Experimenting with a new canvas in the studio. So far I have learned, burlap bags tear easily when tufting 🙃
However, going slower really helps this issue and the result looks just like it was tufted on a regular canvas!

Trying to incorporate resourcefulness in different aspects of tufting and fibre art. Really enjoying this process and canvas! by @woollyak

This project has taken a minute, but I’ve enjoyed every second of making it. Love exploring tufting beyond rug making and this was the perfect project. I have also been loving leopard print recently, so wanted to make it more tactile 🐆💗💁🏽‍♀️

This is the first prototype (which has turned out amazing!) I will have 3 bags dropping on my website soon! Made with reused seatbelts :)

A small post dedicated to my Freeform crochet art because I don’t think I’ve ever made a post about it!

I first started Freeform crochet as a way to learn to crochet by following shapes rather than a written pattern (which I struggled to learn through 🫣)

All of these pieces are made using scrap yarn from old projects, which made me realise how you can still create cool projects with scraps! I was initially drawn to creating abstract faces that reflect the layered complexities of identity. I used bold, bright colours to have fun and experiment with shapes and creating expressions.

The third slide is actually a self-portrait (kind of) with the scar running from the nose to mouth representing my cleft lip and palate. I used a lot of earthy colours to reflect my quiet nature.

If you take away anything from this post, it is to not sleep on your scrap materials!! Experiment, play and see what happens!

I am currently working on some new Freeform techniques to try something a bit different to my abstract protraits :) by @woollyak

Summer is usually quite quiet, so I took the time to invest in my own creativity and work on some new ideas that are currently living in a mind map!

I had so much fun taking my workshops to gallery spaces, private bookings, making new connections as well as my usually workshops at Hamilton House!

Get in touch if you would like to work together or book a private workshop :)

Spent time getting back into old hobbies. I actually used to climb all the time. Getting back into it after years is quite humbling but so fun!

I must admit this project has been a lot slower than I anticipated, but I have really enjoyed the process of making this. I am learning new techniques and really experimenting with how tufting can be used beyond just rugs.

This current project is actually a leopard print bag! I have been loving animal print, so I thought it would be cool to make it tactile.

Trying out new crafts at home for pure enjoyment! I love trying new things, even if I am not necessarily good at them. Pottery is actually something I’ve tried a few times and find incredibly hard! Huge respect for ceramicists out there.

Making art out of enjoyment is so important. It really does not have to be anything impressive to reap all the benefits and just enjoy making.

Sharing my own makes has been something I’m trying to get better at! I have rugs/wall hanging available on my website.

I am also super excited by the idea of doing a rug trade! If you are a maker, creative or offer services that you would like to swap then let’s chat. I am very open to this. DM or email me :) by @woollyak

Join us for a FREE crochet workshop, and walk away with your first granny square at 10,000 HOURS! All skill levels welcome!

Maya Woollyak (@woollyak) is on a mission to make fibre art more accessible through material and skill sharing. She says crochet offers a resistance to fast-fashion trends by encouraging us to embrace a slower and more intentional process of making. Her practice is rooted in ditching the rules and working intuitively with scrap materials, creating contemporary pieces that explore how resourcefulness and experimentation can challenge ideas around value and consumption.

➡️ She will walk you through the basics, starting with the simple double crochet stitch, then using those skills to make your first granny square. It’s a foundational skill in crochet and opens the door to endless future projects, not just a one-off. Choose from different colours and textures to make your own granny square to display on the night, or expand upon for your first project.

✨ What to expect ✨
* Learn a basic crochet stitch
* Create your first granny square using different materials
* Encouragement to experiement with different colours and textures
* Friendly, drop-in format - no experience necessary

Want to make your own rug?

This design was submitted as a small drawing on a piece of paper and it really came to life at the workshop! Your ideas are always encouraged at these workshops. If you’re stuck on a design, I also have a list of designs you can choose from.

Also this design really matches the artwork by @amberbardell at Hamilton House 💫

I love bringing ideas to life, and I’ve got some new designs in the works that I can’t wait to share with you all 🤗

P.s. the cardigan is a new pattern I have designed :) by @woollyak
