It takes 400,000 minutes to grow a baby, but that’s nothing compared to the ongoing, endless, perpetual growth of a mother.

It starts the moment she learns she’s expecting and it continues long after the baby is born.

The transition into motherhood is a transformation of its own. It takes time to adjust, to find your footing, and to get to know the person you’re becoming.

Remember… The baby isn’t the only one growing. Mom is too, and she deserves to be cared for, nurtured, and supported after the birth and beyond 🤍 by @withelizabethb

This World Mental Health Day, Sorette Advisor Elizabeth Baron – a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in maternal mental health – shares an important reminder for mothers everywhere.

While there is often so much focus on physical well-being during pregnancy and motherhood, emotional health can easily be overlooked. Even if someone appears to have it all together on the outside, they may be quietly struggling on the inside.

Please know that you never have to struggle alone. Maternal mental health challenges are treatable, and finding a safe, supportive community can be a powerful part of healing.

If things ever feel too heavy or you’re unsure about how you’re feeling, please don’t hesitate to reach out to @withelizabethb’s team for support and guidance. 🤍

“Enjoy it while it lasts.”

Translation? 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘣𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘸.

And when you’re not, it’s easy to assume something is wrong with you.

But there isn’t.

Ambivalence isn’t failure.
Difficulty isn’t failure.
Not enjoying every moment isn’t failure.

But we ARE failing moms when we expect them to be happy all the time.

So next time you’re feeling the pressure, remember this:

You don’t have to love every part of motherhood to be a good mother. by @withelizabethb

To all the moms who are wrapping up a weekend of nonstop parenting and heading into the “Sunday Scaries”:

We see you, we’re with you, and we salute you!

Our tips?

Pause and breathe whenever you can 😮‍💨

Prioritize what matters most ☑️

Ask for what you want — more space, more hugs, more help, whatever feels right 🙏

Remember: It’s normal to be tired. This sh*t is exhausting! 😅 by @withelizabethb

There’s something really powerful about being in a room (even a virtual one) with other mothers and realizing: Oh. It’s not just me.

That’s why I loved last week’s conversation with @the.nest.nyc, @itsleahsmart, and Jessica Pallay from @vivviearlylearn about returning to work after having a baby.

We shared our personal experiences, normalized the challenges of this season of motherhood, and offered guidance on reprioritizing what matters most to you and your family.

Sometimes support isn’t just in a therapy session. It’s in the spaces where we’re able to pause, process, hear someone say, “I’ve been there,” and think to yourself, “me too.” 💗 by @withelizabethb

Perfectionist? ☑️
Type A personality? ☑️
High achiever? ☑️

If this sounds like you and you’re a mom with a partner, you might also be engaging in “maternal gatekeeping.”

For many, it’s an innate habit. It might also be a self-fulfilling prophecy when moms believe they can and should “do it all.”

But maternal gatekeeping can come with a cost.

• Less bonding between your partner and child

• More friction between you and your partner

• More and more and more added to your plate

• Overwhelm, exhaustion, and burnout

So, how can you work on this habit and gain more time and space for yourself?

• Open a dialogue with a collaborative (rather than critical) approach.

• Start with 1 or 2 tasks you want your partner to handle.

• When those tasks are being done, do something else (ideally something fun or restorative) instead.

It might not be easy… It might take time… AND it might lead to more joy and less stress in your life, your partnership, and your family unit. by @withelizabethb

Of course you want the best for your baby or child. Yet, managing and overseeing every detail of their care, routines, and upbringing can lead to unintended consequences for you, your mental health, and your relationships.

Is it hard to break this habit? We can’t lie. It sure is.

But here are some tips:

- Start by identifying one task that you’re micromanaging and that a partner or co-caregiver has expressed willingness to perform or has tried to perform in the past. Making bottles? Packing lunches? Doing the bedtime routine?

- Open up communication to acknowledge you’ve criticized or limited their involvement and that you want to share more responsibilities for the benefit of your relationship and family system.

- If there are non-negotiables with health and safety, discuss those expectations and then agree to give the other person freedom and flexibility outside of those important rules.

- Disconnect from the task, even if that means physically removing yourself from the space. Take a break, go for a walk, do another activity you enjoy, or simply go in another room when the task is being done.

- Resist the urge to hover, follow up, or correct even if the task was not done perfectly or how you would have done it.

- Stay the course. Let the other person continue to manage that task even if it takes a while for you to get comfortable with this transfer of responsibility.

- If perfectionism, anxiety, or relationship strain continues, consider reaching out for therapy. by @withelizabethb

In motherhood, there’s room for everything: love, frustration, resentment, compassion, boredom, fulfillment, gratitude, and grief. The list goes on and on...

And, with all of those feelings, ambivalence is inevitable. Uncertainty is normal. And learning as you go is pretty much required.

So, remember this: There is no perfect standard of motherhood. No trophy for “doing it all” and “getting it right.”

Just like the little humans you’re raising, YOU are a work in progress, too. by @withelizabethb
