As the Flock Safety CEO meets with Dallas Police Chief Daniel C. Comeaux to discuss ALPR safeguards, Dallas community organizations are calling for accountability and enforceable protections around the city’s use of Flock license plate readers.

Wilber Garcés Pérez was working. Delivering food in Austin to make a living. On September 20, an ICE agent shot him.
He is 28. He is from Venezuela. Today he sits in ICE detention with a bullet still lodged near his spine, facing deportation.
Last week FIRM, Texas immigrant rights organizations, and coalition partners from across the country stood together to demand justice for Wilber:
✊🏽 Free Wilber now. Release him, stop his deportation, and get him medical care. ✊🏽 An independent investigation led by Travis County DA José Garza. ICE cannot investigate its own shooting. ✊🏽 ICE out of Austin. End local police collusion with immigration agents. ✊🏽 Abolish ICE. Claw back the $240 billion for mass deportation and reinvest it in our communities.

Wilber Perez was shot in the back by ICE. Instead of immediate medical care, ICE locked him in a cage. He remains with a bullet lodged in his back.

This is the reality of the police state in Austin and Texas: where the survival of a human being is secondary to the mass deportation machine.

WE DEMAND:

- Wilber's immediate release from ICE custody

- For his medical needs to be met

- His participation in the investigation

- An independent, local investigation by the Travis County District Attorney

- To get ICE Out of Austin, including ending 287(g) agreements, for DPS to cease all traffic stops with or for ICE, and for the Travis County Sheriff to enter the least harmful 287(g) agreement - the Warrant Service Officer model.

- The abolition of ICE, take back $240M from the mass deportation agenda, and reinvest those dollars in our communities.

Last night the community met for an intimate conversation on Flock with the Dallas Chair on Public Safety, Councilwoman @gaydonnellwillis , @maplesjonathan from the Community Police Oversight Board, and Dr. Phillips @drmphillips1960 , professor of American History at SMU and board member for @humanrightsdallas.

We want to commend our panelists on their courage and willingness to have this raw and complex conversation. Their genuine and thorough answers informed our community and motivated everyone to become more engaged.

Here are some notable quotes from our panelists we wanted to share:

Dr Phillips left us with this quote from Benjamin Franklin, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Jonathan Maples reminded us, “We are the Community Police Oversight Board. We are here for the community.” He encouraged everyone to attend the CPOB meetings held monthly on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m. There will be a representative from Flock at the next meeting.

Councilwoman Willis encouraged everyone to, “Speak to your city council member, engage them, educate yourself on the issue, and use your voice!”
