At the start of this year’s wildfire season, food writer Meghna Jaradi (@thali.creative) set out to investigate a largely underreported phenomenon: As wildfires have grown in scale and intensity, wildfire *smoke* has wafted further and more often, negatively impacting all sorts of local food systems far from the direct site of a fire.

What’s being done about it, and how might it affect Washington’s food systems as global temperatures rise?

In her thoroughly investigated piece, Meghna shows how the wine industry — a relatively deep-pocketed, well-researched agricultural sector — offers early signs of where Washington’s food systems might head in response to more wildfire smoke.

Meghna spoke to local winemakers, restaurant workers, wine researchers, climate-change experts, and others. She foresees new farming, labeling, sourcing, and labor standards on the horizon; new tastes that people will acclimate to; and a growing need to change how we farm and harvest in the face of climate change.

I’m excited & honored to share that this piece, 𝐌𝐲 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐩𝐚 𝐭𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 (2026), has been acquired by the King County Public Art Collection! 🥰

As I navigate the political unrest in my hometown, Indonesia, while moving through the socio-political tensions of the United States, I’m reminded of the 1998 anti-Chinese riots that I experienced, marked by ethnic violence, looting, & sexual assaults against Chinese-Indonesians. The current epistemicide of immigrants, Indigenous communities, and other marginalized groups in America echoes the erasure I experienced at age 3. In moments of civic unrest, I’m reminded that art can be a form of resistance, a vessel for hope, and for cultural preservation. By sharing my art, I hope to weave fragments of my heritage into Seattle’s evolving story, contributing to a more visible & expansive understanding of who belongs in this city.

“GROWING SEASONS,” a short story by Dayjha McMillan (@yourautisticangel), reflects on a relationship that’s reached its end — wrapped up in the narrator’s relationship to Seattle, to nature, and to time itself.

Structured around the excitement and bounty of blackberry season, and its sudden annual departure, our narrator ponders the fruits and consequences of growing up: “A fermenting process, a bitter tongue, and a piercing truth that we will bloom again.”

Accompanying Dayjha’s story are stark, textured charcoal drawings by Wynonna Susilo (@wynpokes), a Seattle-based artist and art therapist.

𝐋𝐨𝐰 𝐓𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐝 is based on a childhood memory of collecting shells and exploring sea creatures in Bali’s low tide pools with my dad. This has since become a tradition that I honor to this day with my growing collection of rocks and shells, serving as reminders of home. by @wynpokes

𝙄 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙜𝙤, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙡𝙚𝙛𝙩 is a series of linocut prints that revisits childhood memories through a contemporary Batik lens. These memories serve as reminders of what I had to leave behind for a better life, accompanied with the grief of losing familiarity, the longing for community, and the eventual acceptance of a new identity. As I reflected on my 13th year anniversary of immigrating to America, I find myself more able to embrace the joy and pride of being Asian American, an identity I once resisted, fearing it meant turning my back on my Chinese-Indonesian roots and the sacrifices of my ancestors.
To be Asian American is to navigate a layered dance of pride, nostalgia, and responsibility: a commitment to honoring tradition while shaping a life beyond it.

Putri Malu translates to “shy princess” which refers to the “sensitive plant” species indigenous to Indonesia. When I think about migration, I think about the concept of Firsts; First time discovering a putri malu, the first snowfall, first social security card, the first to leave home, the first one to try it all. by @wynpokes
