Tea is simple, as simple as water.
It only needs a container,
held by human hands.

First we drank with the hands themselves,
cupped, open, receiving
already a kind of prayer.

Then the hands could not hold
what boiled.
So the cup was born.

A tea cup is a prayer,
and tea is the divine.

She took on our karma,
walked through
war, peace, travel, belief
sacrificing her holiness for us.

We don’t make the bowl for ourselves.
We make it as an offering to tea.

Before the bowl,
tea was formless.
It is no coincidence
she asks to be held by water.

Let’s pray again, take another sip. taken in Umbria by @wuweito

A few days ago, I shared something with the physical world that had existed inside me for a very long time. Something I never truly had the courage to let out of my inner world.

This book took shape a few years ago. It changed titles. It evolved alongside me, in the time I’ve been given with tea and with clay. This year, under the energy of the fire horse, so much has moved, mostly inside me, and that’s exactly why the book decided to manifest in the physical world, whether I was fully ready or not. I’m still writing it. I won’t let it out until I feel it’s truly finished, even if maybe it never fully will be. Beautiful things take their own time to come into their true nature. So will this book. I’ll finish it this winter. Winter is my favorite season, made of long silence wrapped in cold. With spring, a new inspiration usually arrives, and I feel that might be the right moment. Inshallah.

I’m deeply grateful for your enthusiasm, your endless support and interest, your love for what I’m doing. I feel all of you, always.

This won’t be a long book. It will be essential, the way everything in my practice is. But I want it to be something that stays with you, the way my tea ware stays with people, as companions for life.

It isn’t easy to enter this thousand-year-old conversation between humankind and tea. But I’ll do my best to take part in it. I remain a humble student, always. Always devoted to life, to tea, to the earth, to God.

Thank you. taken in Umbria by @wuweito

I’m not interested in producing things that “perform.”
I’m interested in building things that could not have been made any other way. Things that required obsession. Things that risk being misunderstood. Things that take years before they make sense to anyone else 🤲🏼😌 taken in Umbria by @wuweito

An overview of the latest books I’ve been looking at for my research. The books I use to study can’t easily be found in libraries, and the research that comes before the real research is another skill to develop over time. These pictures I took aren’t from the same book, they’re extracts from different publications about chanoyu during the Edo period. Different writers, different years. The oldest I found is Chanoyu Kokon Wakumon, edited in 1692 by Endō Genkan. Every time, I take a deep breath before diving into those huge rabbit holes. More explorations to come on my Substack 🤲🏼 by @wuweito
