I’ve been waking up for a week now with my legs still spinning, worried I’m behind schedule and I’ll have to ascend some unnamed summit in the dark. It takes a few minutes for a half-awake @erin_poland to remind me that it’s over, I’ve finished the @silkroadmountainrace, and I can rest.

Time softens the edges of the memories, making the mountains into marmot hills and the trials into trivialities, but I can still taste that distinctive mixture of dust and unfiltered exhaust on my tongue. I can still feel the warmth of the Kyrgyz families that so graciously welcomed me into their homes, a warmth only matched by the yurt stoves and that one broken shower at CP3. I can still see the uncountable stars, occasionally punctuated by a shooting star or flash of lighting from a (hopefully) far off storm. It’s all so far away now, but all it takes is one bump in the road and I’m back on the endless washboards on the way to Torugart, running low on energy and Snickers.

An enormous thank you to @nelsontrees and the entire team of volunteers for putting on the most incredible cycling event I’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of, and to @nils_laengner and team for capturing us at our highest and lowest, both literally and figuratively. (Editors note: there’s an entire thank you post for friends and family coming, so don’t think I forgot about you.)

I came to meet the mountains, and I am returning with lifelong friends, a little nerve damage, and enough memories to get me through to the next adventure.

People will warn you that life is about compromise. It’s important that you ignore them, because if you get really lucky, you just might meet someone that is everything you thought you’d have to decide between and then some.

I met Erin 10 years ago last week, and there hasn’t been a single day in the last decade that I’ve felt like I had to compromise. If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting her, you know she jumps into everything head first, and has a way of convincing you to jump in after her. We start our next race in a week, and I’m so lucky that I get to share this special journey with her.

Happy birthday Erin, can’t wait to spend the next couple weeks falling in love with you all over again. by @worstknowntime

My only regret is that I can only die once, for I have many hills upon which I wish to die.
