1 MILLION STREAMS!!!!

Today YesterKid surpassed 1 million all time streams on Spotify! An amazing milestone to get to celebrate.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to make music that I’m passionate about with the people I love. I’m blown away that the songs we made have found an audience who have taken them in and made them part of their own lives.

To all the people that have helped YesterKid on its way - thank you. My dad used to write a lot of music. My dad was excited about the age of digital home recording, and he had some of the first available MIDI tools. When I was born my dad wrote me a song. I’m sure I’ve heard it, but I don’t remember it. The recording got lost on a floppy disc somewhere I’m sure. A computer from “the 1900’s”.

It was a subject of deep grievance and disappointment for my dad. He used to talk about being able to access the song again, in some angelic vault post this mortal coil. I’ve forgotten it. I thought I’d forgotten it.

Decades later, I sent my dad the start of this song, Beautiful Life.

To me, a step back from it, this record became about my experience with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder, to me, a step back from it, feels like forgetting. In highs of intense energy, I forget to remember myself (the me inheriting tomorrow). The relay racer picking up for me in the morning. And in low periods, I forget that I’ve been here before. Pain feels blindingly new, irreversibly permanent, inescapably tactile.

When I played this song for my dad, he said, “Little Sam remembered!”

My dad’s song for little Sam; Life Is Beautiful.

I need to remind me, sometimes. Run this groove into my subconscious. A reminder when I forget. When, for a beat, I see through it.

Baby, fake it!

Fake It, like much of this record, has been in the works for many years, but finds itself, for me, further applicable than it was at conception.   Fake It is written about the struggle to fit into systems that aren’t designed for you. In my own life, I think about being a neurodivergent child in a classroom, or even a neurodivergent adult in a workplace. Masking. Mirroring.   I joked yesterday, in a conversation with Zach, our producer, and really more than anything the third voice of YesterKid (you can hear him lend his voice at the end of this song), “Man, this is what life in America feels like on easy mode and it is not great.”   In the last weeks, we have watched systems, already buckling under their responsibility to We, The People, take assault, become desecrated. New power, systemically designed to exclude, extinguish, and make invisible. From Bullies, to Bureaucrats, to Billionaires, “the pace of oppression outstrips our ability to understand it” - Core overload, I can’t decode.   I think that there have been times that the correct path forward, is to sit uncomfortable, in a seat, at a table, not quite built for me, and fake it.   But, when the system threatens our tired, our poor, our huddled masses, yearning to breathe free. When that systems stands between us, and the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. No way to fit?   Well. Baby, break it. by @yester_kid
