Introducing YDP’s new Artist-in-Residence: Zishi Han

We are delighted to host Zishi Han (@zzishihan) as our autumn resident. Based in Frankfurt, Han often develops projects with attention to spatial conditions and material behaviours. Before studying art, Han trained as an engineer and designer.

From 3 October, you will encounter in our Artist’s Lab a display of Han’s recent moving-image work, ‘the nocturnal flights of stillness’ (2026), alongside a low vibrating platform at the centre of the space. Performances and small interventions will gradually shift the display throughout the residency.

🌙NEW EXHIBITION

Join us on 2 October for the opening of ‘true names’, a group exhibition that considers naming as an ethical practice that opens a space for socio-political negotiation.

A true name often carries the magical power to mark a crossing between person and spirit, self and community, past and future. Across many traditions, the act of naming is a means of sharing knowledge and making connections in response to different historical and material conditions. Diasporic and Indigenous communities have long histories of concealing or modifying names when confronted with displacement, assimilation and political violence.

Between concealment and revelation, ‘true names’ opens a field where imperial epistemologies and capitalist regimes of value can be disarmed. Bringing together artworks emerging from contexts marked by struggles, the exhibition explores how relations among identity, spirituality and power are mediated and regenerated.

In ‘true names’, different magics, languages, histories and worlds brush against one another and remain interrelated, without being fully translated, possessed or made the same.

Exhibition Opening
📅 Friday 2 October
⏰ 18:00–20:00

We made it back to YDP (@ydp_space) just in time before their first group show, Unlicensed Goods, closes this weekend. It’s a major survey of Asian and Asian diasporic artists exploring the ad hoc networks and shadow economies that accompany the global movements of manufactured goods and migrant communities. Billy Tang (@billytanng) takes us through.

A little bit about YDP: it’s a non-profit dedicated to supporting artists of diverse Asian backgrounds, drawing from different diasporic experiences. Born as a personal project of arts philanthropist Yan Du, it is part of her overarching vision to facilitate transcultural dialogues.

Have you noticed the changes that have been happening in ‘Unlicensed Goods’?

As the exhibition evolves, so do a number of the artworks on view.

In the conservatory, Gala Porras-Kim’s (@itsgala) ‘Out of an instance of expiration comes a perennial showing’ has been transformed by mould liberated from the British Museum’s storage by the artist and allowed to propagate on an agar-soaked cloth. Elsewhere, prints from Christian Kōun Alborz Oldham’s (@flowerplanetberlin) growing archive of Kosen Ohtsubo’s (@kosen_ohtsubo) unconventional ikebana practice rotate throughout the exhibition. Yuyan Wang’s (@yuyanwang) works and Sine Screen’s (@sine_screen) month-long programme in the screening room continue to offer new perspectives on the themes of the exhibition

Make sure you catch the exhibition before it closes on 15 August!

Admission is free and open to all
Tuesday to Saturday, 11am–6pm
