Some time ago I was asked to do some sketches for @spottedfawnproductions and @pamelapostmedia stop motion animation Haboolm Ksinaalgat Soul Catcher. It was a step outside my default mode of drawing. This was one of the efforts called, ‘Atsi and the Witness.’ The brilliant artists at SFP turned them into maquettes for the film and I was gifted an even more mini version last weekend at the community screening of the film in Vancouver.

It’s hard to believe almost a week has gone by since we opened Water Wings for the Big Waves at the @sunshinecoastarts Centre for the @secheltartsfestival . It was a great turnout and collision of worlds…in a good way. I wasn’t hoping to be so overwhelmed with feelings at the beginning of my talk, but I felt a lot of love help push frogs out of my throat 😆 😭 🐸 Massive thank you to @domestic_shaman aka Dionne Paul for opening the space up for us and holding space and making me laugh when my voice was still in shaky mode.

Here are some vids I took of the install week at the Centre. Gargantuan thank you to all of the staff at the space. My son and I felt very welcome and were even blessed by Missy the gallery dog on a couple occasions. Simon was such a pro in helping me install and guiding my steering of the moving truck. Thank you again to Sadira for trusting me in the space and being a bastion of support.

I’ll post some more pics of the individual works over the next few weeks and throw in some artist statement tidbits and snacks. Gia’nakaci ✨

Sneak peek of the media room install at the @sunshinecoastarts Centre. It’s been a hell of a week here and the gallery folks Sadira, Simon, Nana, Anostin etc have been top notch, helpful, kind and encouraging. I’ve had some crickets to keep me company at night and a close encounter with a bear and a coyote. Love is in the air.

Water Wings for the Big Waves opens tomorrow night at 6pm. It will be up until Oct 17th as part of the @secheltartsfestival Gallery hours are Weds-Sun 12-4pm. There will be food tomorrow night from @_pumpkin___08 It’s amazing!

✨Water Wings for the Big Waves by Bracken Hanuse Corlett
Up and down the pacific northwest coast there are stories shared of the great flood. They speak about the rising waters, the urgency to escape to higher ground and coming down to start over again after the water recedes. In my home community, Wuikinuxv, it is said the People who survived the flood climbed the mountain known as Kvauma (seat of the eagle) to escape the push of the ocean water.

✨Great snow, floodwaters and other stories by Robert Joe and Jessica Silvey
shíshálh oral narratives describing the great flood, the great snow and the great landslide speak to significant events in the collective history of the shíshálh swiya. According to one, a global cataclysmic flood occurred, impacting the swiya. The shíshálh people survived the flood by using their canoes to form a raft and anchoring their canoes to an uprooted Yew tree that floated to the top of kel’s mountain (“Anchor Mountain”). When the flood receded, the tree wedged itself to the mountain and remained there for a long time. This soundwork shares these and other stories and recollections.

✨ Laiwan's "How Water Remembers" explores False Creek and how biodiversity and cultural diversity remembers, a flow of a way of life, a return of ancestral worldviews, traditional knowledge and stewardships, training an agile consciousness. It invites us to play, build compassion and build awareness and cultural value in developing sustainable ecologies for humans and biodiversity. By increasing ecological biodiversity, scientists believe we can slow down global warming and also increase protections against future pandemics.

An update on time and space.

This will be my first time showing work in Shishalh territory. A mix of paintings, Knick knacks and moving image projections.

The exhibition will be up until October 17th as part of the Sechelt Arts Festival.

We’re thrilled to announce Haboolm Ksinaałgat (SOUL CATCHER) as an official selection of the Edmonton International Film Festival @edmfilmfest (EIFF) (Sept. 24- Oct 3/26).

After a supernatural journey propels them all the way from the banks of the Skeena River to a big metropolitan city - an ancient Ts’msyen shaman, her reluctant teenaged apprentice and Gaax the raven find themselves in a major museum, after dark, surrounded by sacred treasures stolen from far away lands.

In the old shaman’s words “We hope you all get out of this jail and back home soon!”

Ultimately the mission is left to the young apprentice Lu’oo’ya to find a way to bring the sacred treasures of the Ts’msyen back home to the Skeena River.

This powerful scene in our new stop motion animated film Haboolm Ksinaałgat (SOUL CATCHER) was a tour de force of northwest coast Indigenous art design and innovation. We collaborated with three northwest coast artists/carvers Phil Gray (Ts’msyen), Dean Hunt @dean_hunt_art (Heiltsuk) and Bracken Hanuse Corlett @wuulhu (Wuikinuxv/Klahoose) to design original totem poles for the museum scene.

Over many months of process, their designs were turned into 3D models and prints to become miniature totem poles for the magic of stop motion production and set design to create this powerful and authentic setting for a climactic and emotional scene. A massive team effort across many departments!!

Side Quest:

In drawing 100, I drew hundreds of eggs with charcoal and my fingers. Working with charcoal and conté crayons and things like that made me squeamish even though it helped me understand shadow and light source. I still practice on paper and doing some gestural drawing with a loose elbow is in my plans for the future.
