David Bernstein - He/Him - @yesyesbernstein

David Bernstein (He/him, 1988, San Antonio, Texas) is an artist based in Brussels who combines performance, sculpture, and writing to tell stories through objects. His projects deal with a range of subjects: psychology, hospitality, fetishism, and spirituality. Next to his individual practice, he collaborates with a variety of people and participates in building community at Shabbes 24/7 (Belgian Jewish diasporist queer collective) and at Level Five (Brussels atelier cooperative).

The Fiat Multipla is a contradiction. It’s called the ugliest car in the world, but at the same time it’s a great family car; spacious like a living room. This Multipla transformed from car into sauna; from one social space into another. Inside you hear the music of Sun Ra, the cosmic afro-futurist. The Saunra is meant as a joyful healing space for our troubled times; a place of warmth, hope and humor.

Essential reading by @azoyizes on how the framing of antisemitism as something ancient, permanent and intangible is politically convenient for the far right and Zionists: a strategy to deflect and divide.

“As Jews, we must urgently move away from vertical alliances: relying on the state and its machinery of violence to keep us safe,” writes Fenya. “Instead, we should build horizontal and intentional broad based alliances between Jews, Palestinians, Muslims, migrants, working-class people, and other racialised and oppressed groups, resisting the politics of division and scapegoating. Safety comes from collective liberation, not conditional state protection.”

This Saturday from 4-9pm, we have a one night only exhibition at Second Room, Antwerp.
This is the first presentation of PUTTEKE (William Ludwig Lutgens, Anna Reutinger, Juan Pablo Plazas, David Bernstein).

For “Away Goes Trouble Down The Drain”, we will show a giant drain table where visitors are invited to speak their complaints into. They can release their worries and frustrations into a collective hole. There will be a special cocktail available for the evening called “Ontstopper - Drain Cleaner”. The title for our exhibition comes from the song, Last Night a DJ Saved My Life.

This past Dec, @lara_bongard @mygolem_is_here & I made a performative evening on Judeo-Futurism at @joodsmuseum organized by @mirthe.frese

The evening was a humorous, joyful, and critical look at our Jewish future. Grounded in human rights and an understanding that we are all intertwined in this world together, as Judeo-Futurists we celebrate "Doykeit", the Yiddish concept meaning "Hereness". Doykeit says that as Jews, we are home wherever we are. In contrast to Zionism and ethno-nationalism, Judeo-Futurism is based in solidarity and fights for the collective liberation of all people, especially for Palestinians.

Our evening at the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam was also about taking a break from the broken reality of the present to imagine an alternative future, a cosmic future that draws from the ancestral wisdom of Judaism. We served up Sour Wandering Jew cocktails; offered anointing oils, protective garlic, special spiraling pastries from historical recipes; and the Psychedelic Tzadik led everyone in pickle play and an exercise in moving from Oy to Joy!

We created new rituals and opened up the door to the world to come.

A recent drawing I made for @europeanjewsforpalestine for their campaign “Chanukkah for Palestine”. They are raising funds to donate to Green Olive Collective who will replant olive trees in the Nablus District and Masafer Yatta.

In 2025 arson attacks by Israeli settlers have already destroyed over 2000 trees in Burin alone.

The drawing shows an intertwined olive tree with a menorah as one of the branches. I chose to make the tree interwoven to symbolize how our struggles for human rights, freedom, safety, and dignity are not something that we fight for alone, but we must be in solidarity with all people to achieve this. We are all interconnected in this world; people, animals, and plants. As Jews we must fight for equality and freedom for all people in Palestine, it is our moral duty. By replanting olive trees, we support this effort in a small but meaningful way to help Palestinian farmers to reroot in the land.

The work ‘Something to hold on to’ stayed in China a bit longer without me, hosted by the Dutch Embassy in Beijing. This hardbound book brings together drawings, pictures, and short stories resulting from a commission project with Casino Luxembourg. I created 3 mobile artworks that were presented in special workshops to communities who don't have access to the art center. We visited a refugee center, a community of deaf and blind people, a prison, and a school. Based on the groups' reactions and responses to the artworks, I wrote fictional stories that gave their "truths" for the sculptures.
