Two years.

Five times the budget.

More weekends driving back and forth to Pioche, Nevada than I could ever count.

And somehow, this little 100-year-old house became exactly what I hoped it could be.

When we bought her, I knew I wanted to preserve the character that made me fall in love with her.

I wanted to keep the quirky pieces. The original cast iron sink. The clawfoot tub. The old paneling. The tiny medicine cabinet. The imperfections.

And then we started adding pieces of our own story too.

An old door that came from my grandparents’ home just 10 minutes away in Panaca.

A Bird’s-eye maple dresser that belonged to my husband’s great uncle.

Things that have absolutely no business being practical in a vacation rental… but belong here anyway.

Then we added the modern things that make actually welcoming guests into a 100-year-old home a whole lot easier.

Our Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch was one of the very first things we installed. Every guest gets their own unique entry code, I can share and schedule access, and I can control and monitor everything from anywhere through the Yale Access App.

We later added the Yale Smart Safe, so guests can use that same personalized code to secure their valuables without having one more number to remember.

And because Yale works with top smart home ecosystems, it has become one of those little behind-the-scenes pieces that makes hosting feel incredibly simple.

Now people come from all over to sleep here, cook in this kitchen, soak in that almost 90-year-old tub, sit outside under the Nevada stars, and make their own memories inside a house we came very close to losing our minds renovating.

And apparently we loved the chaos enough that…

We bought another one.

Another old Pioche house.

Another renovation.

Another chance to bring a little piece of Nevada history back to life.

And yes, one of the very first things going on the new house is another Yale lock.

So if you love old houses, before-and-afters, small-town Nevada and watching us figure all of this out as we go, stick around and hopefully we get to host you one day.

Finally found the most seamless way to wake up my space. 🔓

@yalehomeus just updated their Matter experience, and it’s really simplified my smart home setup. Instead of having to jump between apps, I can control everything in the Yale Access App.

I set it up so that unlocking the front door gets the workspace ready and the hallway lit up.

Thanks @yalehomeus for sending this amazing lock.

Ep. 4 of Home Tech Upgrades: The @yalehomeus smart lock with Matter

I’ve been looking to create an entrance into my home with a Smart Lock for contractors, friends/family and just the ease of not having to use a physical key anymore. With this smart lock I’m able to set 250 different entry codes, grant access to your home from anywhere and the best part - Yale has updated their Matter experience, so the lock works with other Smart Home upgrades I’ve already made and I can control everything through the Yale Access App instead of switching between apps. I’ve currently got it set to turning lights on and raising blinds when I enter.

Even with my limited handyman skills, it was an easy swap with the existing deadbolt. Onto the next upgrade!

Smart lock, cue the weekend.

There’s no better feeling than walking up to your door on a Friday night knowing the workweek is officially behind you.

With the renter-friendly Approach and Keypad, coming home feels like a personal butler has set the mood for you. Kick off your shoes, light your favorite candle, and officially unplug.

Need to check if the door is secure or let a friend in for movie night? You can do it all right from your phone using the app. No getting up required. by @yalehomeus

One of my favorite home upgrades has been switching to the @yalehomeus Assure Lock 2 Touch. I love being able to unlock the door with my fingerprint, lock or unlock it from the app, and create custom codes for family or guests. No more carrying keys, and the clean, modern design gives our entryway such an elevated look. It’s one of those upgrades that’s both functional and beautiful.
