HIroshima. The atomic bomb exploded on Aug. 6, 1945, some 600 meters in the air, flattening much of the old city and its wooden houses. The Czech-designed Exhibition Hall is one of the few structures that remained standing. Not much marks the spot of the actual explosion, with new buildings and a parking lot nearby. The picture looking up at the sky is right below the epicenter. Some 140,000 people died here in the immediate blast or from the effects of radiation. taken in Hiroshima by @yarotrof

It was raining heavily the first time I came to New York, from the then drab and dark Kyiv, and the beauty of the reflections was irresistible. It was a long time ago. Ronald Reagan was president. The gypsy cab that my mom picked up in JFK dropped her off but then jerked and swerved around the corner with me and our bags to avoid a fine. She thought I had been kidnapped within our first hour in Manhattan. New York rain is my madeleine. taken in New York, New York by @yarotrof
