In celebration of over 40 years of “Wild Thing,” X have released a brand new video, narrated by Exene, and announced a special edition 12” picture disc vinyl. The picture disc which includes “Wild Thing,” a long-time fan favorite, as well as Exene’s narrated wild history of the song is available for pre-order now. The video behind the genesis of X’s “Wild Thing” was directed by James Blagden (the genius behind Dock Ellis & The LSD No-No). The release comes on the heels of MLB opening day and celebration of the Los Angeles Dodgers win in the World Series in 2024. taken in Los Angeles, California by @xthebandofficial

43 years ago this month, X came back with a record about the America they’d just seen up close, from the road. More Fun in the New World landed on Elektra in September 1983: the fourth X album, and the last one produced by Ray Manzarek. D.J. Bonebrake remembers the 1982 tour behind Under the Big Black Sun: “We could see the disillusionment of people who were losing jobs.” It found its way into the opening track. “The New World” is a tiny scene: a homeless man on a morning when the bars are shut, asking a stranger for a quarter, not sure who the president is. Exene Cervenka: “I wrote that one a long time ago. Bars used to close on election days… I think that’s why that song has remained timeless. Now, homelessness is a ridiculous epidemic… So, that song is very prescient.” She says she wrote “What’s-His-Name” instead of naming Reagan because a real name would have dated it. John Doe remembers Manzarek as a mentor and something close to a father figure. As Doe tells it, Manzarek put it this way: “You’re not The Beach Boys or The fucking Association!” Robert Christgau gave the album an A− and heard “new heights of junk virtuosity” in the songwriting and Billy Zoom’s guitar. It reached No. 86 on the Billboard album chart and stayed 23 weeks. When Rhino reissued it in 2002, PopMatters wasn’t optimistic: “The brave new world we live in probably isn’t — and may never be — brave or new enough to warm up to X.” Forty-three years later, we’re still asking who’s in charge, and whether anyone has a quarter. Happy anniversary, X. 🎙️ Exene Cervenka 🎙️🎸 John Doe 🎸 Billy Zoom 🥁 D.J.
