Public Art | Lisa Waup ‘embedded memory’, Bell St Station, Preston

Conceived by mixed cultural First Nations artist Lisa Waup, who was born in Preston and raised in Naarm/Melbourne, ‘embedded memory’ is positioned between the northern entrance of Bell Station and Bell Street itself. The form is crafted to interact subtly with light and shadow, inviting commuters to pause, observe, and connect with the layers of Country. WRAP worked closely with @lisa.waup to deliver this new work as part of @levelcrossings removal project.

‘The line work, reminiscent of hand prints, represents the lines etched into our palms – a testament to our identity. Within these lines, the memory of the landscape resides — the rivers that have shaped this place. These rivers, like threads, have woven the fabric of community, connecting paths and generations.’

Now installed | Makiko Ryujin, ‘Inner Garden’ 🖤

Drawing on Richmond’s industrial past and the rhythms of the natural world, ‘Inner Garden’ by Naarm/Melbourne artist Makiko Ryujin transforms the lobby of 11 Stewart Street. Hand turned cypress forms, blowtorched and sealed by the artist invite moments of pause within the everyday.

Curated and installed by WRAP for a project designed by Cera Stribley.

A pleasure to collaborate with Makiko and everyone involved in bringing this work to life!

Art Collections & Curation | Troy Emery, ‘Cobalt Green’, Rock House.

There is something distinctly animate beneath the fringed surfaces of Troy Emery’s figures. Their forms feel taut and alert, as if they could pounce, prowl, or simply turn to watch you leave the room.

Revisiting ‘Sky scribble (a seed for growing a cloud)’ by Naarm/Melbourne artist Meagan Streader at Fitzroy & Co.

When curating residential collections, we’re always thinking about moments of encounter. The experience of stepping out of a lift, turning a corner, or moving through a space and unexpectedly finding yourself face-to-face with a work that captures your attention.

Installed at the entrance to the Communal Lounge, Streader’s luminous work draws residents into the space, transforming a transitional area into a dynamic focal point.

Don’t miss her solo show ‘A Residual Pulse’ currently on view at @substation until 22 Aug.

A new artwork by mixed-cultural First Nations artist Lisa Waup now transforms the hoarding surrounding University Square, marking the beginning of a multi-stage public artwork that will unfold across the site over the coming years.

Visible at the heart of the precinct, this large-scale installation offers a powerful glimpse into a broader vision for the place. While works continue behind the scenes, the hoarding stands as both a celebration of Country and an invitation to consider the deep histories, stories and connections that have shaped this site.

Drawing on her distinctive monochromatic visual language, Waup’s work is characterised by intricate black and white linework, rhythmic mark-making and layered symbolism. Throughout her practice, these visual elements speak to pathways, movement, gathering, connection and the enduring relationships between people and Country. Here, the artwork reflects the networks of knowledge, stories and cultural connections that have existed across this landscape for millennia.
