What scary book are you reading today?

I think I’m grabbing “The Colorado Kid” by Stephen King for a quick re-read.

Let me know what you’re reading in comments, and maybe I’ll add something to my overflowing TBR list! by @writingunfiltered

Each of these books were unsettling the first time I read them, or tried.

“Fledgling” took me months to get past the first chapter.

I’m not sure I can pick one reason “Flowers in the Attic” was unsettling, but it was. There are so many plot points to choose from!

And when I read R.L. Stine’s “Cheerleaders” trilogy (and “Interview With the Vampire,” not pictured) I had a very vivid imagination and admittedly thought characters might come to life and get me. 🤷‍♀️ I was like 10-ish.

I’m a big fan of horror novels and movies, but this year I’m thinking about books that could come across as horror but that aren’t actually in the genre or marketed that way.

My first thought, based on the book cover alone was one of my favorites of this year so far: “Long Live Evil” by Sarah Rees Brennan. Sure, it’s gory and there are evil acts, but there’s more to it than that.

I sough suggestions on BookThreads, and what you see in the image is a few of the suggestions I received.

Horror movies are popular, but books in the horror genre are too, especially this time of year.

There are multiple subgenres in the category of “horror,” and here are a few of my favorites.

What’s your fave horror novel? Drop it in the comments, and maybe you’ll find something new to read! by @writingunfiltered

There's just something about a well-written horror novel (or well-acted and directed horror film) that draws me in.

Growing up, I wasn't supposed to watch scary movies. I did read books that I had to hide in my closet and try to ignore - but not because I was hiding them because I wasn't supposed to have the books.

No, I hid the books in my closet, buried under piles of clothes and stuff, because whatever was in some of those books was terrifying, and I was convinced it was going to come after me.

Luckily, as an adult, my brain has calmed enough to know that the evil zombie cheerleaders from R.L. Stine's Cheerleaders trilogy aren't coming to kill me. Louis, Lestat, and Claudia aren't coming for my throat.

I can't be the only bookworm whose imagination got away from them, can I?

I shout about banned books because I think they’re important. And to answer the question posed, I’m opening up my copy of “The Giver,” and then maybe “Fahrenheit 451.” by @writingunfiltered

According to the American Library Association, parents were one of the smallest categories of people who challenged books and pushed for titles to be banned in 2025.

The highest and second highest were boards and administration; and elected officials/governments.

But it’s the third group that bothers me the most. Pressure groups were responsible for 21% of book bans in 2025, and I remember reports saying that many of these challenges in x state were from individuals and groups in other states.

I don’t like that one bit. Scroll through the slides on this carousel to see what I’m wondering about a book challenges/ban process, then let me know your thoughts?

I’d love to hear them! by @writingunfiltered

What banned book is your favorite?

“The Giver” is one of mine.

It broke my heart in elementary school in ways I didn’t fully understand, but I knew I didn’t like the way the society operated for Jonah and his family and friends.

Parts I didn’t like reading and couldn’t believe were possible as an elementary student had me feeling all twisty snd choked up as an adult too.

It made me think about uncomfortable questions, and picture a world where things were different. It still makes me ask those questions and imagine a better world. by @writingunfiltered

The top banned books of 2026 are in, and I must have to say this: kids are going to learn about the topics in those books whether they have the books or not.

Wouldn’t it be better for students to read the books and had an opportunity to discuss them in an environment where they feel safe than to get caught up in the issues you’re banning books for talking about?

Banned books week is one of my least-liked week of the year, in full honesty.

I love talking about books, and I have more than a bit of "you told me not to do this, so I'm going to make it happen!" attitude in me. So I love reading books people say shouldn't have an audience, within the content limits I set for myself.

But the fact that year after year we are still forced to talk about books that people who probably haven't read them are trying to keep out of school and public libraries, and out of readers' hands is rage-inducing.

Parents have a right to tell their children what they can and can't read. They do not have the right to choose what OTHER parents' children can and cannot read.

And threatening librarians with arrest for having certain books in their libraries is one of the worst ideas I've ever heard. by @writingunfiltered

I know, I know. It’s barely October.

But it’s time to update this month’s expected TBR list

That’s probably NOT how I’ll get my not-work reading done, but here are three books I’m excited to remove from my to-be-read list this month!

Laid out like this, it doesn’t seem like I read much last month, but I did!

I started my spooky season reads between client projects - both fiction and nonfiction - and not only did I find myself wildly entertained, I learned some stuff too.
