last Sunday, The Continuing Story of Life on Earth: 25 Years of Hamburger Eyes closed at the San Francisco Public Library. i’ve been reflecting on what it meant to be part of it.

seeing my photographs alongside so many art comrades was f-ing rad. people connected through skateboarding, hip-hop, street culture, and all the spaces, places, and worlds in between:: every photographer brought their own eyes, their own moments in time:: walking through the show, i kept finding photographs that stopped me in my tracks.

what makes street photography so powerful to me??? someone pays attention, takes the photograph, and a moment that could have disappeared becomes part of our history. we get to tell our own stories.

i’m proud to have been part of Hamburger Eyes and this show. much love to Ray Potes, David Potes, Stefan Simikich, and all the photographers who have kept it going for 25 years. thank you to Ray and Megan Merritt for curating the show in collaboration with Julie Giles and the San Francisco Public Library Exhibition Team. what a beautiful thing we’ve made together. @hamburger_eyes @sfpubliclibrary @tobinyelland

grateful to be part of two Hamburger Eyes projects this season.

on august 6, Hit and Run: Photography Is, @tobinyelland film, screens during the @hamburger_eyes Video Fest at the San Francisco Public Library. the film features conversations with @cynthi4connolly @lanced @cheryldunn @magdawosinskastudio @petersutherland on photography and includes work from across my photographic practice.

i’m also grateful to have my photograph, ::my trigger ain’t got no heart::, included in The Continuing Story of Life on Earth: 25 Years of Hamburger Eyes, an exhibition featuring the work of 83 photographers, on view through september 24.

i’m in the Hamburger Eyes ::The continuing story of life on earth::25-year show at San Francisco Public Library. founded in 2001 by Ray Potes with his brother David and Stefan Simikich, this thing been running off grit, film, and pure street vision—200+ zines deep. big lineup, hella artists… gonna be hella dope🔥 i’m in there, in the grain, in the flicker of 25 years blood, sweat n tears.

xiouping: modalities: the body keeps time
at Beyond Baroque

Opening Reception:
Saturday, April 11, 3-5 pm

The work of artist xiouping is a 12-minute video and sound installation composed of a looped single-channel video. The camera stays in a fixed position inside a bedroom. We see a woman pushing someone in a wheelchair off camera, and then the same woman coming and going, tidying the room and the bed, carrying cups and bottles away from the bedside table, arranging medications, emptying the commode and changing the lining, placing new mattress protectors on the bed, and performing many actions indicative of caregiving to a disabled person, who is off camera. by @xiouping

i’m opening a new space for writing… slower, more deliberate, less beholden to the churn.

co-worlding soft armor… an inquiry into care, visibility, and the architectures we build to hold one another without calcifying.

we are artists in a rural red county in california, working in a place where protesters have already faced hostility and violence. this project comes from living inside that pressure.

we recognize the land as ancestral… and we work in respect with the earth keepers who have carried its memory. we honor the Tübatulabal people, along with Yokuts and Kitanemuk tribes of what is now called kern county.

because targeted harassment is real here, the site stays concealed. the work proceeds with intention, not permission.

i protest by resting…
by slowing down when the world demands speed…
by reclaiming time as sacred.

i protest through pleasure…
through laughter, through sensuality, through joy that cannot be owned.

i protest by making…
planting, writing, sculpting, tending, healing, caring.
every gesture becomes an act of defiance against brutality.

i protest through comedy and art…
through saying the truth sideways,
through humor that heals and reveals.
sometimes laughter is how the body survives the unbearable.

i protest through ancestral courage…
through remembering what has been erased,
what almost has been erased.

i protest by reading…
bell hooks, audre lorde, gloria anzaldúa, adrienne maree brown, judith butler,
angela davis, toni morrison, fred moten, tricia hersey,
robin wall kimmerer, w.e.b. du bois, james baldwin,
octavia butler…
their words are blueprints, balm, and fire.
they live in my hands when i sculpt, write, perform, and laugh.

i protest for democracy.
i protest for freedom.

this is not just resistance…
it’s devotion.
it’s radical joy, pleasure, love.
it’s art.
