Spotlighting our 2026 Research Grantee: Jackie Hoysted, a multimedia artist whose interdisciplinary practice explores urgent sociopolitical themes through the lens of ecological interconnectedness.

Hoysted’s research explores how art and science can work together to help us better understand fungi. Using DNA imagery and immersive art, she’s looking at how fungal networks store information, communicate, and make decisions. While at the same time, respecting Irish animistic traditions that view fungi and soil as living, aware beings.

By connecting this traditional ecological knowledge with modern mycology, the project asks whether new scientific tools can support and affirm older ways of knowing nature, rather than replacing them. At its heart, the research invites us to see fungi not as resources to be used, but as living partners with their own agency—encouraging relationships based on respect, kinship, and mutual care instead of extraction.

Spotlighting our 2026 Research Grantee: Adriana Monsalve, an artist, educator, cultural worker and collaborative publisher working (mostly) in the photobook medium. Along with Caterina Ragg, Adriana is co-founder of @homiehousepress, a radical cooperative platform that challenges the ever-changing forms of storytelling with image and text.

Adriana's research project, “Magdalena / Mississippi,” uses revisionist history to explore colonized land and waterways elusive to Black and Brown bodies through the displacement of mixed diasporas. This work requires an investigative collaboration and deep connection with the dead, in a playful and irreverent fable that calls legends to life and ghosts to play.

Through this research, Adriana is grappling with what it means to collaborate with the dead through her grandfather’s unpublished stories, whose notebooks of writings were found after his death. To excavate these legacies, she begins by tracing the rivers of her ancestry, from the Mississippi Delta to the Rio Magdalena in Colombia. Both waterways have deep ties to musical traditions including the Blues and Cumbia. Adriana’s lineage holds the embodiment of two worlds, elusive but embedded in her... two rivers, one sound and diaspora, misplaced on tethered land, in a body between land and sea.

Last week we celebrated the closing of “One Stroke at a Time” by organizing artists Lorenzo Holder (@lorenzo_holder) and Dr. Vicenzio Holder-Perkins (@vicenziomd), at WPA’s Dupont Circle project space!

“One Stroke at a Time” marked the first public presentation of their collaborative work as nephew and uncle–an artist and a psychiatrist–building a shared language grounded in care.

Their collaboration began through art therapy after Dr. Perkins’ stroke in 2018. As he sketched during recovery, Holder responded through color and composition, creating an evolving exchange rooted in experimentation and mutual support. by @wpadc

Spotlighting our 2026 Project Grantee: Shariq Shah who is a food cartographer and visual artist exploring how intergenerational memory is passed down through shared practices and spaces of cooking. Tracing oral recipes, family cookbooks, voicemails, and voicenotes, he explores how memory persists through food across conditions of displacement, removal, and migration.

His project, titled “Cooking Memory,” organizes a series of recipe archiving workshops and collective meals focused on documenting recipes, techniques, and generational memories from across South and Southwest Asia.

For their first event, they organized and produced an interfaith community iftar exploring Palestine through food, migration, and cultural exchange. Generously hosted at the Palestine House of Freedom, the event brought together 60+ attendees, local restaurant partners, and community organizations, raising funds for grassroots food-relief efforts in Gaza and the West Bank while fostering dialogue around memory, identity, and solidarity through shared culinary traditions. More recently, small-scale dinners and workshops have explored individual family recipes, doing the work of transcription, archiving, and oral documentation.

These gatherings have evolved into an interdisciplinary arts collective, called Spoon Studio. Examining food as an archive, it explores how memories of home are sustained through shared acts of cooking. They are currently seeking contributions to their Recipe Archive! Recipes are accepted in the form of videos, voicenotes, voicemails, handwritten notes, scans of family cookbooks, and even screenshots from your Notes app. DM your recipe at @spoonstudiodc !

Join us on this Saturday (06/20) from 3–5PM for the closing celebration of “One Stroke at a Time” by organizing artists Lorenzo Holder (@lorenzo_holder) and Dr. Vicenzio Holder-Perkins (@vicenziomd), at WPA’s Dupont Circle project space (1350 Connecticut Ave NW)!

On view during the exhibition’s final week is a new collaborative installation created through our indigo watercolor workshop with ArtEnables (@artenables). Participants worked in pairs, responding to one another’s marks before transforming their paintings into masks that now form a collective collage.

Centered on indigo, a pigment tied to healing, spirituality, labor, and survival across the African diaspora, the installation reflects on a material that traveled through the Caribbean under plantation economies while carrying knowledge, memory, and cultural practices across generations. What began as individual gestures became a shared work shaped through exchange, trust, and transformation.

ACCESS NOTES:

This is a fully in-person event. We strive to welcome visitors of all abilities and are committed to transparency about gallery access. Please note that the ramp leading into the exhibition space does not meet current ADA slope standards and may be difficult or unsafe to navigate independently for some visitors using wheelchairs, mobility devices, or those who require a gentler incline.

If you require further accommodation during your visit, please email sblair@wpadc.org as far in advance as possible. Accommodations will be provided to the best of our capacities.

Last Friday, WPA participated in First Friday: ArtWalk in Dupont Circle!

Organizing artists Lorenzo Holder (@lorenzo_holder) and Dr. Vicenzio Holder-Perkins (@vicenziomd), presented STROKE, an evening of performance, sound, and embodied experimentation.

Emerging from “One Stroke at a Time,” STROKE brought together artists working across sound, voice, movement, and live performance to explore interruption, adaptation, and the body’s capacity to relearn expression.

Dupont Circle BID First Friday: ArtWalk takes place on the first Friday of each month from 6–8PM. WPA aims to be a continuous participant of ArtWalk, and it is a pleasure to be a part of Dupont Circle’s growing art scene!

The first Friday of every month WPA will hold extended gallery hours from 12–8 pm during public exhibitions.
