UPDATE: Carney is now committing to meet NATO’s wildly absurd 5% military spending benchmark, more than doubling Canada’s military budget. Which makes everything we said below even more horrifically true.

On June 9, Carney made an appalling announcement. By committing to massively increase Canada’s military budget, adding $9+ billion overnight, he is giving an enormous gift to Trump, the weapons industry, and the whole military industrial complex. Millions will suffer and countless lives will be lost as a result of this announcement.

This is a promise of a war-filled future.

Just as building pipelines entrenches a future of oil extraction and climate crisis, the decision to ramp up Canada’s military budget, escalate a global arms race, and purchase new warships, fighter jets, and space missiles entrenches a commitment to wage war via these weapons systems for decades to come.

This is a promise of devastating austerity.

Carney is robbing the country of the resources needed to address the actual security threats facing people across Canada - climate change and ecological collapse, disease epidemics and public health emergencies, and poverty coupled with the ballooning costs of housing and food.

Spending hundreds of billions of dollars on outrageous, aggressive, and wildly overpriced weapons systems like the Golden Dome is a slap in the face to everyone in Canada struggling to get by or to imagine a life for their children in a country that sets new wildfire records nearly every year.

If ever there was a time to separate the genuine threats to our security from the self-interested goals of Trump and the weapons industry, this is it.

Instead of a foreign policy based on ever-increasing militarization and warmongering in lockstep with the US, we must develop one based on diplomacy and peace building.

We’ve got our work cut out for us.

It’s time to build our power and cross-movement resistance to stop those who will use the anxiety of this political moment to drum up public support for the arms industry and military spending. It’s time to forge an international solidarity that stands with all people facing war and military violence. Let’s get to it. by @worldbeyondwarcanada

After 3 years of genocide, Gaza has been deliberately destroyed erasing most signs of life. This level of destruction can only be made possible through the systematic development of weapons by "Israel's" largest weapons manufacturer, Elbit Systems, a company which markets its weapons as battle tested. by @worldbeyondwarcanada

🚨LAST CALL TO REGISTER🚨 Online course: War and the Environment

Anti-war and climate movements are both fighting for justice and life for all people on a livable planet. No climate justice, no peace, no planet.

A just transition requires not only a shift from fossil fuels to renewables, but also demilitarization. We must simultaneously address the outrageous carbon emissions of Canada’s military, the devastating extraction of materials for war machines, and the horrific destruction of human life and ecological systems caused by the past few decades of Canada’s war initiatives and complicity in genocides.

We must both witness and organize to resist the militarized violence that continues colonization across Canada and particularly the ways that those taking a stand at the climate frontlines, especially Indigenous peoples, are regularly attacked and surveilled by the Canadian military and militarized policing.

Peace, justice and climate issues are inextricably linked.

@WorldBeyondWar’s six-week online War and the Environment course digs into these connections and what people and movements can do about them.

Each week is supported by a different facilitator, bringing perspectives and experience from Thailand, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Argentina, the United States, and Canada, and expertise across peacebuilding, environmental harm, military pollution, climate and emissions, human rights, peace education, and activism. Together, we’ll share an international learning space in which participants can connect the course material with different contexts and with one another.

The course includes:
📚 6 weekly online modules which you can work through flexibly in your own time
💬 3 optional live Zoom sessions for discussion and exchange
📽️ A special live Q&A with filmmaker and journalist Abby Martin around Earth’s Greatest Enemy
👥 Learning alongside facilitators and participants from around the world
⏱️ Approximately 3–6 hours of flexible participation per week
🎓 A Certificate of Completion for participants who complete the weekly assignments

CEIP’s aim can be stated simply: we demand that the City of Toronto end all business dealings with corporations that are linked to severe human rights abuses, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, illegal military occupation, mass surveillance and mass incarceration. Ending the City’s business dealings means no more investments of public funds, and no more purchases of goods and services from human rights abusers.
