Last night was for solidarity, representation, community, culture, and truth. Thank you @nonazar.la for providing such a harmonious space for us to resist through song and dance. 🇵🇸

*FYI No Nazar means No Evil Eye and one of the ways to protect yourself (besides prayer) is to wear red. taken in Avant Gardner by @y3lda

Vogue India, August 2021. “In a city that embraces contrarians but doesn’t provide handouts, meet five women of South Asian origin who have carved a space for themselves in New York’s music industry, even as they remain audacious in their authenticity and ensure that they represent.”

It’s hard for me to post this feature with the excitement that I originally had, as my country falls to terrorists and my people face devastation. So I will use this moment to remind the world how tall we stand for Afghanistan. 🇦🇫

Last night might have been my favorite night out since becoming a mother. To watch Episode 1 of Freedom Frames and see how beautifully these incredible filmmakers captured my essence, and then look around a sold out room filled with so many people I love, respect and enjoy was really special. And a big shoutout to the DJs who landed the story perfectly. Watching this story come to life and then hearing it carried through the music afterward was everything.

I laughed, I danced, I hugged (almost) everybody, I stayed out way past my bedtime aka 11PM and for a few hours got to fully be in the moment and celebrate. Just JOY. What a night. What a room. What a gift! You can watch it now on YouTube (link in @freedomframes.series bio) and give them a follow because this is only the beginning of incredible stories they will be sharing around freedom.

Fit including vintage YSL blazer and my late grandma’s bloomers (the real star of the show).

Tuesday night come watch this sweet doc episode where I yap about everything from being Afghan at the doctor in America and my Mennonite family to the ethnic cleansing of Shias and what motherhood will teach you about creativity. And much more randomness that somehow manages to capture my story so accurately. But mainly, come for the incredibly talented filmmakers and DJs. You already know this room is going to be filled with the best people.

freedom frames ep. 1 BTS @freedomframes.series

in one week we premiere the debut episode of a passion project I created w/ @brennapower at a time where we realized that some of our deepest healing happens in community, especially among artists and immigrants navigating identity and resilience. we never imagined it would grow into something this expansive: a celebration of empathy that continues to grow

what a gift it was to first explore @y3lda ‘s definition of Freedom.

s/o @hifiprovisions for letting us explore this in your beautiful space

Your life is your children’s first education.

On September 29, you can find me at Lovejoys for the screening of Episode One of @freedomframes.series, a powerful documentary series where I share pieces of my life, from DJing to motherhood and everything in between, all through the lens of being Afghan. There’s something especially meaningful about telling this story now, knowing my children will one day understand not only where they come from, but what I chose to do with everything I inherited.

Meet Yeldā Ali—Afghan DJ, advocate, Women for Afghan Women board member, and MC of our upcoming HER Gala.

From the Afghan word “Bakhaire” to the music, food, and family memories that keep her connected to home, Yeldā carries culture with her in every part of her work. Her commitment to listening to Afghan communities—at home and across the diaspora—reminds us that meaningful support starts with showing up, paying attention, and refusing to let Afghan women be forgotten.

We’re honored to celebrate Yeldā and the powerful leadership she brings to our community. ✨
