Breaking into IT in Brisbane, part 1 ☁️

Went to AWS Community Day and asked people already in the industry what actually works. Here is what they told me:

✅ Homelabs + volunteer IT work counts
✅ Learn Amazon's leadership principles
✅ Bias for action
✅ Know your basics so you can check AI's work

An Amazon engineer told me homelabs count 👀 Here's how I am building one for free 👇

1. VirtualBox: run virtual machines on your laptop
2. Windows Server: free 180-day evaluation to practise Active Directory
3. Proxmox VE: free hypervisor (turn an old PC into a server)
4. Cisco Packet Tracer: build and test networks without real gear

No spare PC? Start with VirtualBox or VMware. Your laptop is enough. :)

Switch and Router confused me for ages 😭 This is the easiest way I have found to see it 👇

- Switch = connects devices INSIDE your network (laptop, PC, printer)
- Router = connects your network to OTHER networks, like the internet

Your home Wi-Fi box is actually a router + switch + Wi-Fi access point in one :O

2. Microsoft's free practice assessment: real exam-style questions, and you can retake it as many times as you like

3 terminal commands every beginner should know 👇

1. cat / type - read a file
2. rm / del - delete a file, careful!
3. history / h - see past commands

(Linux/Mac first, Windows second)

Heads up: rm doesn't ask "are you sure?" and it skips the recycle bin so double check before you hit enter 😅

1. touch / ni → make a file
2. cp / copy → copy it
3. mv / move → move or rename it
