POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
47 years ago, the West Side Campaign Against Hunger was founded at 263 West 86th Street on the Upper West Side.

Since then, we’ve welcomed neighbors, packed tens of millions of pounds of healthy food, built lasting partnerships, and grown alongside our community. While we’ve never outgrown our home, we knew it was time for our space to better reflect who we are today.

We’re excited to share our newly renovated 86th Street workspace, thoughtfully redesigned to feel like WSCAH: warm, vibrant, welcoming, and rooted in community.

The refreshed space includes collaborative work areas, meeting rooms, phone booths, a café, a wellness room, and flexible spaces that support the people behind our mission every day.

The address hasn’t changed, but the space has. Here’s to the next chapter in the place we’ve proudly called home for nearly five decades. #foodsecurity #nonprofit #endhunger #nyc taken in Upper West Side by @wscah_

Our FY2025 annual report reflects a powerful idea: the seeds we plant together today shape what’s possible tomorrow.

“Planting Seeds for the Future” is how we approached a year of growth, innovation, and deepened impact across New York City. Together, we distributed 5.3 million pounds of healthy food, connected 1,600 families to benefits, secured more than $3.5 million in SNAP benefits, and served 100,000+ New Yorkers.

Behind every number is a neighbor, a family, and a story of resilience.

For all of June , we’re adding the ingredients to make sofrito, along with Martina’s recipe, to every bag of groceries we provide our customers.

A longtime customer, volunteer, and Board Member, Martina has been an important part of the WSCAH community for many years. Today, she’s sharing her homemade sofrito, a flavorful blend of herbs and vegetables that serves as the foundation for many beloved dishes, from rice and beans to soups and stews.

By sharing recipes like this one, Martina helps keep family traditions alive while bringing a taste of culture, community, and care to our tables.

Thank you, Martina, for sharing your story, your kitchen, and your love of cooking with us. ✨

We deliver food to the homes of over 1,300 people who have difficulty traveling due to health, pregnancy, or fear of immigration enforcement. Thanks to drivers from @TRYHUNGRY, our customers get their food when they need it.

Last week, some of our food delivery drivers got together for a breakfast with our programs leaders to share experiences, discuss operations, and identify improvements. These conversations help our teams learn from one another and continue strengthening the home delivery experience for the New Yorkers we serve. Thank you, drivers! by @wscah_

Want an easy way to support healthy food access in New York City? Start a fundraiser for WSCAH and invite your friends, family, or coworkers to join you.

This holiday season, we’re preparing to distribute 16,000 turkeys and pork shoulders to help New Yorkers celebrate with healthy food on the table.

Set a goal that feels right for you, starting at $100. A $1,000 fundraiser can provide 13 families with everything they need for a Thanksgiving meal.

Turn it into a friendly competition, share it with your community, or simply invite the people in your life to help you reach your goal.

"One family in Washington Heights would rather share a single apple among three children than risk standing in a food pantry line. Martina Santos knows this because she knows them. For over a decade, she has volunteered at West Side Campaign Against Hunger, checking in families, packing bags, and learning names. Lately, some of those names aren’t showing up anymore.

"La migra mala - they want to separate us," Santos said, using the Spanish term for ICE and immigration authorities, describing what she hears from families who no longer come.

They're not the only ones. In New York City, immigrant families are staying away from pantries, sending neighbors to pick up food, or going without entirely. According to the Deportation Data Project, between June and July alone, NYC saw 2,492 ICE arrests with detention. That fear is now showing up in pantry lines and communities. When ICE enforcement intensified in Minnesota last year, according to Food Bank News pantry visits dropped by up to 50 percent in some locations. Food pantries turned to mobile deliveries because it was the only way to reach families too scared to leave their homes, even for food."

What happens when people are afraid to visit a food pantry?

Some New Yorkers are making an impossible choice: risk leaving home to get food or go without.

A new article examines how fear of ICE enforcement is keeping some immigrant New Yorkers from visiting food pantries, and what organizations like WSCAH and NY Common Pantry are doing in response.

The piece features WSCAH Board member, customer, and longtime volunteer Martina Santos, along with CEO Greg Silverman, and explores our efforts to expand home delivery and community-based food access.

When SNAP work requirements threatened her benefits, Maygan joined WSCAH's volunteer program, completing qualifying service hours while helping pack healthy food for our customers.

Maygan didn't think she'd be impacted by the new rules, since she works several part-time jobs while she searches for stable employment.

“The misunderstanding is that we want the check and that’s it. A lot of us want to work.”

Since launching in April, the program has welcomed 20 volunteers each month. In October, we’re expanding to our 86th Street location and six community hubs, creating more than 100 possible volunteer placements.

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating the traditions, stories, and contributions of members of our WSCAH community.

Today, we’re sharing a recipe from Caty, a longtime WSCAH customer and volunteer. Her recipes have been passed down through generations, with her own twist added along the way. She’s also known as an excellent cook among WSCAH staff who have had the pleasure of trying her food!

Caty’s Calabacitas a la Mexicana is a classic Mexican dish made with zucchini, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and herbs. Try it with a side of rice and your choice of protein.

In October, we’ll be distributing recipe bags with the ingredients to make this dish, including the vegetables featured in the recipe.

We hope you enjoy this recipe from Caty as much as we do! by @wscah_
