$Second Base, First Full Wig My daughter decided she wanted to be Pearl from Steven Universe a week before Halloween. I couldn't find a wig that fit her tiny 4 year old head at the last minute so I made her one. I used a Back Lace Net, Size 10 Ventilating Needle, and Invisible Nylon Thread from @thewigdepartment and Princess Pink wefts from @ardawigs I swore I ordered 3 packs of wefts but it must've slipped my mind as I also had to make her costume (which I delegated to my mother), make Pearls spear, find and dye shorts pink, dye\paint shoe covers, and find a half pearl to stick to her forehead bc she can't be a crystal gem without her gem. In 1 week. I put a few wefts in the back upside down to make it easier to get the lift in the back. It took forever to tease and I would've preferred to have 3 packs to cover the sides better but she was happy either way. The front pointy parts didn't make it to the end of the night but it was just for the night. I also learned the invaluable lesson that I cannot pull any lace or net as tight as I had been pulling stiff net. Lesson learned. I ended up have to pin it in the front and back bc it turned out slightly shorter bc of my tugging during construction. I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I still get a little salty sometimes when I think about it but then I remember it was for my baby and she was more than happy so that's all that matters. That and learning from my mistakes. #wigs #custommade #madetomeasure #cosplay #stevenuniverse #pearl by @yoashmo$

This is the finished wig base. I'm pleased with how it turned out, being my first one. I made lots of mistakes but learned a lot from those mistakes.

The last 3 pics show one of those mistakes. I accidently whipstitched the perimeter under instead of over. I was going to take a seam ripper and tweezers to it but decided I could learn more by covering it galoon. I used translucent ribbon from @thewigdepartment to follow the edge and then stitched it down using a ventilating needle.
I also added some wig springs to the left and right bottom corners as the corners had already started to curl up bc it's been sitting on the canvas block since October.

I want to thank everyone I pestered with question after question after question for being so patient and helping me understand things the books weren't specific enough about.

More pics of my first wig base construction. I thought the laying of the lace needed it's own post bc it is much harder than I thought it would be.
I used fronting lace from @amazinghairstore
It's not exactly hard but it does have to be precise. I'm sure it gets easier with more practice but keeping it straight and keeping it snug while trying to not stretch it too far will take work on my heavy handed part.

This is the construction of the previous posts pattern from October. Also my very first attempt at constructing a wig base.

I used stiff net, invisible nylon thread, and a size 10 German ventilating needle from @thewigdepartment. I did have to go over the seams of the 6 darts with a curved sewing needle as it was very hard to get through 5-6 layers of stiff net with a ventilating needle.

It's a bit bulky at the dart seams on one side but I think I figured a way to eliminate some of that on the other wig caps I've done since this.
As usual I'll be more than pleased to receive any tips or tricks or constructive criticism to help me improve.

These are pics of plotting my first pattern in October. I knew what I wanted in the end but wasn't sure if it was smart to be editing a cap design on my first go. I decided the more mistakes I made the more I could learn from them.
I'm posting it so all you pros out there can offer me any critiques or suggestions on how I did this or anything else. I'm always open to improving.

Density Practice with Before (Left) and After (Right) of cutting returns.
•
I always liked the look of fullness when leaving the returns but now that I've done it myself I now see how it effects the hair movement. I thought it looked natural before I cut them, but once they were cut 😍😍😍 it looked even better. That's just my opinion.
•
All sections were cross-knotted using a size 1 German ventilating hook from @thewigdepartment on @amazinghairstore fronting lace.
Pic 1: 1-2 Hairs Every hole
Pic 2: 1-2 Hairs Every other hole/ Every 2nd Hole
Pic 3: 1-2 Hairs Every 3rd Hole

Doing this really helped me feel more comfortable with different densities. I do realize that you can alter density by also using different size ventilating Needles while still using the same pattern and that the most natural looking wigs are usually done with more random knotting. But I think it's important to get your basics down and this has helped me be able to visualize the outcome of the different choices I may make when I start ventilating full wigs.

Any tips are critiques are more than welcome.

All the books say to start with something small, like some sort of facial piece. I guess a merkin would be okay too. lol
•
So my first ventilated piece was a mustache. Mainly bc mustaches are cool and I'd have to make some pretty large eyebrows to cover my own.
•
○The 1st pic shows the mustache when I first thought I was done. The perfectionist in me decided the perimeter was to harsh and full to look natural. I picked a very full mustache to begin with but this just didn't look right. So i got out my tiny tweezers and started picking knots out. ○The 2nd pic shows the actual finished (ventilating) product. I tried it on my resident guinea pig (my niece) to make sure it was large enough to cover her mustache area and compared it to a photo I was using for inspiration. I wasn't super pleased but accepted I had done my best as a novice and would learn more by doing more instead of obsessing over this one project. ○The 3rd and 4th pics shows how I straw set the hair to add texture. I then steamed every bit of that mustache.
○The 5th pic shows what the hair looked like when I removed the straws. I was pleased with the texture. Though I do wish I would not have put so much tension on the hairs at the very top. Bc while it did add the lift I wanted it also pulled a few hairs in a wonky direction. I'm not to upset about it bc my bf's mustache hairs curve a bit inwards in the same spot. Plus I learned what not to do.
○The 6th pic shows the mustache after it was snipped and made to behave with a little bit of combing and mustache wax.
•
I ended up cutting it a little more and using mustache wax and pins to set the ends to curl outwards. Unfortunately I lost the mustache before I got a chance to try it on my niece properly. I believe my 4 year old got her grubby hands on it bc it just vanished. 😁😁 I would love to see what it looks like on, maybe one day it will turn up.

This is my niece's favorite BSS wig. She honestly has at least 6 of them. It is 22"-24" long. It being almost 1 year old, being hella long, and her wearing it made for quite the challenge. I almost took scissors to it more than once.
I detangled and washed it and planned to style it. I steamed it with a round brush and planned to add a mermaid like wave texture, which is shown. I didn't like it bc it didn't lay right and looked frizzy and dry. So I steamed it again this time bone straight with a paddle brush.
This wig originally has big and loose beach curls so it was nice to see it so straight. My niece decided since it is her favorite wig, it would be nice to have a straight version. She recently wore it for her birthday and I think it held up pretty well.
To thank me she gave me two more of her stock of this particular wig to practice different refronting techniques. So expect to see a lace front version soon.

BSS wig that belongs to my niece needed a detangle, wash, and restyle.
For most it would probably be cheaper to just buy a new wig, because it is a lot of work, unless it's your favorite discontinued wig.
But I like to do it for the practice with synthetic hair.
I brushed it out with a metal wig brush while using a steamer to straighten it out.
I washed it using baking soda and a clarifying shampoo.
I reset it using mesh spring rollers, then steamed it and let it cool.
Any and all tips and critiques welcome.

Today I de-wefted (?) and seperated some old 18" Outre wefted hair by length so that it is easier to ventilate with less waste. It took me almost 6 hours to seperate about 3/4 of the pack.
As you see when you buy 18" wefted hair you're mostly getting 12"-14" and 7" and under. There is no pile for less than 7" bc that shit was a mess of 6", 5", and 4". I saved it for hair rats.
It was fun and I learned a lot but very tiring.

First Whip-Stitched Dart

I know it's silly. But I thought this would give me trouble. I stretched my lace a bit too much at the tip.
The pink thread kept fraying when pulled through multiple holes so I stitched the left side down with invisible thread. Much Easier.

Critiques Welcome.
Maybe someone can tell me how I don't over stretch my lace.

First Practice Session

Pic 1 - First Row of Single Knots
Pic 2 - Second Row of Single Knots
Pic 3 - First Row of Double Knots
Pic 4 - Third Row of Double Knots
Pic 5 - Single Knot Crossing Knotting

I think they still come out too loose sometimes, so I think I need to work on my tention when knotting. I literally practiced until bed. Now I'm off to do it all over again.

Any Critiques Welcomed.
