Reverse osmosis is already a cornerstone of modern desalination. The opportunity now is to rethink what’s happening inside the system.

That’s where these four #XPRIZEWaterScarcity Track A Semifinalists are focusing their efforts.

➡️ Smarter membrane designs could help improve system efficiency.

➡️ Innovations such as printed spacers can improve how water flows across membranes.

The impact of improvements like these can extend well beyond a single component, potentially reducing energy use and operating costs, improving system performance, and making seawater desalination more accessible.

Meet Active Membranes, Aqua Membranes, Aquatrino, Inc., and DESAL4ALL, four teams exploring new ways to improve efficiency at the heart of desalination. These teams are part of a cohort of 21 Track A Semifinalist Teams heading into semifinals testing, where they aim to prove their systems can work at pilot scale. Each team must run a fully integrated desalination system continuously for four weeks, producing 100,000 liters of clean water per day.

What can builders create when AI is the foundation, not just a feature?

After 26,000+ people registered from around the world, the Build with Gemini XPRIZE has its winners. Announced at Moonshots LIVE in Los Angeles, POLYFORK by Lucas Martinic took the top spot and a $500,000 grand prize. 🏆

Over 90 days, builders were challenged to launch a clean-sheet, revenue-generating business powered by AI. Their projects were evaluated across business viability, AI-native operations, and category impact.

POLYFORK sells 3D models as programs rather than fixed assets, so users can resize, recolor, and remix them before downloading. An AI-agent factory publishes more than 175 a week, and the catalogue of 583 models generated $4,428 from 54 paying customers in its first month.

The other finalists also took home awards:

➡️Second place: TICIAN CIERRE by José Edgar Peña Ramírez — $200,000

➡️Third place: MYFIXAM by Jane Chukwuyem Odum — $100,000

➡️Fourth place: LAUNCHBRIDGE by Chase Rosen — $100,000

➡️Fifth place: DODOPREP by Naveed Ahmed — $100,000

The competition also recognized standout ideas across five categories, awarding $50,000 prizes for projects advancing education and human potential, entrepreneurship and job creation, small business services, financial access, and professional services access.

And as AI agents increasingly become part of how businesses operate, the $50,000 Agentic Economy Prize, powered by Circle, went to MERGEGATE by Heartlin Machado.

What does a future worth building actually look like?

The Future Vision XPRIZE set out to explore that question through the power of storytelling, and after more than 2,500 submissions, we now have our grand prize winner, announced at the Moonshots LIVE event. 🎬

THE GIFTED by Jeff Synthesized took home the $2.5 million equity investment toward production, along with $100,000 for screenplay development to have their vision turned into a full-length feature, with support from Range Media Partners and Google’s 100 ZEROS initiative.

THE GIFTED captures the spirit of the Future Vision XPRIZE: using science fiction not simply to imagine what technology could do, but to ask what kind of future we actually want to create.

Four runner-up films each received $100,000 in cash, plus featured promotion and visibility with Hollywood producers and Google teams.

➡️Second place - NOBODY DIES ON MARS by Verena Puhm
➡️Third place - THORNE PROTOCOL by J. Ryan Williams
➡️Fourth place - SENTI by Isen Robbins
➡️Fifth place - SLINGSHOT by Hal Watmough

And audiences had their say, too. THE GIFTED also received the $50,000 top prize in the SPECS Audience Choice Award, selected through public voting.

It was a momentous day for #XPRIZEWildfire as we announced the competition’s awardees and celebrated the breakthroughs advancing more accurate and precise wildfire detection and suppression. 🔥

Held at the NYC Fire Museum during #ClimateWeekNYC, the ceremony brought together innovators, fire leaders, philanthropists, technology experts, and partners for an event focused on what’s possible when ambitious ideas meet one of the world’s most difficult challenges.

From conversations about how policy, industry, and innovation can bring Finalists’ technologies to scale, to discussions on how technologies including satellite integration, drones, cameras, and sensors could continue advancing wildfire detection and response, the event highlighted the progress made throughout the competition.

And now, the work continues. The awardees are entering the Impact Phase, where they’ll continue developing and testing their technologies in real-world environments.

A challenge of this scale takes an equally ambitious community behind it. Reverse osmosis (RO) has been widely used in desalination for decades. But is it possible to separate salt from water without RO?

Four #XPRIZEWaterScarcity Track A Semifinalists are exploring what happens when you start with completely different scientific principles, including:

➡️ Electromagnetic approaches
➡️ Thermal processes
➡️ Electrochemical systems
➡️ Plasma driven systems

Rather than asking how to make conventional RO incrementally better, these teams are working toward a new future for seawater desalination, potentially opening pathways to improved energy efficiency, reduced chemical requirements, and improved brine management.

Meet H2 Purus, PlasmaPure, Ocean Reviver, and Z Lab, teams that are challenging assumptions about how seawater can become fresh water. These teams are part of a cohort of 21 Track A Semifinalist Teams heading into semifinals testing, where they aim to prove their systems can work at pilot scale. Each team must run a fully integrated desalination system continuously for four weeks, producing 100,000 liters of clean water per day.

Congratulations to the #XPRIZEWildfire Autonomous Wildfire Response Track awardees!

🏆1st place & Bonus Prize - Anduril Industries

These teams have pushed forward different parts of the response cycle, demonstrating progress in rapid detection to identify fires earlier; end-to-end autonomy connecting detection, decision-making, and response; and detection-to-suppression performance to shorten the time between identifying a fire and taking action.

The judges recognized distinct breakthroughs across these areas, reflecting meaningful progress toward faster, more accurate and autonomous wildfire response.

But there is still work ahead, which is what makes what comes next especially important.

During XPRIZE Wildfire’s Impact Phase, teams will have opportunities for field trials, technology evaluation, and knowledge sharing designed to help translate promising advances into deployable solutions for real-world wildfire management.

The longer-term opportunity is bigger than any single competition result: to build on what these teams have demonstrated and accelerate the adoption, investment, and collaboration needed to bring autonomous wildfire response technologies into operational use.

Throughout the week, we’ll bring together innovators, leaders, partners, and XPRIZE alumni to explore some of the biggest opportunities, and challenges, shaping our planet’s future.

Wildfires can escalate in minutes. The #XPRIZEWildfire competition challenged teams to rethink how quickly we can detect and respond to emerging fires. On September 23 during #ClimateWeekNYC, we’ll recognize the innovators helping shape the future of wildfire response at the XPRIZE Wildfire Awards Ceremony.

Across two tracks, teams put their technologies to the test in real-world conditions during finals testing:

➡️ Space-Based Detection & Intelligence Track: Detect fires across New South Wales, Australia in one minute, characterize, and report them within 10 minutes, and minimize false positives using space-based data, AI, and machine learning.

➡️ Autonomous Wildfire Response Track: Identify and fully suppress an incipient wildfire in Nenana, Alaska across a 1,000 square kilometer, environmentally challenging area while leaving decoy fires untouched, using cameras, sensors, drones, autonomous platforms, and AI.

The work doesn’t stop with the end of this competition. The technologies, insights, and real-world experience generated through the competition can continue to inform how autonomous wildfire response evolves, while helping demonstrate what it takes to move emerging solutions from concept to capability.

What if the ocean wasn’t just the source of seawater, but the place where a desalination system is built? 🌊

For five #XPRIZEWaterScarcity Track A Semifinalists, that’s the idea behind taking desalination offshore.

Offshore systems can operate directly in the ocean, potentially taking advantage of depth, pressure, and wave motion. Moving systems offshore could reduce the need for some large land-based intake infrastructure.

However, these approaches present their own set of challenges that the Semifinalist Teams must tackle including corrosion, marine conditions, accessibility, and maintenance.

Meet Blue Carbon, ECOPEACE, Flocean, OceanWell, and @OnekaWater, five teams taking on the unique challenges of operating desalination systems at sea. These teams are part of a cohort of 21 Track A Semifinalist Teams heading into semifinals testing, where they aim to prove their systems can work at pilot scale. Each team must run a fully integrated desalination system continuously for four weeks, producing 100,000 liters of clean water per day.

If successful, offshore approaches could open up new possibilities for where and how seawater is converted into fresh water, particularly in places where land-based infrastructure is difficult to build or expand.

Shaping the future of education with Enuma. 📚

Education has the power to transform lives, but only if it’s accessible to all. Sooinn Lee and her husband Gunho, founders of Enuma, are making that vision a reality with their award-winning learning software.

Enuma created KitKit School for the Global Learning XPRIZE competition, which uses game-based learning to teach literacy, math, and foundational skills. Tested in Tanzanian villages, the tech empowers kids to learn independently, even in underserved areas. The software also fosters learning for entire communities, bridging socio-economic divides.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Enuma provided free educational tools in 55 countries, reaching millions.
