[World Migratory Bird Day: Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!👀]

On World Migratory Bird Day (10 October), we celebrate birds and their habitats. This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!”, highlights the importance of citizen science in safeguarding migratory birds along all the world’s flyways.

Take the Black-faced spoonbill as an example. 🐦Every year, hundreds of volunteers, researchers and conservationists across the East Asian-Australasian Flyway help count black-faced spoonbills, and tracking their migration route. Over more than three decades, long-term monitoring, wetland conservation, community engagement and transboundary collaboration have helped the population recovered from fewer than 300 birds to more than 7,700 today. It's an encouraging story, made possible by people working across borders to protect the habitats these migratory birds depend on🤝☘️.

Mai Po and Inner Deep Bay serves as an essential stopover and wintering habitat for Black-faced Spoonbills from November through April. Our team at Mai Po Nature Reserve works tirelessly to manage the wetlands, ensuring optimal habitats and plenty of food for our feathered visitors.

You can help too! 📷📝If you spot a bird wearing colourful leg flags or leg bands in the wild, take a picture and let us know where and when you saw it.

[𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 2026: Amid Wildlife Loss, Science Finds Hope]

WWF’s latest 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘵 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵 2026 is out today, and the numbers are a wake-up call. The Living Planet Index (LPI) points to a large global decline in nature – a stark 73% decline ⬇️ in the average size of monitored wildlife populations over a 52-year period (1970-2022).

📉 The LPI monitors data and trends from 35,803 populations of 5,790 vertebrate species (mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians). It reveals:
- Freshwater species saw the steepest drop (-85%), followed by terrestrial (-69%) and marine species (-59%).
- Habitat loss and degradation remain the biggest threat, followed by overexploitation, climate change, pollution, invasive species, and disease.

🌱 Yet amid this rapid decline, hope remains!
Half of the studied wildlife populations are stable or increasing. Recoveries in populations of green turtles, bluefin tuna, tigers, and southern African elephants proves one thing: targeted conservation works.

🔄 How do we turn the tide?
The main drivers of nature loss trace back to three core systems: Energy, Food, and Finance. By triggering "positive tipping points," we can drive systemic change and help nature recover. The sooner we act, the better for humanity and the planet.

[HK Native Plant Series: More than a pitcher]

Mention pitcher plants (𝘕𝘦𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘴), and most of us picture the pitcher that digests insects. The flowers are just as tied to insects.

They usually grow in nutrient-poor soils. Roots cannot take up enough nutrients, so the leaf midrib lengthens into a tendril and the tip swells into a pitcher. Nectar at the mouth invites insects in🪰. One slip, and they fall inside to be digested🧪.

The pitcher plant is dioecious. Male and female flowers never occur on the same plant. This rust-red raceme has a pale yellow at the centre of each flower. That knob is a column of fused stamens with a little pollen on top, so these are male flowers. Female flowers lack that column. They have a sticky stigma instead, which catches pollen. 🐝Nectar and scent attract pollinating insects that carry pollen from male plants to female ones.

[🐢World Animal Day | Think Before You Buy]

You may see a reptile selling for just a few hundred dollars and think you've found a unique companion. But before buying, ask yourself: Where did it come from? Is the trade legal? Is the species protected under CITES?

Take the alligator snapping turtle as an example. A hatchling may look small and manageable, but it can grow to over 60 kg and live for more than 50 years. Providing proper housing, nutrition and veterinary care is a commitment that lasts decades.

Unfortunately, some owners underestimate these responsibilities and abandon their pets when they become too large or difficult to care for. Alligator snapping turtles have been found abandoned in Hong Kong. With no natural predators here, they can threaten local wildlife and biodiversity⚠️.

Through WWF's GUARD programme, we’re working to reduce demand for illegally traded wildlife and encourage more informed choices by consumers .

This World Animal Day (4 Oct), remember: responsible pet ownership starts before the purchase💭. Consider an animal's source, conservation status, welfare needs and lifelong care requirements before bringing it home.

💚 A pet is not a product. It's a lifelong commitment.

[Mid-Autumn Festival🌕Sharp Island Coastal Cleanup🌊]

Today, the day after the Mid-Autumn Festival (26 Sept), WWF-Hong Kong🐼 teamed up with the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), the Hong Kong Marine Protection Alliance, and our partners for a coastal cleanup at Sharp Island! It was a meaningful way to spend the holiday!💪

A heartfelt thank you to every volunteer who took action to make our coastline cleaner!❤️ Cleaning up is vital, but it’s our last line of defence. The key to truly protecting our oceans is waste reduction at source. When visiting the countryside and beaches, please remember to “Take Your Litter Home” and enjoy nature in a way that shows respect and care for our precious marine ecosystems.

👉 Coming up: See you during the 1/10 Golden Week!
From 1 to 7 October, WWF will continue setting up our marine conservation booth at Sharp Island. Our ocean ambassadors will be there to promote ocean-friendly practices, including:

🦀 Practising responsible ocean-use (e.g., do not touch or collect marine life!)
🛶 Following “Coral Safe Routes“ (guiding snorkellers and kayakers to select appropriate entry and exit points)

While enjoying Hong Kong’s nature, let’s all work together to minimise disturbance to corals and sensitive habitats. Join us in taking action to protect our oceans! 🙌 by @wwfhk

[🌕Happy Mid-Autumn Festival🥮]

Moonlight silently blankets the water lily pond🪷. Looking at this peaceful scene, do you feel as calm and relaxed as Panda Editor?☺️

Unlike edible lotus, water lilies don’t yield lotus seeds or lotus roots, yet they are far from useless! Water lilies are floating plants, their leaves drift on water surface. By blocking a portion of sunlight, they help regulate water temperature, creating resting, hiding and feeding grounds for wildlife. They can also absorb nutrients to purify the water💦. We really can’t underestimate them.

Lastly, may the full moon bring you and your family a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival💕
