A few weeks ago the Animal Cancer Center @ncstatevetmed hosted their second annual Celebration of Life - an evening of remembrance at the Vet Med Library. This celebration was for those families and loved ones whose companions were deeply cared for by radiation and oncology at NC State, and have since returned to the universe. ✨

It was an honor to grieve in community with others who are on similar grief journeys and have experienced a similar death.

The event included beautiful music (Hal’s oncologist, Dr. Ostrom, was in the band playing banjo!!!), poetry, shared stories, and creating memorial items. The celebration even sent every participant home with a framed photo of their loved one.

We can’t believe it’s been 38 days since our Hal pal returned to the universe. We miss him so much it hurts. 🤍

This portrait of Hal dressed as Hal from WALL-E (Hal is WALL-E’s bff cockroach in the film) is everything and more than I could have ever dreamed. I commissioned this portrait from the peerless Katie ( @boneheadart ) as a gift for @cool_phil ‘s birthday, shortly after Hal returned to the universe. Having had portraits of @thepugwalle and our Tinker done by Katie in 2020, I knew it was essential to have our Hal painted in Katie’s brilliant style - she perfectly encapsulates Hal’s little nuances and his spirit AND added in the Twinkie and Christmas lights and a lil space ship thermos to bring together Hal and the film of his namesake all in one portrait. It’s artistic perfection.

This portrait has brought us such joy in our grief since our Hal pal returned to the universe. There is something particularly comforting about seeing Hal’s portrait hanging next to WALL-E’s portrait. We are so grateful to Katie for this piece - I find myself looking at it and just smiling - cause how could you not when you see Hal pal dressed as a lil’ cockroach and cuddling a Twinkie - a favorite snack of Hal pal and Hal 🪳! I never would have guessed that seeing a Twinkie could bring me to tears… but here we are.

Happy Birthday to Hal’s dad @cool_phil !
A devoted senior pug dad - even though we only had two months with Hal - P made sure Hal experienced the world. P took Hal everywhere - even to work everyday. 💖

We are missing Hal pal big time today - so we made sure we honored him by taking a big walk at Fletcher Park this morning. 💖

Our sweetest Hal Pal’s energy returned to the universe on Wednesday night - 2 months to the day we decided to adopt this most perfect flatmate. 🪳

We knew when we adopted Hal that there was no promised time to us because of his terminal diagnosis (the reality of life is, none of it is a guarantee). So, we lived. We really LIVED. In two months time Hal pal traveled a lot - we went to DC and he enjoyed life on the wharf; we went to Richmond, VA and nomed on spaghetti and pizza; we ran on the beach for the first time on Emerald Isle; and we ate soft serve and got sand between our toes in Wilmington and Kure Beach. Between fun adventures we spent time introducing Hal to some of our favorite meals, taking long walks (Hal LOVED walking and sniffing), laying next to him on one of his 11 beds, or being fused side by side (he is forever a total mama’s boy).

We miss his soft gentle pug presence that was combined with total puppy play energy and a lil’ tough guy energy when he would see someone walking way in the distance.

We are so grateful to his care teams for their wisdom, love, and guidance during this hospice chapter: @northwoodsah (Hal’s primary care team); Dr. Kristi Crosier (Hal’s acupuncturist) ; and @ncstatevetmed (Hal’s specialists in Oncology and palliative care). Thank you for giving us two quality, happy and comfortable months with our Hal pal. We would not have had this time and true comfort without each of you.

Thank you to @pawsitivelypugs for rescuing Hal Pal from a life on the street and for knowing this special man deserved a life time of love in whatever time we could offer him.

And thank you to each and every one of you- Hal’s friends and community. You grew his world and enveloped him in pure love. He truly LIVED because of you!

Under the care of the incredible @ncstatevetmed OMEGA team (Dr. Kady Gjessing and Catherine McDonald) Hal was able to have a loving, beautiful, and comfortable death at home - while eating fried fish and twinkies. Honestly, we could not have given him a better return to the universe. ✨

Last weekend we had the joy of taking Hal to the beach for the very first time! Thank you for the beautiful weekend of wonder for Hal - running on the beach, playing in the water, having his first local coffee shop pup cup and lots of cheese and snacks @carly.alxandra & Corey! 💖

HAPPY 17th BIRTHDAY to our WALL-E BEAR!
This our first year celebrating WALL-E in his infinite form and we are deeply missing his physical presence here with us. Hal graduated from radiation treatment today! 🎈 The unparalleled medical team caring for Hal in Oncology / Radiation @ncstatevetmed sent him home with his certificate of graduation, loving little notes from the care team, a photo of Hal celebrating his last treatment (which we immediately framed!), and a toy snake they helped him pick out 🐍.

Show me a better veterinary hospital in the world… I’ll wait. We love you, @ncstatevetmed !

Hal had his first palliative radiation session @ncstatevetmed today! We are beyond grateful to the incredibly bright, generous, and caring medical team that is supporting Hal from radiation and oncology. And thank you to OMEGA transitional care services for helping us dream big and think creatively as to how to provide the greatest comfort during this season of palliative care / hospice care in Hal’s life. 🤍 Through OMEGA, all things are possible! 🙌

Today marks:
- 1 month since Hal scurried into our lives as our second foster through the wonderful @pawsitivelypugs 🪳
- 3 weeks since we adopted Hal 🎉

We can’t believe this very best flat mate has only been with us one month! We have already gone on a family vacation, began our culinary tasting journey up the east coast, and spent countless hours hopping like bunnies, running, and cuddling so closely you would think Hal is an appendage on his mom.

Hal’s gentle, peaceful, calming presence is such a staple in our daily lives already and his love of life and play (at any age) is a daily reminder to us to never stop being curious and playful.

Happy one month of being together, to our Hal Pal! 🪳 💖

We took our first family vacation with Hal to DC this weekend to celebrate Hal’s 13th birthday (and see Jack White)! Shout out to @intercontinentaldcwharf for a beautiful stay! Hal LOVED looking out our window and watching the people and boats on the Wharf, below. Hal enjoyed lots of sniff walks, French fries, (his first!) pup cup, all the cuddles, naps, World Cup matches, and a birthday Twinkie! 🎂🪳
