Today, WRCNM staff are wearing purple in recognition of Domestic Abuse Awareness Month—to honor survivors, remember victims, and raise awareness about domestic abuse.

Wearing purple is a visible reminder that survivors deserve to be 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐝. It also represents our shared commitment to building a community where everyone can feel safe and supported.

Preventing domestic abuse takes all of us. We can make a difference by learning to recognize the signs of abuse, knowing how to safely support someone who may be experiencing it, strengthening local resources, and starting conversations that help break the silence surrounding abuse.

This holiday season, Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Petoskey is helping spread hope and kindness through a beautiful, one-of-a-kind Christmas tree dress, thoughtfully created by 𝐑𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢 in support of WRCNM's 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 campaign. 

Adorned with purple ribbon, symbolizing hope, courage, and support for survivors of domestic abuse, this special display is a meaningful reminder of the difference our community can make. 

💜 𝐇𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 helps survivors staying at WRCNM's Safe Home celebrate the season with their families. Through donations of gift cards and financial contributions, parents have the opportunity to choose meaningful gifts for their children, creating special moments and memories during the holidays.

We all have a role to play. Today is an opportunity to recognize the rich cultures, traditions, languages, histories, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, while honoring their resilience and enduring presence in our communities.

Here in Northern Michigan, we live and work on the ancestral and present-day homelands of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (LTBB), whose culture, language, leadership, and traditions continue to enrich and shape our region.

We also recognize the lasting impacts of colonization and the injustices experienced by Indigenous peoples across generations. Honoring this history means acknowledging both the harm that has occurred and the strength, wisdom, and resilience of Indigenous communities today.

Mental health is an important part of our overall well-being, and everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard.

For survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence, the effects of trauma can extend far beyond the experience itself, impacting emotional well-being, relationships, and everyday life. Healing looks different for everyone, and there is no single timeline or path forward.

For survivors of domestic abuse, leaving home often means leaving behind nearly everything. Having access to warm meals, a stocked refrigerator, and food for their children can provide much-needed comfort and stability during an incredibly difficult time.

WRCNM's Safe Home provides 24-hour emergency shelter for survivors and their children across five Northern Michigan counties. 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 𝟏,𝟓𝟖𝟗 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫.

While we are grateful for the generosity of our community, food donations cannot always meet every need. Recent state and federal funding cuts have also eliminated grant funding that previously helped cover food expenses for Safe Home residents.

💙 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭 & 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲

Several WRCNM staff members recently had the opportunity to attend the 2026 Kiersten’s Ride Suicide Prevention Conference, a three-day, in-person training focused on strengthening suicide prevention and intervention efforts.

Throughout the conference, attendees learned about intervention strategies and therapeutic approaches designed to better support individuals who may be experiencing thoughts of suicide.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this that help our staff continue building their knowledge and skills to compassionately support those in our community.

The 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐥 outlines behaviors and tactics that are commonly used by an abusive partner to gain power and control, including domination, isolation, and manipulation. While relationships may not begin as abusive, patterns of abuse can develop and escalate over time.

This morning, 𝐌𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐊𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐖𝐑𝐂𝐍𝐌 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐜𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐞 𝐉𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐬, 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫, had the opportunity to speak with the @petoskeyrotarysunrise about human trafficking.

Their presentation covered the basics of human trafficking, relevant statistics, and steps community members can take to increase awareness and help make a difference.
