It's arrived! ✏️  We're delighted to have won the D&AD wooden pencil award for The Guardian's election coverage, photographing paper cutouts to emphasise the paper-thin fragility of todays politics in the UK, the US and Australia. The handmade, real & tangible creations represent truth & authenticity in a world increasingly dominated by AI 🤖

Here's a snippet of my artwork plus shots from the studio, courtesy of Chris Clarke 📸 it's been a full team project, and we all have the papercuts to prove it, devs included ✂️

Last week marked 2 years since Alford Gardner passed away, aged 98. He was one of the last remaining Windrush passengers who once said he “didn’t expect to be a part of history,”

A year before his passing we had the pleasure of publishing an interview and shoot with him at The Guardian. He recalled his arrival in Britain 75 years ago, where the ‘damn cold’ was the only thing that bothered him, and shared personal photographs from his life in the UK. It is still one of the loveliest interviews I’ve ever read.

Had fun animating the illustrations of @cynthiakittler last Friday morning - even her roughs were beautiful ✏️

Happy Birthday to The Guardian’s Filter; our independent product review hub which is now two years old. We celebrated by sharing 31 things we loved this year, from cloud-like duvets to the perfect running shoe 🥳 Our page views for this big birthday piece were up over 50% on last year and engagement time was 93/100 on our benchmarked attention score (meaning it was read for longer on average than 92% of articles of a similar length)

Kudos to the Filter journo’s and Cynthia’s fun party of artwork! Never has a welly boot looked so charming 🎈 by @wishartellen

A belated thank you to the students of Falmouth University for listening to my colleagues and I talk (spiral) about the chaos of Art Directing at The Guardian 🗞

Walking through a decade of wrangling video, digital and print design, this was a great excuse to stare wistfully into the distance and say 'oh I remember when....' 😍 by @wishartellen

@topolskistudio walks us through the paintings and drawings of Feliks Topolski — official war artist of World War II. He had unrivalled access to key figures of history in the making, from government officials to imprisoned activists.

If you're looking for today's equivalents, please explore the work of these incredibly emotive artists, covering the effects of war in Palestine and Ukraine today:

Every year the Guardian’s reporting leads to real moments of change. Speak to any reporter in our newsroom and they will likely be able to tell you about many stories that have had a direct tangible impact on changing people’s lives. This in-house illustration crafted from our print products of 2025 includes just a small selection of those stories from the last 12 months:

✒️ After the publication of the Boris files, a series of investigative pieces into the post-office finances of Boris Johnson, an ethics watchdog ruled that the former prime minister breached rules designed to stop the abuse of contacts and access made in public office.

✒️ The jailed Egyptian writer Alaa Abd el-Fattah was released from prison and reunited with his family, including his 90-year-old mother, who underwent a series of punishing hunger strikes to draw attention to his plight. The Guardian highlighted Abd el-Fattah’s story over the six years he was imprisoned.

✒️ A stunning Guardian investigation by Mark Townsend into the 72-hour attack on Sudan’s largest refugee camp discovered repeated testimonies of mass executions and abductions. Powerful reporting revealed more than 1,500 civilians that may have been killed in an attack on North Darfur’s Zamzam camp. The investigation found the number killed by Rapid Support Forces far greater than the estimates at the time, in what would be the second-biggest war crime of the country’s devastating civil war.

✒️ Microsoft terminated the Israeli military’s access to technology it used to operate a powerful surveillance system that collected millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls. The decision followed months of reporting by Harry Davies and Yuval Abraham of +972 about Israel’s use of Microsoft’s services in Gaza.

Welcome to The Guardian’s Filter Christmas Gift Guide! Each department of our online store was led by a signature Sandra Navarro illustrated character, showing us how to live our best lives in 2026 🎁

In the first weekend alone, page views were up 43% on 2024 — a true testament to the Filter team and the trust readers built with them throughout 2025. The guide delivered a 70% increase in revenue and secured the number one Google ranking for “best Christmas gifts” and "best Christmas gifts 2025" 🥂

As the guide was mahooOoOoOooosively long, we kept development down to a minium. Colour coding each section was a simple way to help our readers navigate the collections of our 305 items, headed up by a classic @sandranavarro_illustrator artwork ✏️

As of the end of July there were 18,457 children named on the long official list of Palestinian victims. Over almost two years, that is equivalent to killing a boy or girl every hour of every day.

In reality the deaths are not spaced out so evenly. Siblings, cousins and playmates are often killed together, by an airstrike or artillery shell. Even children shot by snipers or quadcopters are sometimes brought into hospitals in groups, doctors say.

The children’s names appear on a list of victims of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, maintained by health authorities in the territory. As of the end of July it ran to 60,199 names, of whom 18,457 were under 18s. Far from comprehensive, the list does not include the thousands still buried under the rubble of destroyed buildings, as well as the war’s many indirect victims
