1.75 HP cabinet saw or bite the bullet and go 3 HP?
A viewer moving up from a 1.75 HP contractor saw asked. Marc's answer: bite the bullet. Three horsepower lets you leave thin kerf blades behind and run full kerf, and it is more than enough for just about any hobby or small pro shop. Plus the cabinet format gets you a better fence, more work surface and a better build overall.
What horsepower is your table saw?

Hand tools or power tools first?
Melvyn is starting woodworking at 60 and asked where to begin. Marc wrote the book on Hybrid Woodworking, so you can guess his answer: power tools for the grunt work, hand tools for the finesse and fine tuning. You don't need a giant wall of hand tools, just a few specific ones. All power tools or all hand tools? He can't knock either one. But if you want his opinion, go hybrid. Signed copies of the book are at twwstore.com.
Which side are you on?

$1,200 for a tuned set of vintage Stanley Bedrocks, or put the money toward Lie-Nielsen?
@OTL357 asked. Marc's take: restoring vintage planes is a skill, and you can really mess them up if you don't know what you're doing. If you can't take a few test passes, you don't know what you're getting. If you just want functional tools, pick three or four Lie-Nielsen planes. They're perfect out of the box and backed by a company that will help you. Go vintage if you love the look and feel. Then Nicole asks if she can use them to open paint cans.

Hard wax oils go deeper than you think.
Marc was stripping a cherry top that had a hard wax oil finish. Scraping took forever, and he could still see light and dark patches where the finish was embedded in the wood. Only his smoothing plane got him down to truly bare wood. Lesson learned: hard wax oil bonds to the wood fibers. It is not just a surface treatment. If you ever want it off completely, plan on cutting, not just sanding.
Have you ever tried to fully remove a hard wax oil finish?

"But why do you need a hole?"
Nicole asked Marc the drill press question every woodworker has been asked at least once. After a few rounds of "because I need a hole," he gets to the real answer: the drill press brings the wood to the tool. You get stability, clamping, a work surface and a perfect 90 degree hole every time. With a hand drill, it all comes down to how straight you can hold it.
Who in your life asks you questions like this? Tag them.

The internet is funny.
Marc posted his maker space video and at least five or six people commented on the same thing: he flipped the light switch DOWN to turn the lights on. They know enough about electrical work to know there is a "correct" way up... but not enough to realize a building this size might have a three way switch. It is all good engagement.
What is the weirdest thing anyone has ever commented on in your shop?

Dusty shop setting off your smoke alarm? Look at a flame detector.

Kyle followed up on a listener whose smoke alarm kept tripping on dust. A flame detector watches for visible flame instead of smoke, so dust does not fool it. It will not catch smoldering on its own, which is why it goes alongside smoke and heat detection, not instead of it. Think oily rags.

What fire safety do you have in your shop?

The cheap upgrade that makes storage totes slide like butter.

Dave asked about skinning tote runners with HDPE. Marc painted his and the paint will just scrape off, so this is going on his too. Low friction, adhesive backed tape, about a 1 inch roll, run it along the top of each rail. Protects the wear edge and the bins glide. Also, HDPE apparently stands for "hoopy doopy poopy E." According to Nicole.

Festool TS 55 or TS 60?

Todd is finally buying a track saw. If most of what you cut is 3/4 inch plywood, the TS 55 is totally fine. If you plan on ripping 8/4 hardwood, the extra power is worth it, and the early TS 55s did struggle in thick walnut. Marc's rule: you are already spending real money, so spend a little more and get the one that will not hold you back.

Which track saw do you run?

Two table saws, one shop. Here is how they get connected.

Gary asked if a table goes between the saws. Not a table, a bridge: about a 12 inch section of the old outfeed table. Enough room for miter gauges and outfeed support. The trade off is honest: any outfeed cut means the other saw's blade and fence have to be down. The gap stays open for dust collection and sled storage.

Would you run two saws or sell one? Comments are open.

Lost your woodworking mojo? Maybe just take a break.

John asked how to get out of a woodworking slump. Marc's take: unless this is your job, who cares if you step away for a while. Woodworking is not the gym. You should not have to drag yourself into the shop. It is supposed to be for fun, and if it is not fun right now, that is a sign, not a failure. It will be there when you come back.

Have you ever taken a long break from the shop? Tell us in the comments.

Shop burnout is usually a list problem, not a motivation problem.
GC Drummer asked how to deal with burnout. Marc's answer: cut the number of active projects, write everything down, put it in priority order so your brain only has to hold one thing. The looming pile is the thing burning you out, not the work.
