Hey Art Walk artists, visitors, and supporters! With over 30 years of being Alberta’s oldest and largest non-juried visual arts festival, we are so grateful for the support over the years.

But did you know that in 2021, Activate Arts Alberta graciously took over the management of the Whyte Avenue Art Walk from the lovely owners of The Paint Spot? We thought we would share a little more about ourselves.

Hello 👋 We are Activate Arts Alberta—a non-profit arts organization that strives to bring beauty, art, and inspiration to communities. Along with the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, we are also the producers of Chiseled—Edmonton’s Ice Carving Exhibition which happens in January in the Ice District.

While we’re not busy planning and organizing this fantastic event, we are building enormous ice slides, intricate snow mazes, and designing ice and snow sculptures. You can see our programming and installations all across Alberta all winter long!

For more information about what we do and where we’ll be, make sure to follow our Instagram (@activateartsab) and Facebook pages, and check our website (www.activateartsab.ca) for more happenings! by @yegartwalk

You know about the Whyte Avenue Art Walk. You may have heard about Chiseled. But did you know that they are produced by the same company? And that we do even more exciting events and programming?

Hello 👋 We are Activate Arts Alberta—a non-profit arts organization that strives to bring beauty, art, and inspiration to communities. We are the producers of the Whyte Avenue Art Walk, Chiseled (Edmonton’s Ice Carving Exhibition), and we also offer a number of services for winter activations like ice slides, mazes, and sculptures, as well as activities and programming across Alberta.

We were formerly the Ice On Whyte Festival Society, however in 2022 we recognized the need for a name that better reflected our evolving mission. Thus, we rebranded as Activate Arts Alberta—a name we felt encapsulated our broader reach, dynamic programming, and commitment to fostering year-round visual arts activations.

With a deep appreciation for advancing public appreciation of the arts, we strive to create outdoor spaces where creativity thrives, and winter is embraced! by @yegartwalk

Throwing it back one last time to this year’s Whyte Avenue Art Walk 🤩🖌️ Though it was a bit stormier than we anticipated, it was a phenomenal success nonetheless. Even though you’ll have to wait a few more months for Art Walk 2027, Activate Arts Alberta isn’t going anywhere!

Stay tuned for information on where we’ll be over the winter to experience more of our fantastic programming!

We wanted to take a moment to thank our incredible sponsors, media partners, and partners. Having local organizations and businesses that support visual art and artists at events like the Whyte Avenue Art Walk is so important. Without your generous contributions, support, and dedication, this event would not be possible.

As summer slowly winds down, and we wrap up the Art Walk season, we are reminded why we do what we do—and our wonderful sponsors and partners remain a part of that reason. Thank you for helping to make the Art Walk an ongoing success. We look forward to doing it again next year!

Mark your calendars: the 32nd annual Whyte Avenue Art Walk will take place July 9 – 11, 2027! by @yegartwalk

As a “reclaiming” artist, I had a dormant skill of painting. In this world of AI, it is challenging to reclaim my artistry knowing that lots of generative AI abilities are mimicking high caliber of artistry. But AI hallucinations happen, so artists win! Seeing 470+ artists @yegartwalk ,it is amazing to see how our creative abilities are beyond measure!

Here are 3 of my personal take on why material culture matters in today’s world of AI:

1. Material culture means people have lived experiences. I have lived experiences. And so do you! Using fabrics and textiles are such a unique way to tell stories of how I depict moments converted into fine art.

2. Materials often came from our surroundings. Plants, metal, wood, we converted them to certain technologies of textiles, jewelries and houses! Imagine a world without a concept of “material.” You won’t be holding your phone right now!

3. Materials are tools to connect with various cultures. It’s a way to converse, chat or compliment. It’s something AI can only mimic. It’s something humans can tangibly connect deeply on a granular level.

It mag be hard for me to reclaim my artsy self but it fulfilling to know that my art works are better off felt in person and immersed through the stories of lived experiences.

Why do you think material culture matters more than ever?

It’s already been one week since Whyte Ave Art Walk 2026! 🎊
It was my first time attending as an artist after years of just admiring the other artists. I didn’t know what to expect, but it ended up being such a fun and memorable experience!

Thanks to everyone who stopped by my tent, supported my work, bought a print or painting, or even just took the time to say something kind about my art! 💕

Thank you to friends and family who helped me set up, hold my tent down during the storm, or just came over to support and say hi! 🫂

When I was studying in University, I told myself that the year I graduated, I would share my work at Art Walk. 2 years later I still didn't go because I didn’t think I was good or ready enough to show my work.

This year, I finally decided to just do it because I don’t think I would have ever felt ready. I’m so glad I did because the experience ended up being so much more amazing than I could have imagined.

// I also learned that making art doesn’t have to be serious and deep all the time. I can make work that I enjoy, and there’s a place for it.

(Ps: I also have some more stickers and prints available for purchase if you weren't able to come out link in bio or aandbliss on etsy) 💕🐕🐕 by @yegartwalk

Be sure to visit Old Strathcona now until July 20 to see this year's Art Walk sand sculpture completed by Activate Arts Alberta sand sculptors! It's located across from Old Strathcona Farmers Market on 83 Avenue.
⬇️
This year's theme is art deco style with the sun and moon sides, along with a 2nd smaller work. There's a lots of detail on this, and it survived the rainy storms as well. taken in Old Strathcona Farmers' Market by @yegartwalk

Last weekend was eventful.

I couldn't make the Whyte Ave Art Walk on Friday because of a family emergency. Then on Saturday, the storm hit.

My sister and I were holding onto our tent and trying to cover the tables when complete strangers ran over to help us, even though they were getting soaked themselves. When the tent broke, they helped carry my paper artworks and tables into the building in front of my booth.

Afterward, I kept thinking: if I had been a passerby, would I have stopped to help a stranger in that dangerous storm?

Because I experienced that kindness, I know I'll pay it forward one day.

This weekend reminded me that humanity is still alive, and my heart is full. It also reminded me why I love this community so much.

Thank you to everyone who offered to lend me a tent for Sunday.

While I was drying my pieces in the sun, people still stopped by to ask about my art. One of my most popular pieces is Grateful Relief (참 다행이다), and it couldn't have been a more fitting phrase. It means feeling relieved that things could have been much worse while being grateful for how they turned out. Even though my tent was destroyed, my artworks were okay because Hanji paper is incredibly strong.

Thank you to everyone who took a piece of my art home this weekend. I loved connecting with so many wonderful people and sharing my work.

And thank you to the organizers and volunteers of the @yegartwalk !

그날 받은 친절 덕분에 언젠가는 저도 꼭 다른 누군가에게 그 친절을 베푸겠다고 다짐 taken in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada by @yegartwalk
