The final WooP Salon ended on a high with a conversation on everyone’s new favourite word FEMMAGE with V&A Parasol Foundation Curator Fiona Rogers talking about her new book Cut Out - A Feminist History of Photo Collage Montage and Assemblage (@thamesandhudson) with artists in the book Dafna Talmor @dafnatalmor and Ami Bouhassane, Director of her grandmother Lee Miller’s Archives. From cutting up negatives (Dafna) to making collage on the bathroom floor (Lee) it was a fascinating insight to what Fiona’s research has brought together from the V&A collection (apart from that one Lee Miller collage!) Also present in the audience was Joy Gregory @joy_gregory_studio whose work is featured in the book. A great way to end the salons and thanks to our speakers, @waawworld and @masonfifth for hosting and all who came along. WooP! 💫

@vamparasolwomenphoto @firecracker_foto @dafnatalmor @leemillerarchives

Female artists have long employed collage to reflect the ways in which identity is often constructed from conflicting contrasting and contradictory parts. Cut Out explores the relationship between photography and feminist collage foregrounding the use of femmage – a radical reclaiming of craft traditionally associated with women – as a resilient method within feminist and political art.
Fiona Rogers is Parasol Foundation Curator of Women in Photography at the V&A, which collects and promotes women artists working in photography for the museum.
Dafna Talmor is a London-based artist and lecturer whose practice encompasses photography, sculpture, spatial interventions and collaborations.
Ami Bouhassane is co-Director of Lee Miller Archives, which represents the work of her grandmother Lee Miller, the legendary and groundbreaking photographer, Surrealist, war correspondent, model & gourmet cook. by @woopnotgoop

Thank you to Hannah Starkey @maureenpaley and @brandei_estes for a wonderful conversation for the WooP salon last Friday eve on working in the art world and in particular focussing on Hannah and Maureen’s ongoing relationship of over three decades as artist and gallerist. Inspiring and insightful thank you to all three for being so generous 💫

Hannah Starkey is one of the foremost artists and photographers working in the UK today. Her large-scale photographs engage with how women are represented in contemporary culture. Her portraits capture moments of everyday life and an expanded female experience. Starkey reveals women in moments of private reflection or social interaction that might otherwise go unseen the large scale of her images offering monumentality to these instances. Her work was recently a major solo exhibition at the Hepworth Wakefield, and on display in two group Hayward Gallery Touring exhibitions, Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood and After the End of History: British Working Class Photography 1989 – 2024, as well as the South London Gallery exhibition Acts of Resistance: Photography, Feminisms and the Art of Protest organised in collaboration with the V&A, London.

Maureen Paley is one of the most respected and long-running commercial galleries in the UK, and was one of the first galleries to present contemporary art in London’s East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene representing a diverse range of international artists. She has worked with Hannah since she graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1997 and gave Hannah her first solo show in 1998. They have had 8 solo shows since, with Maureen working closely with Hannah, supporting and representing her in the art world for nearly three decades.

Brandei Estes is currently acting Senior Curator of Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery, London, who was previously Director of Photographs at Sotheby’s.

@masonfifth

Thank you to Heather Agyepong, Magda Kuca, Gabrielle Motola, sarah Pickering, Sara Sahores for talking about your incredible work!

Following her new publication, renowned writer and curator Hettie Judah @hettiejudah will led a workshop as part of her After Sessions series, designed to debunk the art world and give practical and supportive insight into how it all works. Can you make it without going to art school? Can you get back into the art world after years away? What does 'success' actually mean? How to Enter the Art World...

@hoxtonminipress is a grownup guide for any artist or creative whose life is complicated, demanding and well, human. Informed by years spent working with artists and with dozens of candid but anonymous interviews with art world insiders (naming no names!), it is a myth-busting bonanza full of insights, ideas and inspiration.

Thank you @woopnotgoop for bringing together such a thoughtful and inspiring conversation with @amak_mahmoodian and @omfgnoway.

It was a privilege to hear from Amak Mahmoodian, the award-winning Iranian multidisciplinary artist whose work explores memory, migration, identity, and belonging. Based in the UK since 2007, Amak's work has been exhibited internationally and is held in major collections including the Tate Modern and Victoria and Albert Museum. Her exhibition One Hundred and Twenty Minutes at 17 Midland Road was recently shortlisted for the 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize.
The discussion was expertly led by Charlotte Jansen, acclaimed arts journalist, photography critic for The Guardian, author of Girl on Girl and Photography Now, and curator of Discovery at Photo London.
An evening of insightful dialogue on photography, storytelling, and the power of images to bridge personal and collective histories.

A huge thank you to curator Lydia Caston for beautifully leading the WooP group on a busy Friday evening around the amazing Schiaparelli: Fashion Becomes Art exhibition at the V&A last week. If you haven’t seen it GO you are in for a treat as Elsa Schiaparelli not only dressed a whole host of incredible women but is a hugely inspiring figure herself. Also recommended is her autobiography Shocking Life before/during/after the tour. A great story of a female entrepreneur and self-taught fashion designer. And although it’s a fashion show there is a lot of art and photography across the exhibition including works by Dora Maar, Eileen Agar, Meret Oppenheim, Leonor Fini, Gluck and Lee Miller. On until November 2026!

Please join us for breakfast to kick off the WooP x WAAW Salon with journalist, curator and critic Charlotte Jansen @omfgnoway and artist Amak Mahmoodian @amak_mahmoodian , who will discuss the violence of photography and representation surrounding stories of immigration and exile, in relation to Mahmoodian’s practice, and in particular her six-year project 120 Minutes, shortlisted for the 2026 Deutsche Börse Photography Prize.

WAAW with us @masonfifth
4-10th of June!

Mason & Fifth x WAAW World 2026
4 - 10 June | London
At the heart of this year’s London programme, WAAW World takes over Mason & Fifth in Westbourne Park, transforming the space into a vibrant hub for cultural exchange. Through the first addition of WAAW-curated exhibition and immersive public programme, the venue becomes a living,breathing creative environment. Across the week, visitors can experience artist talks, spoken word, poetry, performances, DJ acts and hands-on art masterclasses open to all. Inviting both residents and the wider community to participate, the programme brings art beyond traditional gallery settings and into everyday life. This collaboration reflects a shared vision of urban living shaped by arts and culture creating a space where people can live, create, learn, and connect through a shared artistic energy. Our collaboration with @woopnotgoop hosts outstanding leaders of the art world HANNAH STARKEY, MAUREEN PALEY, BRANDEI ESTES, AMAK MAHMOODIAN, CHARLOTTE JANSEN, HETTIE JUDAH, FIONA ROGERS, AMI BOUHASSANE and DAFNA TALMOR!

The Conservatory at Mason & Fifth will be transformed into an immersive, interactive exhibition space curated by Annya Sand and Alena Peschek. Titled Circle, the exhibition celebrates a powerful network of female artists who have continuously championed, inspired, and uplifted one another throughout their creative journeys. Drawing on the symbolism of the circle - unity, wholeness, protection, and continuity - the show explores the strength of collaboration and the enduring impact of community. Without a beginning or hierarchy, the circle becomes a metaphor for shared creative energy, mutual respect, and collective empowerment over competition. Through Circle, WAAW World aims to foster solidarity while echoing the long-standing tradition of women gathering to exchange knowledge, stories, and artistic expression within a safe and inclusive space. Featured artists include Dyana Gravina, Jo Guile, Alena Peschek, Tyreis Holder, Lydia Smith, and Daniella Celine Williams! taken in Westbourne Park by @woopnotgoop
