Welcome to ‘I Paint my World - Hong Kong’ !

Painted over 4 long but therapeutic days, the painting depicts a condensed and imaginary impression of Kowloon looking towards Hong Kong island. Nathan Road (Jordan area) and Temple Street are in the foreground. Tsim Sha Tsui, Victoria Harbour and the gleaming Hong Kong island skyline are in the horizon.

Many of us grew up following Hong Kong TV, movie and music. It is also a popular destination for holiday and business. My first trip there was in 1993, en route to mainland China. Over the decades, I visited Hong Kong frequently for business trips - implementing finance systems, attending courses, and from 2016, painting. I made use of all these trips to do sightseeing, eating and hiking.

This post summarises my art expressions of this beautiful journey with Hong Kong. Join me on a stroll through ‘my’ Hong Kong, and enjoy her energetic vibe!

Welcome to Varanasi, India!

Last year end, I finally made a trip to this fabled place I had dreamt of visiting since young. The bonus was, it was a family trip with my loved ones.

We walked the ghats (stepped river bank of the Ganges), explored the labyrinth of alleyways and bustling markets, watched the Aarti ceremonies, and took boat rides on the Ganges River at both sunrise and sunset. We all fell in love with magical Varanasi!

This painting captured my memories of the trip. It is a unique aerial view painting, condensed and imaginary, with focus on recreating the vibe. I hope you enjoy exploring Varanasi here!

Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam !

This is probably my “busiest” painting ever, busy with so many details that one can feel lost. That’s precisely how I had felt during all my trips there. I particularly wanted to capture my memories of the chaotic and smoggy vibes of the old quarters - the bustling street life, deafening motorbikes, long narrow houses and entangled overhead wires.

Admist the chaos is the 19th century Ngoc Son Temple, sitting calmly on an island surrounded by the serenity of Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

Other memorable landmarks that are visible in the painting:
- Shark Jaw building at Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square (just demolished in 2025)
- Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre (spot the water puppet show!)
- Hồ Chí Minh Mausoleum
- Chợ Đồng Xuân Market
- Ga Hà Nội (Hanoi Train Station)
- Hanoi Flag Tower
- The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long

For this South East Asia segment, I’m now left with Thailand, Brunei, Philippines and Singapore. But I’ll be interrupted with a painting trip. See you in Africa in two weeks time!

‘I paint my World’ is a series of canvas paintings depicting places around the world I’ve experienced. They capture my memories and stories of world’s evolving culture and landscape.

The series will cover all continents, starting from Asia. I started painting in March 2025 and have painted 22 x 2.5m panels so far. I target to complete the series in 2030.

I hope to exhibit whatever I’ve completed in a 2027 or 2028 exhibition. I’m looking for a big space for the showcase. Meanwhile, follow my journey online. Thank you! by @yipyewchong

Welcome to Ubud, Bali — the 22nd painting in my ‘I Paint My World’ series.

I’ve painted a panoramic impression of Ubud, with the Batur Caldera and Mt Agung in the distance. But zoom in closer and you’ll discover all kinds of little details - a colourful temple festival procession, handicraft shops selling paintings, and even a scooter rider carrying chickens!

Many artists have painted Bali, but I think this painting is one of its kind!

Bali has long been a favourite subject for artists because of its unique culture. Nestled in the Indonesian archipelago, Balinese culture and Balinese Hindu culture are truly unlike anywhere else in the world.

My first trip to Bali was in 1996, when my wife, a few friends and I backpacked across Java and Bali. In 2002, we returned with our elders and young children. My last visit was in 2023, with my wife.

Bali has changed quite a lot over these 30 years.

Thirty years ago, the drive from Kuta Beach to Ubud took us through forests and paddy fields. By 2023, the same three-hour journey was lined with houses on both sides of the road almost all the way.

When I climbed Mt Batur in 2002, I practically had the whole trail to myself. In 2023, I could see torches lighting up the entire trail, from the base all the way to the summit.

I can’t help feeling that Bali has become over-touristed and over-developed.

And yet, when I look beyond the tourism, I still find the same Bali, deeply steeped in its unique culture.

Balinese, young and old, dress in traditional costumes, perform traditional dances, make offerings at the penjor altars, and take part in Odalan festival processions. They don’t do these things just for tourists. They are very much part of their daily lives.

This is the Bali I hope will never disappear.

Next stop: Uzbekistan

Selamat Datang ke “I Paint my World - George Town, Penang” !

This is the 12th painting in the series, completed exactly 1 year after I started this journey.

Penang holds a special place in my heart. The thriving mural scene there - especially the works of @ernestzacharevic - was what inspired me to get into mural painting. I’m really grateful for the inspiration, and for the aspiration that continues to grow my art.

This piece took over a week to finish, mainly because of all the research and details involved. I spent quite a bit of time figuring out how to condense and fit in as many iconic landmarks as possible, while still giving each one enough space to be identifiable and stand out.

Take a slow stroll through the historic streets, walk along the jetties, hop on a trishaw, and enjoy the street food. Can you spot my mural, “Folklore by the Sea,” from 2018?

Continuing the journey, my next stops are Bangkok, then Manila. See you along the way!

Tokyo 東京e yokoso!

This is the 16th painting of the series “I Paint my World”. I’ve painted a night scene of Shinjuku (新宿), one of my favourite places in Tokyo, because of its electrifying giant billboards. It’s an impressionable sight in Japan. I really enjoyed painting the scene. The process of luminating the city signboard by signboard was very satisfying!

Many people are curious about my creative process. The process starts with deciding on which area to feature, which is based primarily on my personal experience and impression of what best represents the place’s vibe. Next, I’ll study my old photos, online photos, aerial maps (google map, google earth) and then compose the imaginary scene. All the details, such as signboard names, lights, colours, cars and people are added impromptu as I paint along.

Lastly, I’ll weave my more pivotal personal experiences into a story to complement the painting, to make it genuine and relatable. Thus, you’ll see my favourite Uniqlo and Sushiro!

Please enjoy bright lights big Tokyo, and some of my personal stories. Spot the famous cat billboard near the Shinjuku East Station.

Next place, I’ll bring you to Mongolia!

Welcome to Seoul!
It’s the 20th painting of ‘I Paint my World’ series.

My first trip to Seoul was in 2004. I was there to strengthen the financial control of my company’s Korea operations. My itinerary included visits to the bank, the tax office, the accounting & law firm, and even the hospital to visit a colleague who had been injured in an accident. I remember that almost everything was in Korean - from subway signboards to restaurant menus - getting around was a challenge. It was also around that time that Korean dramas such as ‘Dae Jang Geum’ and ‘Winter Sonata’ were beginning to captivate audiences around the world.

In 2012 winter, I returned to Seoul with my family and travelled to other parts of Korea. It was a memorable family holiday in the biting cold. By then, Seoul was no longer a largely monolingual city. Korea’s soft power - from the global popularity of the Korean Wave (remember PSY’s Gangnam Style?), to its renowned beauty industry and smartphone brands - had transformed South Korea into a trendy international destination.

In the painting, you’ll spot Gyeongbukgong, a historic palace in the heart of Seoul. As in many East Asian city layout, there is a large square in front of the palace. This painting shows the Gwanghwamun Square before it was remodeled in 2022 to reconstruct the Wolde stone platform in front of the gate. The place looks different if you visit it today, so this artwork tells the city’s evolution. Nearby is Insadong-gil, a quaint shopping street with art galleries, craft shops, tea houses and street snacks. The dragon beard candy and Korean rice cake shops are always bustling with visitors, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Earlier this year, I participated in the Korea–Singapore Arts Festival at The Arts House. It brought back fond memories of Korea and reminded me how profoundly a country’s soft power can shape its global image and influence. I hope one day, Singapore’s culture can be as popular too!

I have taken 1.5years to get from the first painting to this one. The road ahead is still long, but I am motivated to continue, especially after almost giving up on the series last year.

Next stop: Taipei!

Welcome to Taipei, the 21st painting of ‘I Paint My World’ series.

My memories of Taipei span over 4 decades.

Dating back to 1988 when I was a teenager, my impressions of Taipei were: noisy scooters, neon signs, night markets, video games & jackpot shops, scantily dressed ladies selling betel nuts, and roadside stalls selling porn magazines! To a teenager from sterile Singapore, these were all so exciting!

Taipei was the city of my first overseas business trip. In 1995, I travelled there alone as a young accountant. My task was to strengthen the financial controls of my company’s Taiwan operations. I was so excited that I wore a tie on the flight! That trip was followed by countless more, and with each visit, I watched the city change.

Taipei became cleaner, more orderly and modern. In March 1996, the Taipei MRT opened. I joined the crowd in joy-riding. The seats in the cabins were strangely arranged like those on buses. In Sept 1996, a typhoon and an earthquake struck on the same day! When we returned to the office, we found the glass door had been blown down and shattered. It was scary!

In 2004, the then tallest building in the world, Taipei 101, opened in Taipei, despite the city being earthquake-prone. At 508m, it looks like a sprouting bamboo shoot. But when I visited it in 2010, it had already lost its title to Dubai’s 828m Burj Khalifa.

In March 2020, Taipei was the last city I flew out of just-in-time before the whole world locked down for three pandemic years.

These days, every year or two, I make a trip to Taiwan, and Taipei is almost impossible to miss. After every visit, I love the city more and more.

I love Taipei’s genuine graciousness. Once, we were looking for a particular brand of cold medicine. A pharmacy didn’t carry it, but instead of simply sending us away, the staff went out of their way to lead us to another nearby medical store.

Perhaps that is Taipei to me: a city that has changed tremendously over the decades, yet somehow retained its warmth and humanity.

From the Taipei of my teenage years to the Taipei I know today, this painting is a piece of my own journey through time.
