Loss is so complex. Two years feels like two minutes, and a lifetime. Yesterday felt heavy, because my dad’s life had a lot of sadness and missed potential.

But then my mother shared that the night my parents met, my grandmother said “I need to warn you, he’s very whimsical.” @rachelsul24_ had decided weeks ago to honor him with this very whimsical garden lobster bake. My dad left us a lot of legacy—Some good some bad. but whimsy is definitely part of it, and one I’ll always appreciate. by @writingburch

Trying a new thing where instead of saying “We should really take the kids to Quebec,” we just, take the kids to Quebec. We discovered that—nevermind poutine, or even crepes—Quebec has the best ice cream on earth, as verified by a family that takes ice cream extremely seriously. by @writingburch

My dad *loved* an artisan’s fair. Being at fairs with him, selling his books and talking to fellow artists, are my happiest memories. I still have art hanging in my house that I bought with the $20 he’d give us.

This week, it will be two years since he died. There’s no better way to honor his legacy than bringing these three to the Craftsman’s Fair, and watching thier awe at the creativity in this world. @leagueofnhcraftsmen @mountsunapee by @writingburch

Things I’ve been reading:

@kimberlymccreight’s “someone else’s husband,” perfect for enjoy enjoying on a float with gin and tonic.
@sarahcypher’s “the skin and it’s girl”… my pick of the litter this month. Epic fairytale and family lore with the Palestinian diaspora, which feels more timely than ever, and a beautiful story of queer legacy.
@allegragoodmanwriter knows how to write estrangement and opening pages
@fredrikbackman and his translator both inspire me with their everyday observations and artistry with words.
@caroclaireburke’s “yesteryear” did in fact live up to the hype. I laughed at the satire of it and was impressed how she conveyed a meaningful message and social commentary without ever feeling preachy. by @writingburch

I understand the heartwarming stories about World Cup fans falling in love with America, because that’s exactly what happened when we travelled the country for seven months.

I will always be patriotic for the people, the places, even the policies that have allowed us to protect this land. I hope 250 years from now, a little girl can still experience the awe of a buffalo grazing in her camp site, and an immigrant family can still fall more deeply in love with America. by @writingburch

It’s been a great reading month. “Unlikely Animals” was the type of book that made me abandon my children and responsibilities, send highlighted pictures to the people I love, and be in awe of @annie_hartnett’s gift. Absolutely devoured it, and I want more.

I was so excited to see @annie_hartnett coming to my slice of the woods (thanks @morganhillbookstore and @abbott_library for that treat!). I immediately downloaded “The Road to Tender Hearts” and it lived up to the promises—I truly laughed and gasped aloud.

@katiebernet’s “Beth Is Dead” was such a clever, creative debut; and @kirstenmillerbooks had me texting the Wild Women in my life to pick up this book, before I even finished. by @writingburch

Today, as I wrote amongst the stacks, trying to coax inspiration from the muses, I looked at all the books around me. All the other authors who have gone through the tedious, frustrating and enchanting process of creating, just because. How beautifully human that process is. by @writingburch

I spent 11 years sleeping with my ringer on, waiting for that dreaded middle-of-the-night call, so it felt inevitable when I finally received two years ago today. The ICU was an experience I hope never to have again; and yet thier life saving measures gave us four more months to really prepare to say goodbye—and to build the courage to tell doctors “no more.” My body, brain and soul are all missing him extra today. by @writingburch
