Introducing Joanna:

“During my time as a resident in Tsarino I began to talk with the turtles.
I was drawn to the abundance of materials and the dialogue between man made interventions and nature.
Carving stone, stacking bricks and working with wood and fabric to create installations that are site specific to Tsarino.
My work began to create parallels between geological process and artistic gesture. Emboding my own artist transformation and renewal.
Ultimately I think my turtle friends approved.”

“По време на престоя си като артист в Царино започнах да разговарям с костенурките.
Бях привлечена от изобилието на материали и от диалога между човешките намеси и природата.
Работих с камък, редях тухли и работих с дърво и плат, за да създам инсталации, специфични за Царино.
Постепенно работата ми започна да изгражда паралели между геоложките процеси и художествения жест, въплъщавайки собствената ми трансформация и обновление като артист.
В крайна сметка мисля, че приятелите ми костенурки одобриха резултата.”

BIC Cristal (2025) - snippets from new work shown at Somerset house as part of exhibition with @kitmapper - ‘Along More Latent Lines’

Taking simple bic pen sketches these were then transposed over and over and scanned, altered and collaged to create new images. Getting further away from there original start point. These images were then printed onto acetate and reduced to created 80 small frames for an analogue slide projector. The pacing of the projector creating a strange animation. By leaving all printing marker and errors new layers, textures and dimensions opened up within the drawings. Pushing the analogue/ digital tangabitly.

This is several videos stitched together. Working on the documentation of the full thing. by @woannaj

Collection of all my little trumpet devil men scattered across the village. Or at least the ones we could find.

I have everyone on residency alittle devil man to hide in the village and turned it into a game of how many can we find throughout the exhibition weekend - most were never recovered.

Very beaten up originals at the end. by @woannaj

‘The Road to Чорбаджийско‘ (2026)

Ceramic turtle shells
Wild clay and charcoal
Fired in fire pit as part of final presentation
3 were made in total all slightly different with different charcoal markings mirroring real turtle markings.

After bonding with the turtles living in an around the village this felt like something my body of work was missing.

Wild clay was found, processed and fired by @cdeschamps_prince who really guided how to make these successfully by @woannaj

‘The Road to Чорбаджийско‘ (2026)

Basalt volcanic stone (with channels of iron through the surface) carved with 6 pagan horn playing figures found in Plovdiv. Wedged up with off cuts from chiselling - coated with mineral oil
Stone found on road side

This one felt like old school real sculpture - I love the makers marks from the angle grinder. Also shown in the Stone Room.

Little swipe swipe for the stone pre work with Clovis unprocessed clay (also found on the road side) by @woannaj
