RIJO SEES PEOPLE, NOT JUST VOTES

Very rarely do we meet politicians who see constituents as people with dreams, hopes, and aspirations — even rarer are those who serve from genuine conviction, not ambition.

I had heard about Rijo Shekari’s philanthropy long before we met. But sitting with him in Kaduna to discuss our community’s future, I knew I was in the presence of a remarkable leader.

Rijo does more than fill gaps where government support falls short. He is a visionary building pathways for economic empowerment for youth and women. As a private citizen, he funds scholarships for students in competitive, future-proof fields like health, agriculture, and technology. His belief is simple: education must equip people with skills that keep them relevant in a fast-changing world.

At Kamrum Farms, his vision comes alive. He sees agriculture as more than subsistence — it’s a profitable agribusiness that creates jobs and drives development. By combining traditional farming with modern technology, he’s transforming cattle and dairy production while empowering local farmers and ranchers.

Yet even with his achievements, Rijo has never forgotten the vulnerable. Across Southern Kaduna, he has provided clean water, financial aid, support for women in small businesses, and jobs for young people.

Modern societies grow through leaders whose vision reawakens our sense of responsibility. In Rijo Shekari — with his integrity, strategic thinking, empathy, and proven track record — I see the kind of leadership, Zango/Jaba, Southern Kaduna, Kaduna and Nigeria urgently need.

It is an urgent responsibility for the people to not just applaud men such as Rijo Shekari, but to encourage and give them all the necessary support required in their aspirations for leadership and governance.

It is refreshing to meet a man who doesn’t just talk about building a better society but proves it daily through action and sacrifice.

I will be participating in the National Dialogue on Youth Creatives in the Digital Economy, part of the 2026 Senior Executive Course (SEC) at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in collaboration with the development Research and Projects Centre, Nigeria @drpcnigeria

I look forward to this conversation because I believe equal access to education, arts and culture can contribute to the development of society, especially for disadvantaged groups. Development experts have agreed that the creative and cultural industry has become a critical sector that can contribute significantly to the growth and development of economies. If harnessed well, it can help reduce the vast disparities between the rich world and the Global South, even the social and class differences within countries. It can empower people to take ownership of their development and stimulate the innovation that can drive inclusive sustainable growth. It can also be a source of structural socio-economic transformation, job creation and innovation while contributing to social inclusion and sustainable human development.

From over a decade of experience working in the creative and cultural sector, I can attest that there is potential in the creative industry, however, the problem is we still seem to be grappling with the strategies that will facilitate the harnessing of the prospects in this industry, which western nations have long identified. The global popularity of African and Nigerian arts and culture is undeniable. Nigerian music, arts and crafts, literature, and fashion are gaining ground around the world, which contributes immensely to the countries they are being exported to. Nonetheless, with just a 1.2% contribution, the figures from the National Bureau of Statistics show that Nigeria’s creative industry has a low contribution to our GDP, the least compared to some African countries.

Growing a dynamic creative economy depends in part on the quality of creative talent we have, and mostly on the atmosphere put in place for creativity to blossom. I comment the Institute’s effort to provide creatives a platform to engage directly with senior policy policymakers. by @yeugene_

PRESS STATEMENT
NGA Green Academy Fellows Launch Report on Inclusive Waste Governance in Nigeria
22nd January 2026

The NGA Green Academy Fellows, an initiative of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, have unveiled a groundbreaking research report titled "Inclusive Waste Governance in Nigeria: Leveraging Informal Waste Workers for a Circular Economy." This report spotlights the invaluable contributions of informal waste workers to Nigeria’s waste management and recycling systems, while urging policymakers to formally recognise and protect this vital sector.
According to the report, informal waste workers are responsible for an estimated 60–90 per cent of waste collection and the recovery of recyclable materials within Nigeria’s circular economy value chain. Despite their crucial role, these workers continue to face significant challenges, including occupational and health risks, harassment, poverty, and social stigma. The report calls for inclusive governance strategies that integrate informal workers into policy development, planning, and implementation.
The launch event convened a diverse group of stakeholders in Abuja, including informal waste workers, formal waste management and recycling companies, civil society organisations, media, international bodies, and government representatives. The discussion focused on strengthening environmental sustainability and advancing circular economy practices in Nigeria’s capital.
Co-Lead Researcher Eugene Yakubu Shichet described informal waste workers as “unsung heroes” whose efforts keep Nigerian cities clean, sustain the recycling industry, and contribute significantly to national economic growth. He noted that the event sought to amplify the voices and lived experiences of these workers. In tandem, a photo exhibition showcased portraits and stories of informal waste workers, bringing their challenges and positive environmental impact to the forefront.
Ms Sophie von Knebel, Country Director of the Heinrich Böll Foundation, emphasised the importance of people-centred, inclusive approaches to waste governance. She stressed that achieving a cleaner, more sustainable society requires meaningful by @yeugene_

On Thursday, @_starzahra and I were pleased to stop by our friend @yeugene_ ‘s exhibition on plastic waste and recycling at @mambaahcafe; it was part of a research in collaboration with @aniebiet06, with the support of @boellabuja. It was lovely to catch up with Eugene on the sidelines and away from Kaduna, our usual context. Well done, all. Let’s keep having these important conversations.

🔎 Recognising informal waste workers' contribution in Nigeria's circular economy

We are delighted to share that our Nigeria Green Academy Fellows, Aniebiet Obot and Yakubu Eugene Shichet, convened a powerful Docu-Photo Exhibition as well as launched their research study on "Inclusive Waste Governance in Nigeria.”

The photo exhibition put a face and a story to the informal waste workers, the Mai Bola(Hausa), who recover 60-90% of recyclables in our cities. Their labour is fundamental, yet their presence in policy planning and investment remains marginalised.

This project is a call to action: to see their indispensable contribution, to strengthen their operations, and to integrate them into a just and effective waste management system.

👉 Swipe through to see their world through our lens.
