Ceramics and other creative things by @sepialskitchen
POSTS STORIES REELS
I am working on small batches of ceramics for two of my favorite restaurants. Within my limited experiences in ceramics, I try to add a little meaningfully something in glaze, the soil from the farm where one restaurant is located and the fine sand from nearby beach of my friends’ new wine bar. by @yay.works
Summer is great for making papers. I tried to repurpose old invoices and tea leaves and started making paper coasters. We are still making these now. by @yay.works
I was lucky that there was a glaze workshop by Bianca Bernstein (her maiden name, now she doesn’t use this as her studio name any more though) at Pencil Ceramics in Woodstock. It was intensive but I could have a starting point on own glazes. by @yay.works
My ceramics were not perfect even to my beginner’s eyes, but I set them on one side of the restaurant to show and possibly sell them. My practice produced a lot more than I needed at the restaurant. So I just wanted to find them new homes. There are so many nice people who encourage a beginning potter and let her continue the practice. I cannot appreciate that enough. Thanks to them, walls of my current ceramics are getting thinner and more even, week by week. Around that time, I found interesting glaze could draw much more interests from customers. So I tried a couple of glazes from manufacturers, and I wanted to understand better, because a lot of time I couldn’t foresee the results. Glazes are not like paints. They seemed like chemistries and physics + magic. 2026/08 by @yay.works
I felt a little to stuck while I was practicing alone. I asked Thobias to teach me basic wheel skills for a couple of times. It helped me a lot. It was very hands-on and I could focus on throwing cylinders again and again until I felt “near” right. During that period, I had no finger nails and my hands were very soar. I tried to throw more than 24 cylinders a day and it took me a whole day 😂 Sometimes when I felt bored throwing the same cylinders, I made some rounded bowls. I still love this shape. by @yay.works
I could join workshops and practice wheel throwing a couple of hours a week, but I thought having my own and practicing intensively could save time and money in the long run. So I bought a very quiet and good looking one to make my practice more enjoyable. I still think it was a good decision. My son bought me a basic tool set and I tried to utilize spare kitchen equipments as much as possible. 2026/05/04 by @yay.works
I had watched a lot of wheel throwing from sns and I wanted to try. Buying a wheel is a kind of big commitment so I gave it to try with a helping friend. The first wheel thrown bowls were made at Bianca’s home studio. I became so obsessed with that spinning thing. (Glazing and firing were done later by Bianca) 2025/12/16 by @yay.works
Signage phase Shop signs, house numbers and similar items with carvings were made during off days. It was mostly to regulate stresses and to channel energy into creating something pretty. by @yay.works
The very first day started at Ceramic Lab with Mica I made business card size wine cork holders as they were needed at my restaurant. 2025/11/11 by @yay.works
