1000 miles.
Not much has changed.
Kansas has a lot to see, you’ve just got to actually look. by @winterlamaster

Down past the old mill, unwatered fields, grass so dry like we didn’t get burned years ago. Like we didn’t know fire could come from doing nothing, and live a gluttonous day, and then leave taking everything you thought you had.
All those tools were for a purpose. In the knowing hands, wielded for a price, for a time, believing in a promise.
But even the sweet fields that were sown here turned rotten. The bosses cut the laborers down, Cain to those that were still able.
Here lies those that got the rewards. Those who saw the fruit in the midst of harvest. Plows and scythe as quiet as this grave yard now. The church is a husk, and the old school too.
The market is closed. So is the museum.
Under this sun, under this grass moved by the wind, under this soil, a rest, a forever rest. A forgotten sleep. by @winterlamaster

Hello again. I’ve been wrapping up some projects over here that have taken me away from posting our favorite historic hospital. Here’s a little archival update for you!
These were shot primarily during the first month of this project (I say “project” but it’s more like a privilege to be doing this).
You can see I was just trying to get my bearings inside The General as I began to really understand the size , take in layers of architectural details, and uncover modern archeological artifacts that the world had forgotten.

Slide 1- A small exam room on the 17th floor. I’m assuming this chair may have been for a pediatric patient.

Outside of the Surgical Theater was an entire wing dedicated to teaching surgery to students and visiting doctors. This was a prep room adjacent to one such OR with some ledgers and medical literature left behind.

Another room near the Operating Theater. I’m unsure if these were an AV set up for observation, some type of monitoring equipment, or ????

This was the second room I went into on my first day of photography at The General. The tile work fascinated me. Even after almost 100 years it was immaculate! I knew the room had to look much different than it did in 1932: the plaster walls, the odd placement of the pipe, it all told me that there were secrets and mysteries in every corner of this space.

This little bit of equipment was tucked in the shadows alongside a dark hallway.
It’s an Emerson post-op aspirator from the 1950s-1970s (??).
Finding these bits of machinery was always neat. To know this was in use probably until the facility closed is remarkable! Machines like this were the standard in many major hospitals. It served a purpose, and did so very well.

There are so many wards, and wings, and hallways, sometimes it gets overwhelming because…. On one hand you want to catalogue everything! And on the other hand you also don’t want to have 1000 random hallways to edit and inventory 😅. This is one of those.

This was the very first time I’d been “outside” the quiet halls of the General. On the upper floors you’d have an elevated perch to see the exterior, although the field of view was very limited.

It’s less urban exploration, and more like architectural archaeology. I adore these types of spaces.
Seeing the eras of ideas reflected in remodeling efforts: wall paper textures, lighting fixtures, dry wall vs wood paneling, etc etc. Every good building tells a little story, has some secrets, and is a fond memory for someone who passed through the halls.
I know Mike (my host on this location scout) was probably annoyed because every door we’d open my comment was “Oh wow! This is fantastic!” , but that’s the energy I bring 😅🤷🏽‍♂️

This is the last time I’ll ever photograph the inside of a detention facility.
You see, while the hospital is mostly a place of hope, help, support, healing… the jail ward is bereft of that intention.
Like many of you, I’ve had close acquaintances who have danced on both sides of the law. Aside from the burn unit, this place was the hardest to photograph…… you can just feel the residual emotional damage this floor holds.

The main hall on 13. As of 2025 these gates still worked. Cameras were still operational. LASD still routinely checked in on this ward.

Inmate bench in the main holding area. The inclined walkway to the right led up to the exam rooms.

Hand drawn instructional diagrams for the officers assigned to the floor.

Artifacts of incarceration.

A holding cel for inmates waiting to see a physician. Bleak.

An exam or possibly an operating room. Before the 13th floor was acquired by LASD for inmate medical care, it was a regular floor for doctors, students, and patients.

An X-ray room on the 13th floor. Notice the mirror in the corner. Remember- trust but verify.

X-ray machine detail.

X-ray viewing room adjacent to the attending physicians offices.

Inside the Juvenile holding cel.

Hallway of the Juvenile holding area.

A stainless bench for inmate patients. The eye hooks were for shackles / restraints.

Should you need to get a hold of the dungeon, Doctor Sleep, or Lucky.

Main facilities control room. Here a deputy would be able to control entry and exit to each of the main holding areas.

Detail of the control panel.

Main hallway on 13. The small door on the left held a narrow stairway to officers locker rooms.

Inside looking out- this is where inmates would meet and talk with visitors by using the phones on the wall. The windows are bullet proof glass.

These once held the belongings of inmates brought to the ward.

The old gym.

Drawing near, the end of this place as I have come to know it. October on the horizon much too soon, and my time listening to, and discovering every corner of this magnificent haven is near completion.
This frame- inside a former x-ray room looking into an empty waiting room.

Huel Howser special! A scale and suspended rail for the delivery of goods for the massive, massive LA County General kitchens. (Not pictured: the custom built freight elevator installed specifically to haul meat and produce to the grand kitchen.)

Items marked for salvage / re-use. Chances are the coat stand was made onsite by the in-house carpenters.

A bench and small doorway in a former surgical theater. Students and attending staff would sit in these small stands and watch as surgical staff performed cutting (no pun intended) edge procedures. The LA County General Hospital was the world’s largest teaching hospital for many decades.

The things we hastily leave behind. As each floor of the building is shut down and prepared for its new life, remains of its former inhabitants and occupants still lay about.

The permanence of impermanence: even equipment ,that at one time seemed essential, has reached the end of its servitude.

This is an original walk in freezer door from when the hospital was built in 1934.

No longer needed. The discarded reminders of lives now past.

The galley area of a cold storage area in the old kitchen.

Modified- hard to tell what its original purpose was, as over the decades this room has been renovated to accommodate changes in hospital needs.

Short walk through the kitchen loading dock.

Upper floor exterior. The impressive scale of the masonry and fixtures throughout this building is overwhelming.

Just a few months ago this area was still active with administrative staff, hospital workers, etc. Now, so quiet.

The remains of a lab. One of hundreds that once served every floor.

Hallway. Seems pretty obvious.
